1. All right I'll let you off The Last Command but only because it's got Blind in Texas on it and the only solo you could ever be bothered to learn properly - I'll revert to Saxon bashing (even though I think they're generally great) and pick out Rock the Nations, an album so bland and generically crap I can't even recommend a track off it that reaches mediocrity. What on earth possessed them to do a duet with Elton John (well famed for his Heavy Metal credentials tho he is!) is beyond me. Fun Fun Fun by Quo was late nineties so doesn't qualify - Quo were too stoned in the mid eighties to find the toilet let alone their guitars and spent the whole time fighting with each other. Might have been better of they'd stayed there for the nineties and noughties as well.... Anyway Theatre of Pain isn't Crue's best but I still like it.
2.
I think Theatre Of Pain is one of the worst albums ever made by a mainstream artist.
You've obviously never heard Come out and play by Twisted Sister or The Last Command by WASP
3. Saxon were and still are a great band IMO - good sing along songs and tongue firmly in cheek. Somewhere there is a Kerrang with a picture of Biff wearing a Parrot hat I threw at him at Hammersmith one gig. I sold one of my P basses to Steve Dawson once as well - top chap, really lovely bloke
4. Brownsville Station did the original I believe. At least the years of drugs, booze and rock and roll haven't taken their toll on Mick Mars though..... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5f/Mick_Mars_2012.jpg Very well errm "preserved" I saw Biff Byford in Carnaby street a couple of years ago (was too star struck to say hello ) he was wearing full black eighties gear - skin tight black jeans, cowboy boots over the top, black and pearl cowboy shirt and biker jacket. And a huge belly. No. Just no
5.
and that is one of their worst IMHO
surely beaten into second place by the virtuoso piano on home sweet home? Plink plonk plink plonk plinky-plinky plink plonk LOL
6. Shout at the Devil is an excellent album IMO - love it - just suspend any highbrow musical values you have (not saying the OP - I mean anyone that listens to it) and enjoy the moment - 80's Glam Metal at it's finest before all the drugs tore it down; or maybe you just had to be there Theatre of Pain Tour at Hammersmith with Cheap Trick in support; what a gig!
7. Wow! it's so damp it's killed Tinky Winky! Block up all the holes; make sure the floor has a damp proof layer, get a frost heater in there. If you really want to go to town DPC and insulate the walls and floor and dry line it.
8. Phwoar Crickey!!! Awesome Bass & a 1970s themed chocolate bump
9.
I say play to a level you are happy with. If you feel you could do better, practice. If you don't mind being a crap player but you enjoy it, what's the problem. No body should beat themselves up over their playing.
Absolutley - anyone can get better with dedication and practice but if you're happy doing what you're doing then keep doing what you're doing and enjoy it
10. ^ WHS I played exclusively with a pick for about twenty years, really thin one too (compared to most Pick players) I only started using my fingers when I started playing DB and now I mix and match - and for years people told me it wasn't "proper" bass playing, not so much now. Personally i think doing a 16 beat 4/4 walking bass line just sounds the mutts nuts - so much drive, but slower songs just suit the subtlety that you can apply with finger style. I still default to pick whenever things get tricky or insecurity kicks in during a gig.
11.
We were called Hot Club. A cross between Dave Edmonds, Chuck Berry and Eric Clapton. We were on the same bill on some Surrey/Hants gigs and he asked us to join him. He had Alan Fish on bass at the time.
Rings a bell actually - I mainly used to hang out down the Cartoon in Croydon; always used to chat to Dumpy down there - lovely chap; he always used to have his birthday party there and dress in a Tutu
12. Dumpy's Rusty Nuts at the Marquee : What a great venue it was
13. I have an lh1000 - good amp, really clear, really loud, no real character on its own but not a massive problem, just add whatver pedal you like, works well with my double bass too. It's a does what it says on the tin amp, bloody heavy tho and needs a tuner output.
14.
I've just got cat hairs on mine. I think I'm missing out
Judging where your cat's been from your avatar I'd definitely wipe them off
15. Just keep swimming there are bands out there with great people who want to put the effort in, you just need to keep trying - do some deps and open mic nights as well - it's a great way of meeting and playing with people without any commitment on either side
16. Hmm 1980's eh! Started with a Marshall 30 watt 12" speaker - pretty loud in the early eighties (had the option of this or the Roland bass thing - think I made the right choice) Then Carlsbro Stingray head and Selmer Cab which changed the gravitation field of the earth wherever I placed it; it was that heavy. The Trace BLX 80 when they first a came out - hated it Then Peavey Firebass 4x10 and 1x15 black widow set up after that which was brilliant and kept it for years until I got fed up humping it about
17.
Your money is always best spent on a better bass. If you're bored don't mess around with the bass, get lessons and practice. If you like the bass but don't like the tone get a good outboard eq.
what Mr B says ^^
18. My Lakland goes out of tune whenever I change the strings on it - about once every 10 years or so.....
19. I've used danish oil mainly on some knife handles I've made - comes up really nicely, is pretty cheap and goes a long way - to really smooth the wood dampen it after sanding then go over with scotch brite or wire wool
20. How about Slither by Velvet Revolver for a Hard Rock song.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKz2U4fvA4U Song that surprised me for a great bassline- Dancing Queen by Abba - great line http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFrGuyw1V8s
21. Maybe there was a lot of old stock in shops or it took a long while for them to filter over here - but 82 was when I got my first proper bass and they were all god awful the ones I tried then (and I went to just about every guitar shop in surrey and London at the time - I was keen in those days )- I ended up getting an Aria that I wish I'd kept now!
22. As Lowender and Miletone have mentioned '80s US Fenders were generally ropey, there are some great ones but I remember mostly they were ridicules at the time; most Jap Fenders (and everything from Matsumoku for that matter) was far superior. Saying that, try it - you might find a good one and if its a decent price an investment as well
23. The thing I like about amps and cabs is that you can get the best choice for both your speakers and your amp - most combos I've experienced have been a compromised as one or another. Also you obviously split the weight when you split the components ( although when their both very light in a combo who cares). You can also after the initial outlay upgrade either part as you fancy. Personally I've gone down the route of heavy analogue amp which although heavy is a manageable size and a lightweight cab - for my ears that gives me the traditional distorted sound I'm used to being an old git with something that doesn't hurt my back ( being an old git)
24. WHAT D'YA SAY?? Just take the misses along and get her to put her fingers in your ears next time. See solved ...!
25. Ha ha - I need to get an Ibanez SR now! Quite fancy a 5 string
