1. I have an identical model from the same year and these are terrific instruments. I'd be interested to know where you found the serial number lookup though? I've looked online & can find lots of info on Tokai guitars but very little about the basses. GLWTS
2. Sounds reasonable. Stripping the body would be a bit drastic I think!
3. I normally prefer a rosewood fb, but this could sway me! Great looking bass. Re. the dates, do you have any reason to suspect that the neck & body are not the original bass. Could it just be a '75 Jazz with replacement PUs & pots?
4. Whereabouts are you? Re. Collection/trying it out
5. Ooh! ... tempting. Which of the pics most accurately represents the colour? The top ones appear more off white - like an aged Olympic White, the lower ones more yellowish ... more ike a pale-ish butterscoth ... on my screen at least. Either way it looks fabulous
6. Does the price include shipping?
7. Whereabouts are you?
8. Just bought a Tokai Jazz bass from Gary. Excellent communication, speedy delivery and great packaging! A pleasure to deal with. Cheers.
9. Are those reverse tuners btw?
10. Great looking bass! That would be a perfect match for my '82 Squier JV Precision! Whereabouts are you?
11. I have for sale a set of P/J pickups recently removed for a custom build I bought on here last year. To the best of my knowledge, and as I was informed when I bought he bass, they are a Di Marzio Model J neck pickup, and a Di Marzio-style Precision pickup taken from an old Westone bass. I'm not sure of the vintage of either of these, but they sound great, and are well matched for tone & volume IMO - although that is obviously subjective. Looking for £35 posted for the Model J and £25 posted for the Westone Precision ... or £55 posted for the pair. Cheers!
12. Hmmm ... very tempted ... had my eye out for one of these for a while, although I haven't actually heard one yet! ... never been able to find anywhere with them in stock ...
13. I have one of these in my main rig. Through a Peavey IPR1600 ... it rocks!
14. Yes, they are a touch on the fat side! Great sound though ☺
15. Updated photos ... and price drop to £895
16. 4-string, long scale 65, 75, 100, 115 - which I think is the only set they do. Tried to post a photo last night, but apparently I have used up my quota :-) Will try & sort that out later.
17. As the title says, one set Rotosound black tapewounds ... about 18 months old, but only used for one rehearsal for a project that didn't go any further. Posting this on my mobile, so will add photo as soon as I can get to my laptop! £17.50 posted in UK
18. Due to my recent acquisition of a very lovely 1982 JV Precision, I am considering moving on my differently lovely G&L JB. Does what it says on the headstock - Leo's final take on his original Jazz bass: http://glguitars.com...es/JB/index.asp I bought it in Oct 2013 from the original owner who had bought it in 2009 as a special order direct from the US. I don't remember all the details (if I can dig anything up I'll post it), but I believe it may have been a special finish - it's a red metallic which I would probably best describe as dark burgundy. As far as I can tell from their web site not a current colour. Also a parchment scratch plate, which I believe was non-standard. It's in virtually mint condition ... I think I noticed one very slight hairline surface scratch, but I'll have a good look in daylight and try and get some clearer photos. It plays beautifully and has great resonance and sustain - even unamplified it sounds a dream - possibly the best Jazz I have ever played ... so I may change my mind when I next play it (hence 'Feeler ... '). RRP for a standard model was listed as over £2,000 last time Bass Direct had one in, and they were offering a couple of used examples in the last year or so for around £1,300 (if I remember correctly), so I'm looking for £975 collected (with G&L branded hard case) - delivery by negotiation if required, but I'd much prefer it to be seen and played first. Comes with certificate of authenticity, which I have obviously filed away somewhere safe, so will have to dig that out! Also consider trades with cash my way, e.g. for a lower priced Jazz (an early JV Squier Jazz would be tempting), or if something else took my fancy ...
19. +1 for Godin. I had an A4 a few years ago & it was sweet! Not really a 'pure' acoustic though ... more a hollow bodied electric with piezo pickup. That said, the amplified tone was far better than any 'pure' electro-acoustic I've ever heard. Strung with thomastik jazz flats and with the right eq gives a very passable double bass-ish sound ... also delivers pretty good electric tones. Mine was fretted but I also played the fretless which was stunning! Only downside for me was the weight which got a bit much by the end of a 2 hour set ☺ I replaced it with a Status Electro (original version with just the piezo pickup) which was equally good but a lot lighter! I then moved on to EUB ... ☺
