Stuart Zender on Return of the Space Cowboy. So fat and growly and punchy! Beautiful tone. Also a mention for Flea around the Californication to Stadium Arcadium era. Hi-fi defined.

Never heard Trace referred to as 'wooly' My GP12 is glassy and clear!

I have a micro Q-Tron, which is a superb sounding envelope filter but as others have said, the volume spike makes it pretty much unusable in a live setting. It also developed some kind of fault where it will drain a battery from new within a few hours, even when the cable is disconnected and not in use.

Thank you Chiliwailer! whoever you sell it to is going to be one lucky person! These are absolute magic.

Hi all Finally dragged myself away from it to post a little overview of my experiences with it so far! After years of searching (and financial situation allowing) I finally got my hands on a Flea. Always adored the tone Flea gets with this instrument (live and recorded) and was always my personal holy grail of tone so to speak. The graphite neck providing that insane articulation and note attack. I was curious to find out what it's actually like in the flesh. A 160 Mile trip to North London from sunny Oxfordshire later, and it was mine. It's 2005 with the Seymour Duncan and Aguilar OBP-1 First impressions - In black it's actually a classy looking bass. Much prefer it in the sombre colours to the sparkle finishes (as cool as they are in their own way) - Fit and finish are impeccable. - The carbon fibre finish (thousand ladies dancing?) on the neck is mesmerizing! Playability - Super smooth neck with a beautifully playable profile, easy to play fast on. - Nicely balanced weight-wise. Good centre of gravity on the strap. - Heavier than i thought it would be. Heavier than my Jazz Bass - Nice little detent on the Seymour duncan pickup for thumb placement! Sound - Absolutely unreal note separation. Instant attack and punch. - The best string to string balance i've so far experienced in 10 years of playing. - Growl in spades. - Uncanny ability thats probably impressed me most, of sitting absolutely perfectly in the mix. Second only to a p-bass. This bass just seems to find that sonic space for itself and just always sounds 'right' - Of course slaps and pops like a hammer. Negative points After nearly a week with it i can't say there are many, The poly finish on the neck is a little sticky at times and also it can be a bit harsh sounding unless you keep on top of your eq. In summary, it's great! Now back to playing!!

I love everything other than Jazz and modern day 'urban' pop music (think will.i.am). I absolutely detest these genres!

Never ever tried anything Hartke up until last month, practice room I use has a ha2500 (is that right) and it seriously impressed me. Outrageously punchy and musical sounding amp. Even through an Ashdown 4x10! Not replacing my GP12 smx anytime soon but, for the money, I can't see how it gets better than the Hartke.

The Fender range is faaaaaar too bloated and definitely needs to be simplified. It's quite frankly a mess. I don't agree with an earlier poster about the Mexican range. The Roadworns are widely regarded to be pretty much the best bang for buck Fenders you can get outside of the CS. And also as an another poster pointed out the post 2008-ish Mexico Standards are actually dramatically improved instruments. I can attest to this as my 2010 MIM jazz is hands down the one of the best Fenders I have played. Lightweight, impeccable finishing and construction and a classy sound. My best mates 2009 MIM stratocaster is also impressively constructed and finished. I have to agree in saying it's actually the variance in quality of the higher priced Fenders that's damaging the brand! You can accept a few dogs at a lower price point, but at a higher one? no. You can see why people are going for Laklands et al. Fender will find a way, I hope. Love them or hate them, they are a massive part of our history and I want to see them thrive.

"And if i see any of you lot from basschat on here, I'll be right round your house" Brilliant!

Evening gents! I have a late 90's Trace Elliot gp12 smx (AH600) combo with a single 15 inch driver. Due to the cabs sound (and weight!) limitations I really am now looking at rehousing the head. The amp sounds beautiful but I really want to pair the head with a lightweight neo 4x10 as I think it would really come to life even more. Does anyone know anyone who could build a sleeve to house it in, to a decent standard? or are there any other options rather than trawling the bay for a battered old trace head to scavenge? Many thanks in advance Si.

The Blue Album has got to be one of my top ten albums of all time, everything that came after I found to be very bland. Geek rock by numbers.

Cheers guys, I'll give the dunlop polish a try!

Hi Guys. Trying to clean my 2010 MIM neck (it's getting really grimy now) Never been able to find a definitive answer on this, searched high and low across the t'interweb! Closest I found to an answer was using lighter fluid? maybe i'm being too precious, but to me using something like that on my Jazz Bass neck seems a little risky? Cheers

Why didn't they just buy a p/j to begin with?

Paul Denman for me. Classy tone from a classy player.

Trace Elliot has always been my holy grail of tone. Love my GP12SMX 1x15 combo. Kicks an immense amount of arse! punch and growl in spades and 580w to play with. Sure they are heavy, but thats not a deal breaker to me. I always find it curious that it is said they have been left behind or bettered tonally, a product of the 80's if you will, I'm only 28 and Trace has always been THE tone. Over and above the Ashdowns, Markbass, Ampegs I've played through. Edit - have to add I never use the graphic preset, it sounds awful. Just manual control of the graphic eq.
-
Amen! I love his playing and the tone he gets from his ATK. Me and my old lady is probably my fave line.

My MIM Jazz (maple board) never goes out of tune, constantly surprises me at the start of every band practice that no adjustment is needed! -
Comprehensive rundown there Warwickhunt! Thanks very much!
