Thanks Iain, much appreciated. I've always wanted to visit Orkney - anywhere that had a ruler called Thorfinn Ravenfeeder must be a great place to hang out

So I'm getting rid of the weedwackers I bought the other week and I'm going to get myself some Presto Nylons but I don't know what gauge to get? I used to play Thomastik Weichs which are obviously light, the weekwackers are god alone knows. Prestos I should think Light or ultra light? I play mainly 50's RnR, bit of slap, bit of jazz and mainly pizz - what do you think?

Using my superior deductive skills I have successfully identified this as a double bass. OK then (sorry) looks a lot like my Framus, but could be a lot of 50's - 60's european basses

Markbass disappointment..............ok, but not great.
BobVbass replied to EmmettC's topic in Amps and Cabs
I've tried a few class D amp - markbass, EA i800, GK and I didn't like any of them really so eventually went back to an old Ashdown ABM. what makes the difference for me is the cab - I now use a Barefaced super twelve instead of a 4x10 and a 1x15 - I get all the volume, all the tone and can carry it all with one hand -
Slightly annoying buzz when I hit open 'A' string

slacken the tension on the other strings to change the neck relief as well - see if that makes a difference -

I had a similar this when I knocked my bridge slightly off centre; strings we flapping against the board as teh radius was off - could try that maybe? Otherwise try damping bits like behind the bridge, tailpiece, wire, spike thingumy (technical term - sorry) tuners as well - mine buzz like hell unless I take the slack up on them -
Excellent news Clarky - glad there's a happy ending. I have to say Malcolm Healey is an all round good chap, I had him fix my bridge and put adjusters in - very decent price and fantastic workmanship.

metal core slap strings? jazzicato vs slaphappy weedwackers
BobVbass replied to BassInMyFace's topic in EUB and Double Bass
So - quick update few weeks on.... They've settled in fairly well tuning wise, fairly stable although E is more difficult to tune than my old strings. Definitely easier on the fingers, no blisters at all after hours of play. Tone wise amplified is ok - very loud through a Moses Graphite P/U - A-G strings sound quite smooth compared to my old Thomastiks, G string very clear. E String after initially sounding quite clear has gone fairly muddy now and strangely has also gone Dark brown/deep red in colour! Feel and looks - A and D strings seem to be the same composition and coating, fairly matt coating, smooth feel nylon; the E string appears to be someone's secondhand washing line - slightly grippier than the other strings and the G string appears to be very thin coating, almost PTFE like and slippery. So - any good? Well yes they're kind of ok, nice on the fingers but nothing to write home about. They're cheap and you get what you pay for I guess.... I'll keep them on for a bit and then I think I'll try one of Clarky's recommendations and buy some steel core Prestos. When I swap them over, if anyone wants to try them give me a shout. -
bassmans selling one of my old Kent Armstrong on the DB for sale section - I only sold it as I bought a Moses - excellent mag pick up - would be a lot better tone than the p bass. You could mix it with the realist....

yes have done loads of times off ebay and here. rules I use - photos must confirm it's genuine unless it's been put up at a great (or silly price) only buy at auction not buy it now make sure the chap selling has a good rep know your prices that way if you don;t like it you can usually sell it for what you've bought it for

I use an ashdown ABM and super twelve T for both my electirc and DB rigs - v loud rock and roll - it's superb, loud, clear and smooth - almost all of that is down to the cab; I've tried loads of amps with it all with excellent results

metal core slap strings? jazzicato vs slaphappy weedwackers
BobVbass replied to BassInMyFace's topic in EUB and Double Bass
well I bit the bullet and got some steel core weedwackers - replacing my spiro weichs - Initial observations is that they don't seem much less tension than the spiros so not sure how easier on the fingers they'll be - slightly more "grippy" on the slide but that may change as they play in. Volume through the pick up is loud and clear; acoustically they're loud too - the e is very well defined. Overall they sound maybe slightly less bright that the spiros, maybe a little smoother and thuddy - very close though. I'll try them out in anger Thursday night and let you know how they go -

Blimey let me know how you get on with these especially if the low E gets a decent pizz sound as well - I shred my fingers every practice and gig at the mo! -
Yes gear 4 music special. I had one of those, they weren't bad. They weren't good either.

Hi All, I bought this a few years back and have never used it - can't for the life of me why I bought it to be honest as I never use effects or anything. Anyway here it is for sale, as new in original as new box as well - excellent preamp. specs below: - can't remember what I paid for it but I think it was around the £150 mark so I'll see how I go at [s]£80[/s] 65 posted The DB 924 FET preamp features the circuitry of the innovative OBP-1 onboard preamp in a sturdy and compact package.
I had been browsing their site but thanks for posting that link - they had a scratched bass for sale at half price, which is now MINE! It's not exactly what I was looking for; it's fully carved and it's got violin corners, but it looks pretty sweet anyway.
nice one! I keep looking at them - they look good enough to be a great starting point (and they'll customise bits for you) but cheap enough so I wouldn;t worry about all the Rock and Roll bashing about I do. ow just have to convince my wife!
