1. yes same here - have a pool of about 60-70 and play 40 or so changing as we want/audience wants
2.
Youth is wasted on the young
and money is wasted on the old It's interesting - I've always though it corresponds to the right and left brain side of things though - musical theory being more mathematical sits on the left side of the brain; playing by ear, patterns and improvisation the right side. Either will let you play to a decent level but I think different instruments and music sit on different hemispheres as well; classical favouring the left, jazz the right etc; piano the left, guitar the right etc. Interestingly I know an international concert pianist, very successful and brilliant on piano who is awful at playing by ear and jamming yet can sight read the most complex score and remember it in a single pass. Likewise I know play by ear musicians that come up with incredible free lines from thought and hearing yet go blank when asked what key they're in. I guess true brilliance, like artists, scientists and innovators, comes when a musician has both left and right brains strong and in balance..... either that or I may well be talking b*llocks as well...
3. If you can afford them I'd recommend Lindy Fralins - by far the best P sound I've ever come across
4. There's always an Aria ZZB as well - ZZ Top special
5. a few other forums I'm on are largely free but have an optional members area with a separate for sale section and offers etc - not a lot extra but enough to make you want to do it (and you get a free badge sent to you as well so you can appear sad to the general public as well)
6. yes I did the same with a an old foto flame MIJ P bass - really orange peely to start with - used 1200 grit wet and dry, then T cut then polish - came up looking fabulous
7. John Taylor - Aria SB; Pete Way & Nikki Sixx - Gibson Thunderbird; Duck Dunn - '57 P bass; Alan Lancaster - Fender Mustang; Jon Hall - Rockinbetters Rudy Sarzo - Washburn B20
8. Oh yes! You can't knock JT in full flow can you...awesome
9. my Hartke and Barefaced stack ticks over at about 3 or 4 during most gigs (medium sized halls etc) the few times I've a cranked it (and not to full volume as it was seriously hurting my ears) it manged to drown out a keyboardist and guitarist and had the drummer shaking his head and miming "too much"
10. I've had mine a couple of years now and done loads of gigs and rehearsals with it - few chips on the edges but still sounds brilliant and looks great - you'll love it
11. SO ...I did the original Spinal Tap tribute band for 17 years - Vinyl Tap, still do it on and off... What are the advantages/disadvantages? Everyone who comes along knows what they're getting so you 're playing to people who want to hear the music you play, usually makes for great gigs (so long as you're good enough to meet their expectations) Would we get more/less bookings? Usually more but people will expect a "show" rather than just a gig - it's also dependant on whether the band you're tributing is in fashion - with VT we started when ST was in the cinemas and got some great gigs, then went quiet for a few years until the video was released (got in the official companion book for that ) same again with the DVD. Would we need an agent? Depends how big you get/ how much work you want to put in yourself and where you want to play (and whether you want to give someone else a cut) Would we alienate some of the audience by playing music by one particular band? Not the audience as they'll know what to expect when they arrive - you'll only get people coming if they want to see DR Feelgood tho - although you might not get them if they don't know what you do (if you weren't a tribute) if you see what I mean Would we need to do the whole package, for example, dressing and acting like them etc..? Up to you really but my view is that if you market yourself as a tribute band then you need to go the whole hog - spandex, pyrotechnics, inflatable stonehenge - oh wait - that was us
12.
Dandelion, on 09 June 2013 - 07:08 PM, said: Three Letter Anagrams... I think you mean 'Acronyms' [/PEDANT]
Actually most have been initialisms not acronyms - acronyms make a word you can say like NATO or NIMBY etc [/SUPERPEDANT]
13. I think we should send one to John Hall
14.
but Ozzy[s]s voice[/s] is now f***ed.
fixed for you
15.
25 songs for an audition is crazy
It depends on the context really I suppose - if it's a jam based audition to see if you all gel (and I much prefer these for a first meet as anyone can play any song with enough practice but you can practice liking people!) then that's fine so long as everyone's aware and don't expect you to be note perfect (like the one I did the other day; about the same amount of songs 25 ish - three of the band knew it was an initial jam- no one told the guitarist so he seemed to have the hump with me jamming it (I'm the fastest song jamming blagger around so there weren't many bum notes) - chap was a tad on the arrogant "big I am" side so I wouldn't have played with them anyway so no great loss. If they expect note perfect then not more than about five songs with a week or two's notice; I'd also prefer a recording of the band actually playing the songs if they really want it to be bang on. as for cancelling the day before, probably a bit on the naughty side if it cost them rehearsal room money but I'm sure they could have just used it to practice themselves so what the hell
16. They're pretty much the same; Lakland perhaps very slightly shallower and I can get miles better action than on any P bass I've ever played - great player's bass (and if it's got Fralin's like mine it'll sound bloody excellent as well)
17. Nice inlays and wood - horrible shape though...
18. I think we should go for the poll and let the site decide the approach we want to take (so long as it's not detrimental to BC obviously) I completely understand RB's IP position if I'd have come up with and idea that loads of people copied then I'd be p*ssed off as well however attacking easy targets like BC and alienating your key market is not the way to go - creating your own cheaper "feeder" series of basses makes far more sense. I started playing Arias in the early eighties and hated P basses until I was seriously skint and could only afford a £99 Fenix - I've played nothing but P basses since in reality, moving from Fender Jap, Mexico, MIA and finally custom shop; so Fender have done pretty well out of me thanks to a cheap Jap copy - I could have easily been the same story for RB had there been a £99 RB copy available at the time... I'm at the stage now where I can afford any bass I Iike and even thought I always gravitate to P basses I've run through bloody loads of makes and shapes over the years; being Lemmy fan I've always fancied an RB, black one. I won't get one now, I only deal with companies I'm comfortable with. Anyway, lets have a poll
19. well you won't be able to sell it on here - it might be a fake - we couldn't take the risk
20.
There would be more options that I can think of at current Stop all RB content on the site Stop all RB like sales on the site Stop all RB copy content on the site Stop all RB like photos in sales on the site Stop all RB copy photos on the site Stop all RB copy photos in sales on the site (very high maintenance with this)
yes fair comment - what's clear is that it's taking a large amount of effort on the part of the mods and admins that could be well spent on something productive so a better solution is needed
21.
I think we'd only do this if the situation deteriorated significantly or the community requested it.
Start a poll and ask I suppose would be the solution - Options Carry on as suggested by Rickenbacker (i.e no copies photos etc) Stop all RB like photos from the site Stop all RB content from the site
22.
Bearing in mind that it is impossible to authenticate any instrument from photographs, the only logical action Basschat can take is to ban all images of Rickenbacker shaped instruments.
Aside from the "tit for tat" angle this approach would make sound sense and provide Basschat with a further level of protection - If as suggested a fake is passed off as original then discovered the I presume BC would be liable
23. I tried one of the white falcon things once - looked great from a distance but rubbish quality close up; cheap badly made bridge, sounded horrible, intonation was rubbish - didn't like it!
24.
electricity will take the shortest route to earth and if that is via you as opposed to down the other end of a long extension then it will,
True but that's why everyone is suggesting wireless systems - you have to be nuts to plug directly in...
