Hi All, So with great excitement and after a lot of looking I bought this last month but I can't get on with it - it's just too "not a P Bass" for me Anyway, so it's a Yamaha RBX 765a active five string in really mint condition - there's a few fine scratches to the front but they won't show on the photos and a very tiny dink by the battery compartment. I've given it a setup since I've had it and it plays really nicely, low action, intonation is spot on, no crackles or buzzes has Schaller strap locks as well. The sound is great really deep clear piano sounding B string, lots of attack and slap if you need it - great bass aned brilliant quality just not a muddy precision like what I want Comes with a bit of thin cover or I might be able to sort you out an old gig bag if you need it. I'd prefer it if it was collected but I expect we can sort out postage somehow if that's the only option pics:

used to spend ages at Bell's Music (and Bootleg in epsom and ABC in Kingston) all gone now - Bell's used to have a fantastic mural on the side of it as well - wish I'd taken a photo at the time. Sadly it went downhill very quickly in the nineties selling cheap stock very badly set up

Go for it - I swap between DB and EB all through the set, we just make sure there's either a gap of talking or a song with a drum or guitar intro long enough for the few seconds needed; I have them both through a boss line switcher so it's a case of swap bass hit foot switch and off I go
Bob is a very helpful man to know! Plus the main reason I switched to guitar to begin with: I realised quickly that I could not really compete with the talent... Come back to "bass-ics" now though and enjoying it. The EUB fulfils lots of criteria, but, as a lot of the advice i had (and ignored) before i bought it, it has not taken long for me to yearn for a proper acoustic bass so i could have made the jump to begin with and save myself the money!
Oh shush happy to help you're always welcome to borrow Baby between gigs as well if you want to try out some premium 1950's plywood
I know this is a cliché answer but it may be a case of having to EQ your amp to a tone that sounds a little unpleasant on its on in order to sit in the mix.
yeah tried that and also tried a Boss EQ in line and still wasn't happy!
It might sound better than you think if you're in a small room.
True - was a village hall so pub-ish sized space - little echoey but nothing the Lakland doesn't laugh at and brush aside.
Phew! I thought this might be the first-ever thread criticising Yamaha build quality. Swap it for a BB425?
Blimey no! the build quality is gorgeous and the body and finger board wood are really nice... BB425 eh...not a bad idea...or maybe just get another precision
Stick some flats on it? That'll kill the twangy, modern sounding aspect of it!
yeah I did think that but then I might be sending good money after bad (not that it's a bad guitar but you know what I mean..) I'll have a think about it over the weekend (which probably means it will be appearing the for sale section I suppose )

Nice one! well done mate! Big tick in the box

So for ages have thought it would be nice to have a Yamaha 5 string and have liked the look of the RBX765's since they were new - spent ages looking and finally found an almost unused one in transparent red ash, gold hardware - looks the mutts. Bought it, set it up, plays like a dream, sounds awesome at home; deep piano clarity, beautiful! Took it to band practice last night, could i get it to sound good in the mix? Could I hell! Every tone under the sun except one that I liked - far too twangy, punchy, modern sounding I suppose. I spent half the evening mucking about twiddling the guitar and fiddling with the amp. Finally gave up (resisting the urge to throw the bloody thing across the room) swapped back to my Lakland and boom, bang on sound straight away. I guess I'm just a muddy P bass player - fed up now don't know whether to sell it on or persevere; having been in this situation in the past I just know if a guitar doesn't feel right from the off it's not going to get better is it? Anyway that's my Friday whining moan over with

Ping this chap a mail http://www.gollihurmusic.com/faq/37-STRINGS_STANDARD_SIZED_STRINGS_ON_LARGE_SIZE_BASSES.html Most 3/4 strings will fit a 4/4 but I know yours is an EUB - is it a Bassix? If so you could ask them as well - he's a nice chap http://www.bassix.net/ I use Innovation Honeys but I need mag strings; silver slaps have a great reputation tho - I've a set of Thomastic Weichs if you want to try them tho...

I think the main thing with faster pop tunes on DB is the extra speed and drive you can get with EB is something you need to alter - on EB especially plectrum playing you can get buckets of drive very easily - lots of same note rhythm; with DB the harder playing dynamics mean you have to alter the bass line to longer sustained notes and perhaps adopt a more walking line approach - sometimes that turns into something special and sometimes not - either way, for better or worse, it changes the dynamic of the song. For slow pop songs there's no real difference in approach so I think the DB trumps the EB every time, the only time I don't use it in those cases is if I don;t have time to switch between the two. With your forearm take it slowly and make sure you warm up first, start with slower songs too and build up your strength

Yes I play all sorts of songs on my DB you just have to change the dynamic of the bassline to suit - but then you know what I play already

Bit of wood or plastic held on with no nails tape would be dead solid and removable...
...or more Rock than Country?
yeah..are you sure Hank done it this way? Country's the biggest vaguest genre of popular music in the world that's always evolving, creating and absorbing different styles so I guess people will always argue what is or isn't country just like the flak poor old "definitely country" Waylon got when he started - anyhow I think if it's managed to get in the country charts then it probably qualifies personally
-
I used to use my old Abm ashdown head for years with my DB - sounded great, with a magnetic pickup tho. I used a bass max with a plat pro and that was ok except for feedback - even used a boss bass eq pedal that did just fine as well..

well at last someone else comes over to the dark side here we go - few more worth adding - Travis Tritt Garth Brooks Willie Nelson Jaron and the Long Road to Love Blue Ridge Rangers with John Fogherty Keith Urban Mary Chapin Carpenter Dixie Chicks Gretchen Wilson Reba McIntire Chris LeDoux Jerry Reed John Denver Tim McGraw Waylon Jennings Tim McGraw Blackfoot, Creedence, Early Eagles and Lynryrd if you want some country rock
& don't write Dolly off too soon (like I did), give the album Jolene another go, sublime!
+1 the thought might make you cringe but have a listen to some Dolly - how the hell she plays Jolene with 3" nails I'll never know but she's not the queen of country through lack of talent
-
Tortex 0.6mms here - and they never break - they wear down after a while but don't ping off in the audiences eyes
-
I'd say - wrap it in a towel, store it flat, keep the truss rod as it is but most importantly keep it at constant temperature and humidity

The Rock Garden at Covent Garden! what a hole that was - lugging your kit for miles over a load of cobbles as there was no where to park, playing to a load of tourists who wandered in bemused because Dire Straits played there once ten years before and having to buy tickets off them to "sell" to people for our fee - I wonder why we only played there once!
