1. Nice bass - looks German or eastern European to me 50's to 70's I reckon. Finish looks like cuprinol fence preserver no.4 "walnut dream" so will be ideal for outdoor gigs
2. Get a secondhand one for about 6-800 quid that's all set up it'll save you a fortune. Or get one of the thomann ones or the gedo music ones and spend a couple of hundred getting them set up.mif you buy one of the cheap ones you'll spend miles more getting it playable and it'll still sound rubbish......
3. nope it's not that - I was thinking of this - http://www.musiciansfriend.com/bass/fender-mark-hoppus-signature-bass-guitar
4. You saying all Bobs are thick planks that no-one has heard of? well you have a point I suppose.... Looks like one of those Fender Precision artist models from a few years back - can't remember who but they were sea foam green, single volume pot... btw -
I was going to go for "Gertrude"
I think you should call it Gert and leave the rude part out...
5. My new Presto lights have been a revelation, thoroughly recommend them
6. that reminds me - you don't see any white dog poo any more do you....
7. most of mine seem to be going up a bit these days- I bought the paisley fender <- for £250 about ten years ago - I'm seen a few go for over £500.. decent well known guitars will always go up in the end - people wax lyrical about seventies and early eighties US precisions these days but I remember when they were mostly reviled and dirt cheap (wish I'd bought some then )
8. took me about 20 years I guess to get to the level of competence, experience and more importantly confidence in my playing that I can just enjoy almost all the time even if I'm just jamming stuff along on the spot. Still have bad days tho....
9. I've heard about this changing tone idea in the past and frankly wan't no truck with it. The tone knob on my bass is there to enhance the Feng Sui of the guitar not for actual use....
10. I've tried my Super 12T against both the 2x10 and 4x10 Markbass cabs - in both cases the Super Twelve was far louder and had better clarity
11. As bassinmyface says you won't get a true voicing with a mag pick up and I certainly use a piezo or mic for recording. Live however, especially at high volumes you won't Hear the difference, obviously you will in a low volume jazz scenario... I've had 2 schallers, quite handy having a volume but they're pretty cheap pickups. The Kent Armstrongs work fine with Romberg, mine has one as well and are far superior to schallers, clearer, more transparent tone. I use a Moses Graphite at the mo which is more or less like a KA but clearer again with slightly smoother response. You can borrow the KA for a few weeks if you want to try it, I need to change the cable on it as it's a bit crackly at the mo but you'll be very welcome to. I've finally tried the Prestos - what a difference! Great to play, not very low tension but lighter and even across the strings, E response is excellent, very clear, and response across the strings is very even. the feel of them is very nice under the fingers, low tack, unlike the bloody weedwckers, and tuning stability is amazing - I was expecting the usual slipping out of tune for a few days but they seem to have settled down already. very happy so far.
12. Those slap happy weedwackers are very grippy strings - pretty awful actually, mine were like playing with washing line. Be careful of your fingers as well as they put a lot of strain on your joints and tendons with the extra sideways load caused by gripping when you slide
13. Hi Clarky, try Redeye print in Woking - run by one of my best mates (our guitarist) - His name's Simon Austin http://www.redeyeprint.co.uk/contact.htm Tell him I sent you and he'll probably double the price
14. yes been there too - went from an old Peavey Firebass 4x10 and 1x15 that I used for years to a Barefaced Super twelve and EA i800. Super light, hated the sound. Swapped for a Mark Bass, hated it, tried a Orange Terror and hated that as well. Borrowed an old ABM ashdown for a gig and hey presto sounds awesome. £80 later from ebay I have an old heavy amp into a new lightweight speaker - best of both worlds. Depends on what you play and what you hear probably but to me older amps are just smoother, creamier, fuller and sound louder to me.
15. should be here today so I'll let you know. I wasn't impressed by the weedwackers at all tbh and agree with the tension comment - they felt no less and maybe more than my thomastiks. The covering felt really grippy to me as well; I'm sure that didn't help my finger at all with the extra sideways force in slides. Here's hoping Prestos will save the day - I really don't want to go back to all the feedback faffing about with nylon strings if I can
16. yes I had a fenix like the one i the german photo - excellent guitar played it as my main bass for ten years until it needed a refret then gave it away to my friends kid to learn on. Got mine from the Scottish shop in around 1992 (sound control or something, think it was Glasgow?) £99! They came in black, sunburst, white and red I think. The sculpted headstock are the only ones I've seen - not sure if this means yours is and earlier or later one but as far as I know none of them had designs on them as standard
17. now see what you've done! I was happy with prestos until you posted that now I'm going to have to start looking at non mag pickups again as well I'll give the prestos a go first though I think!
18. Hello, well fresh back from my hols and after 4 weeks of resting my dodgy tendon in my finger it's no better at all. ho hum. Anyway, while I was ordering my new Presto Light strings to see if they'll help I suddenly thought that I have a set of Thomastik Weichs and a set of steel cored Weedwacker things sitting about. I could flog them but then got to wondering after all the posts we see on "what are these like, should I try this/that or the other combination of strings and pickups whether I should just loan them out to people that want to try them (I've a spare kent armstrong as well) - what do you think? Bob
19. I just use my standard bass stack - Ashdown ABM and barefaced super twelve with a boss line switch to change between the two instruments, set the amp up for the DB then add an eq pedal in for my EB (when I can be bothered..depends on how many numbers I'm doing on EB)
20. If I get round to changing the dodgy cable on it I've a kent armstrong PU you're welcome to borrow for a couple of weeks if you want to try it (it's best held on with gaffa tape - yay!) I can probably rustle up some thomastiks as well if you're stuck for strings
21. Mag is definitely the way to go if you want mega loud with no feedback problems. You'd need to change your strings as well though; super silvers have no steel in them ;(
22. I think most self taught people go through the "bloody hell I can't play this, bloody hell I can and I'm brilliant, bloody hell actually I'm useless" cycle all through their playing career - I know I have; it only really settled down for me after about 25 years playing when I really branched out into different styles of music and learnt DB as well. It's a confidence and self belief thing as much as anything. Bass playing is a journey and there's no right or wrong speed to go at or right path to take; the only thing to do is to keep journeying and enjoy the ride. It's not a competition either; I'm sure despite how much you put yourself down your experiences have given you a style that others might not be able to play. There will be people out there that you'll enjoy playing with whether it's live or recording projects - keep at it
