I don't think there's an incorrect way to play/perform "Hard To Handle". I think some bands might play it poorly but incorrect, no. Just my honest opinion. I love Otis's version, it' the tops to me. However I dig Tom singing it and I also like the way The Black Crows rock it. Blue
There is a wrong way to play this tune as evidenced by most incarnations that have come up in bands i've been in. Everyones playing the right stuff "technically" but the all important groove is missing. I think a lot of the feel is hard to replicate. Depends how self-critical one is. I always thought it sucked when we played it whilst others were more than happy.

Someone has to say something before the event. Put yourself in his shoes and imagine how you'd feel turning up to find another bass player plugged in and ready to go. Not cool and karma would be waiting. If its just a jam thing why not invite them all along. Or one at a time?

Hair metal , or death metal?

Deep Purple - what genre do they live in? (completely out of my depth) -
At a Basschat gathering in the south west a few years back we had a nice fella come along who had played with Sabbath. During initial soundchecks the band had a problem with his bass sound which he thought was great. He couldn't work out what they didn't like. It wasn't until he turned it up, started distorting and making what was (in his eyes) an awful sound did the rest of the band give him the thumbs up!

4 Question You Would Ask A New Prospective Band
BottomE replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
Yeah, at the bar level it's not worth it to get caught up in petty dislikes.I don't like this song, that strictly high school level band mentality. If those songs bother a person so much I'd say, join an originals band. Blue
I guess one questions (for covers band) is: How do you choose the tunes? The phrase "high school mentality" is a good one as i know of players who want to play songs that are "cool" regardless of whether there is an appetite for them from any perspective audience. Ignoring the wishes of punters and venues is plainly stupid but i can remember many instances of song suggestions which were ridiculous. When challenged the suggester might say something like "its got a great groove/interesting solos/amazing harmonies" which all may be true but if the tune is relatively unknown and you are playing the typical cover band/party band gig it seems like a waste of time. There isn't an easy solution to this. We've sent hundreds of emails with links to stuff over the past few years and had some great debates about which tunes will have some mileage and which won't. Its got quite heated on occasion. The solution we are running with at the moment is that the 4 main members of the band can choose one track which the others have to learn. We then take 4 tracks to a rehearsal and prepare them for gigging. The ultimate test is the gig and we all know if something has worked or hasn't. Alternatively, we don't rehearse and take a couple of new tunes to a gig and play it them for the first time during the set. These songs are normally cushioned between favourites so that if they don't go down well there is something popular just around the corner. The key to working this way is for everyone to:

Really nail their part of the song
Ensure everyone is learning the same version (not obscure live versions)
Keep the tune faithful to the original structure so that everyone knows where the beginning middle and end happen (this is also useful if you use deps as it makes it easier for them)
-
Are they still so clever and classless and free?
BottomE replied to colgraff's topic in General Discussion
Interesting reading this thread. Class is a strange concept whatever way you look at it. What does it matter? None of us can choose our parents or upbringing. However, if i like a song/band then i like it. Not being someone who reads the music press or has an interest in the "back story" this isn't something that gets in the way of my enjoyment of artists/songs. -
Seems nearly impossible to come up with an original song name

4 Question You Would Ask A New Prospective Band
BottomE replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
How long has band been going What happened to last bass player How many confirmed gigs in the diary How often do you rehearse I think it would be pretty obvious how able the band was from the initial audition. Most of the the critical stuff you will only find out on the job. Asking questions is all well and good but the proof is in the tasting. I've been in many bands that can talk the talk. -

Scott Devine has some really good advice regarding GAS
BottomE replied to miles'tone's topic in General Discussion
Trying stuff is the way to go. How do you know what you like otherwise? I didn't marry my first girlfriend or second or third but after some experimenting had a much better idea of what to look for. Most of us know that buying new gear isn't going to transform our playing but with a sense of perspective it can be fun and as most of the second hand stuff holds its price quite well it needn't be expensive. The message is correct in Scotts video which, i think, must be aimed at the lower end of the common denominator spectrum. -

If you can afford it - kids (if you have them) are still eating then go for it. Buy what you want as you're a long time dead -
How much time do you spend playing songs you'll never perform?
BottomE replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
Does this include all the songs your band say they want to play but no-one else gets round to learning? (sigh)
Best way around this is not to rehearse a tune and just play it at the gig instead. -
How much time do you spend playing songs you'll never perform?
BottomE replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
Most of my playing is on stuff that will never be gigged. If its not stuff that i am composing then it would be:

Midi files - converted in Cubase to have proper synths/pianos and guitars and then lay some bass over the tune
.WAV downloads from YouTube of songs that i've always wanted to learn - Sir Duke for instance and this one paid off as did a dep and the singer said "you probably won't know this and can sit out the "tricky" bit". Boy were they gobsmacked when i played it whilst looking off into the distance looking uninterested
Jazz play-along tunes - use the Aebersold backing tracks where you can pan the bass out of the original and play over the keys and drums
Files from Scott Devines website
YouTube Jam Tracks
With all the great recording software and YouTube its never been easier to expand your knowledge. -

If he was American i wonder if people would feel the same? Dunno. For me i like the first Level 42 album "Level 42". His bass playing is obvioulsy excellent and theres plenty of evidence on the internet of him playing other styles rather than slapping. And he sings at the same time! -
Good mix of approaches going on with the different tracks. For my ear needs a bit more fatness down at the dark end. currently it seems just a little hollow on the overall BOOM factor - easy to fix. Keep it up x

This is a songwriting experiment. Started with the vocal track from an acappella CD and then constructed a tune to go underneath it. FIrst time playing and recording a 6 string too. Superb gig on the end of Bournemouth pier. Actually allowed to drive up the pier and park right at the end. Stunning views, great hospitality, excellent crowd and were well fed and watered. Result.

If we're including more recent punk I'd throw these in there: Chris #2 - Anti-Flag Matt Freeman - Rancid Mike Dirnt - Green Day Andrew Seward - Against Me! Saw them supporting Tower of Power a couple of years ago in Camden. Huge band - must have been about 12 of em onstage.
