We do a lot of gigs on the covers circuit and we try avoid doing any for less than £300. A rather well known mock-Irish chain of pubs that you may well know pay out £300-350 depending on the night of the week and how well they know you. Some of the small one-off pubs have tiny budgets and can only stretch to £250. That big Aussie pub chain pay out around £500 upwards. For that they get 1x45min and 1x60min set usually. Pubs that charging on the door need to be giving you at least £500 for a normal set like that. For weddings we always charge between £1k and £1.5K depending on distance travelled and set-up times as well as the set length. If you've got to travel 100 miles and be there to soundcheck before the ceremony even starts then it's your whole day down the pan! Any corporate event, start at least £2k and see if they accept it or bat you down. I've been on both ends of this one from booking bands for my company and being the band being asked to play, big companies have a ton of cash to waste, my company paid a major label 3-piece who are big fans of Buck Rogers about £7.5k for a 30 min set last year. Hope that helps!

what tune/band that got you into bass ?
Clarky72 replied to phil.i.stein's topic in General Discussion
o.k. here we go.. as we all know, our tastes in music are highly subjective, and sometimes devisive (particularly judging by some recent threads). people like different stuff at different stages of life, and my personal tastes constantly change/develop/revert etc.. i've liked pop, mod, metal, goth, punk, funk, electro, hip-hop, reggae, d'n'b, industrial, classical etc., etc., in my time, and still like to think i have reasonably eclectic tastes. the psychology of music is a fascinating & exhaustive subject, and has a lot to do with our formative years in appreciating it. but, can you remember the tune or the band that got you into the bass guitar (specifically) ? be honest ! embarrassingly for me it would have been john taylor from duran duran. i was a child of the eighties, so that's my excuse.(i still rate his playing highly, it's just me cringing at the thought of being a 14-year old new romantic that makes me shiver !) so come on, who or what got you started ?
Phil, exactly the same for me, JT! A highly under-rated player... I've got some pretty bad photos of myself all new-romantic with floppy blonde fringe and big flowing shirts too! haha The tune that did it for me was New Religion, from the Rio album. wicked line.
What an awful monstrosity of a pedal!
Blimey!!! I have the Korg DT-10. Its the most robust spot-on tuner I've owned. Even stands up to drunk rhythm guitarists stumbling onto it mid-gig... The LEDs are really clear on any stage and its completely silent, no nasty clicks. I can't enough good things about it, I had one Korg's rack tuners before that and again, so so good. Steve

I had a Tokai Thunderbird for a year or so. To me, it played so much nicer than the Epiphone, its the closest I've felt in sound and feel to a Gibson, highly recommended!!

Ahh! Welcome to the Shire!

The Bernard Edwards Appreciation Thread
Clarky72 replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
Do you - or any other Forumite - have a link (Youtube?) which shows his unusual playing style? I read in 'Bass Player' magazine that he held his forefinger and thumb together and struck the strings almost as if he had a plectrum between them. Cheers Clarky PS, fantastic player and his basslines were part of the soundtrack of my youth
Hey Clarky, Check this clip. There's a part where you see Bernard's technique of thumb & forefinger clearly... The Man Cheers Clarky -
What got me started was listening to Duran Duran. I listened to John Taylor's basslines when I was about 11 and thought he was the coolest guy in the band (pushed by my girlfriend at the time who though he he was hot). Listening to him I got into a lot more funk, particularly Chic, Bernard Edwards, is still in my opinion untouchable.... For pure showmanship and bloody-mindedness it has to be Gene Simmons (and Nikki Sixx, although Nikki clearly is no musical inspiration). So yeah: Bernard Edwards John Taylor Gene Simmons
Steve - Go west to Bath and I played in SkinTrade. Bratpack I know well because Andy Town & I shared a flat together after SkinTrade / Dogsbody ended and we did a band together called The Ex-Boyfriends. I think we played with Endorfiends the night after Diana died in London but I was ill so don't recall it to much. Needless to say I know all those bands you mention and I suspect I know a lot of the same people. Left it all behind a long time ago and the the last 10yrs has been more of an Americana thing for me but I look back fondly. Tim
Oh god, yeah I remember Skin Trade & the Ex-Boyfriends!! Small world eh!.. I still speak to Andy, I've been meaning to pop along to one of his Daves or 'Amptons gigs for a while, we just keep gigging the same nights! We must know so many of the same people... I was just looking through your gear, you've got some lovely stuff there. Steve
Hey Steve - Welcome to Basschat. What was the band you did in the early 90s? I was part of that underground Glam / Sleaze scene too
Cheers! The bands back then were Crystal, Silver Bullets and the one that got signed was Bratpack, we did the regular London gig scene, Marquee, Royal Standard etc... we played with Rich Rags, Pleasure Victims, Gunfire Dance, Spit Like This, Scarlet Tears, and loads of others who's names escape me now! After that I did Endorfiends with the guys from Kill City Dragons & Lord of The New Church. How about you? Steve

Hello everybody, my name is Steve and I'm an alcoholic, there, I've said it.... oh crap, wrong forum... So, I've been playing since I was 16. My lovely folks bought me a blue glitter tree trunk for my 16th birthday, disguised as a Marlin Sidewinder. Looking back it was a bitch to play, but it got me on the road to learning so a massive thanks to the olds! I play for a number of reasons... 1) when we were kids my mate got a 6 string before me so for our first band i had to play bass... 2) i always thought the bass players were the cooler guys in the bands 3) bass gave me good strong fingers and great rhythm, which the missus loves! I play bass because of these legends: Bernard Edwards, Gene Simmons, John Taylor (yes, that chap from Duran Duran). Through the late 80s and early 90s I played in a few glam bands, Motley Crue/Kiss/LA Guns style. We did get signed up to Sony but lost the deal when we lost our singer who had a Mr.T style fear of flying and refused to go and do the Japanese Tour, laughable now and very Spinal Tap-esque! Did the obligatory haircut and plaid shirt for the grunge era soon after that. Went on to do more rock bands until in the late 90s when we all realised we really never were going to be famous, and if we did we'd end up being another Nickelback (old men who think they're still 21 when they break and are hated the world over) which was enough to split the band up right there and then! Since then I've played in a covers band or two and for the last 7 years am happily thumping out some tunes in Hustler. clicky thingy here I've had a lot of crap, and some really good gear too... Basses: Marlin Sidewinder Hohner Jack Bass Steinberger L2 (pointless and stupid in my opinion, no offence to anyone who owns and loves theirs) Aria Pro II SB Elite which I wish I'd never sold, i miss you you sexy red beast! Thanks for all the messages. I've decided i will definitely sell this one or do a trade if you are interested. I'm looking for a trade with: Fender Jazz MusicMan Stingray G&L Jazz Lakland Joe Osborn Kubicki Ex-Factor Cheers Steve Here's some much better pictures, plus these show the case. The case does clearly have some wear, and you can see the light scuff on the back of the bass body, plus the tiny chip of the top of the back of the headstock.
