1. Yep. EQ flat and minor adjustments for the room if necessary. I have the TC cabs and they do tend to sound a bit harsh with the mids boosted. As others have said, also depends on the space left in the mix when all in the band are playing and then of course the style of music.
2. Fret buzz on a fretless
3. Kick, snare, hi-hat and two cymbals. Thats what our drummer uses. In this way we are blessed.
4.
I don't blame you, mate. I had a terrible time trying to word both my posts, was painfully aware that I didn't get the clarity I was after, and was hoping that someone would chime in with better wording.
Thank you for taking the time to articulate a splendid reply. I understand what you are saying and it does sound like a possible explanation which i hope turns out to be the case.
5. This thread has got me thinking about how long it takes all of us to setup at a gig but figure it must have already been done...surely
6. Our drummer takes about 30 minutes and has a tiny kit. Brings his own carpet, a towel, a bag of approx 100 spare sticks of all assortments and special trainers. Cases all over the show. Hes got this huge bag about 6 foot long full of stands and i help him with it if access is tricky (ooh err missus) otherwise he can drag it on wheels. I understand at gigs he needs to tune his kit but it does make me wince sometimes cos it seems to go on for a long time. That said, I'd rather have a good drummer who takes a long time to set up and is really annoying and makes me want to punch from time to time than a bad drummer who is efficient and nice.
7.
Tell me about it. But if you want to make a decent living out of music you're not always going to play what you want. I've had years of doing that. Started off playing in a 50's 60's Blues Rock band, playing Allman Bros and obscure Beatles songs, to now, getting prepared for the cruises in late summer. Even one MD told us that throughout the 6-week tour they do not want nothing before 1980. Sucks, but if I'm getting paid to play music, I'll play Robbie Williams and KOL to shitmunchers all day long.
Absobloodylutely mate. I am going in the reverse direction to you. Started on the paid gigs, went pro and played whatever was put in front of me. Learned a lot (i hope). Now i am playing songs ONLY from before 1980 in one band and another band whose choice of covers just about surface a hit on Google
8. Thank you folks. BassTractor i lost you halfway through the post but get the gist. I was setup in a corner and due to space limitations my cab was almost pressed against 2 walls - 1 behind and 1 to the side. Didn't really have time to fiddle with the EQ properly because the set was bang bang bang one after the other and i had difficulty reaching the head with space limitations. Got loads of EQ options on amp and a Sadowsky outboard preamp and MultiComp compressor. Might actually force me to use them. Usually i use a Jazz Bass with Audere PreAmp straight into my amp and have got used to being able to do EQ from the bass and leaving the amp pretty well flat. In addition, this is the first time i have played on the right hand side (looking at the band) for about 5 years and truth be told the whole band sounded a bit weird to me. Of course as the bass player i was the only one who noticed Come to the conclusion that there were so many variables at this gig that maybe i shouldn't use it as a benchmark.
9. Right - thanks folks i'll try this. Remember mentioning this before on BC and the opinion then was that i'd be a fool to do it so like a good Catholic i didn't try it. Sod the Hail Marys i'll give it a go.
10. Thanks guys. Just sat with it now in USB interface/Cubase etc and sounds great. Even watching the output meter as i strike the notes and there is no noticeable difference. I think i will take it out to the next gig and see if it was something to do with the room. May also take a Compressor. Start the gig in by-pass mode and if the issue re-occurs see if adding some compression will boost the necessary frequencies. Longer term it will be string heights and PuP adjustment. Failing that i have some expensive firewood.
11. Hi folks Finally got round to upgrading a bass that has been lying around for ages. Its a Korean Squier P Bass from around 1993 ish. The upgrades were: Fender US P Bass PuPs Vintage Wiring with Old style Oil/Paper Capacitor (bought off of Ebay) New Pots New Jack New Bridge New Strings Before gigging the bass last night i played it at home into my USB interface linked to Cubase through headphones and all sounded good. Great in fact, the bass seemed to have come alive with the upgrade and sounded lovely. On the gig i found that there were 3 notes that seemed lower in the mix than all the others. F#, F, E - the 3 lowest notes in "normal" tuning. The higher up on the fretboard i go on the bottom string the less of an issue this becomes until at about 6th fret, Bb, it is performing as you would expect. So after the long winded preamble may i ask for some suggestions of things that might help to fix this issue? 2 things to add are that this was not an issue on this bass before the upgrade. The venue was one that i had never played at before so was unfamiliar with the room. Thank you Jerry
12. My band play some Chic stuff. Bernies lines are very difficult to nail - not technically but the feel. The groove that he generated makes him in my top 10 bass players. Truly unique player and someone who always appeared to be uninterested in amps/strings/effects. I would expect that if he played a £30 cash convertor bass he would still outgroove most of us mere mortals. He was a natural.
13. Timely thread. Last weekend doing a gig and my D snapped mid song. First time this has happened during a gig in many years of playing. Singer and guitarist did an acoustic tune whilst i quickly restrung. Never had a backup. Wish i had and will be taking a backup for tomorrows gig.
14. Run for Cover - David Sanborn just for the hell of it and some Erick Krasno for a potential gig
15. Ah this old chestnut Ain't nothing wrong with a bit of appropriate slapping. We've started to do the Bruno Mars track "Treasure". Bassline is a simple slap groove and totally suits the song. Its only another style of playing your instrument.
16. This really...love the Dan and his solo stuff
How good is he ?? Well .... good enough that The Nightfly would be amongst the half dozen or so CD's I'd buy on the day the insurance cheque landed after my house had burned down. Apart from the great songs , the effortless fusion of jazz influence into pop , and the concept of a young man's hopes, dreams and experiences , the album is a who's who of top US session bass players. It should be essential homework for anyone who visits this site. I might add that Mr F is a master of a craft I've fought tooth and nail to master all my life. The ability to use your bland and limited singing voice and work with it to the greatest advantage. Bandana , Ushanka , scooter helmet , beany hat that my wife knitted me and Afrika Corps cap all well and truly doffed.
17. I always leave a bit of volume in reserve on the bass. Run at about 80%. It gives a bit of room to adapt to the various sounds from others in the band and saves having to walk all the way back to the amp.
18. For me professionalism is sorting all this stuff out BEFORE THE GIG. Discuss, agree and then do as promised. Its very easy.
19.
I just passed the 8,000 listens mark!!
New track recorded in a night. Started with the vocal track and then added some stuff. By 1:06 my bass head got bored and started to experiment. Lovely Yamaha bass on this track. https://soundcloud.com/bottome/aeiou-funked-up-version
20. Heres a little ditty that started as just a vocal track that i found lurking on my laptop. Bored one night i decided to put some bass and keys along with it. Tried to play it cool but got bored by 1:06 and started to go off at a tangent. The bass is a Yamaha BB1100s which is a corker. https://soundcloud.com/bottome/aeiou-funked-up-version
21.
You have to be careful running 212/410 and a 210.... UNLESS the 210 is twice the impedance...as the 210 will get the same power as the larger more powerful cab. You may well find you are pushing the rig hard and caning the smaller cab. You might be better off just running the 212/410. unless the idea is visual..
Cabs are TC Electronic RS212 and RS210 both 8 ohm rated at 400 watts each. Most gigs i can get away with running the amp at 8 ohms and one cab but either way the cabs should be able to handle 600 watts at 4 ohms which is all i need.
22. Yes, all those i have met at Bashes or doing a bass trade have been good girls and guys.
23.
I'd recommend you buy my GK2001RB, killer sound, gorgeous amp, massive tonal variety, not so sure about the lightweight bit, but hey, you can't always have everything! ;-)
Thanks for the recommendation. It would blow the crap out of my speakers.
I can emphasise with the OP...... 6 months ago I had a little money spare so decided to upgrade from my LMII. Got a LM III and was underwhelmed, it was virtually identical, just newer. So started with a little bit of GAS and have just traded the LMIII on here for a TTE RJ 500 head. Now this does sound and look different and my 210T cab looks a bit weird under such a (relatively) wide head. So now I've just traded up to a RJ 15" cab to go with the RJ head. Trouble is no tuner lineout on the head out so have bought a Korg Pitchblack. for tuning.... It's been fun researching and have had 4 new amp, amp cover, cab, and tuner days... In total spent £400 on this total upgrade for something heavier and wider than what I started with! Could have bought one of those GB combos for that money and kept my existing rig!
Yeah there is a lot of choice and have a feeling may have a similar ride to Yorky. So far i like the look of the Tecamp PUMA - just to be different...
24.
If you have the TC cabs have you considered the TC heads?
Had a go on a couple of TC heads and didn't float my boat. Looking for something a little more fizzy. As Westwood said there is a lot of choice at this price band.
