1.
I've done a few down in Portland near Weymouth, Dorset. It was a long time ago but i remember the money was very good and that they provided dressing rooms and refreshment. There's obviously a drinking culture - we had a room full of seamen. If you can cope with that part its not a bad gig.
No smutty comments about my carefully worded innuendo :-( Disappointed of Basschat

3. In all seriousness it probably takes about 1 minute to find out if:

they can keep time
play at the right tempo
don't do stupid fills
have good "feel"
If they tick all the above then you should be fine.
4. Used to find all kinds of stuff on hairy cabs. Sometimes desirable outcomes , guitarist used to roll spliffs and drop his weed which stuck to my hairy cab - some undesirable - dog, cat, human hair yuck! Not a problem any more as got two of these. Hair free. Problem solved
5. Look at my face - "not bothered". I don't think the audience cares as long as a good show is delivered. I don't even own one - prefer to print out on A4 paper in big bold type and place on floor. On dep gigs where the band have their own arrangement of a tune its important to know where the changes are. I'd rather someone use a stand though than make mistakes.
6.
All depends on the money.
This for me too. Most gigs are in a 10 mile radius - we are extremely lucky. We've done gigs all over the south of England but will charge extra if there is some mileage. Most of our gigs are party's/weddings so the money we can charge is worth a journey. For a £80 pub gig i'd be hesitant to travel too far.
7. There's normally a crossover of material between different bands and after a while your library gets so that it isn't such a shock. You have a lot of work to do so break it down into smaller chunks. 5 tunes a day, something like that. Appreciate you are helping a mate but as a rule the effort, in this case, exceeds the reward. 2 reasons i would turn it down - don't have the time - i like to learn the sh*te out of a tune. Good luck.
8. Seems like a trusting gesture. Gives you the opportunity to take your time. Would like to think that the owner won't get ripped off by some unscrupulous folks. Time will tell.
9. Too many issues to sort out. Get another drummer and let this guy find something at his own level. Come to realise that life is too short for these type of compromises.
10. The guy who used it said that he struggled with it on stage but loved it when heard from the audience perspective.
11. We all know that the sound you hear on stage is different to what a punter in the audience will experience. I've never really been in a situation where someone else has been playing my rig at a gig as my lot don't do shared gigs very often. On the weekend we played a party and the guy was in a band and asked if they could get up and play a few numbers. It was great being able to hear my rig from the back and side of a large room as a punter would hear it. Also gave me a couple of ideas in terms of some tweaks that could be made. If you've not done this i'd recommend it - realised that i had a touch too much bass and needed a little more mids.
12. Go and try some out and see what feels comfortable - do you have a budget?
13. Its useful to get a sense of a band before going for an audition in terms of ages, level of commitment and musical influences. Colour or length of hair seems a bit OTT. We live in an image/brand world these days so kids specifying hair/guitar colour is probably very normal for them. I've been searching for an ad that says "grumpy middle aged bass player into wearing his wifes undies". Alas, this has not surfaced yet.
14. 30+ years playing. Happened twice. Both times it was digging in on the G string.
15.
Air bass doesn't count but Alan Partridge miming Palladino and 'Music For Chameleons' always cracks me up.
That's ruddy bloody brilliant.
16. Really? What a strange combination. MM and Simple Minds. You live and learn.
17. Love this Rafferty tune. He ended up living round the corner from me and saw him about a lot. Not a fan of Baker Street really - probably due to overkill but it helped find this which is a great tune. 18. Here's one of a band that i play for occasionally.
19. Purchasing bass number 7 was the point at which it became "us or them" from Mrs BottomE. I try and keep most of 'em outta the way and have a couple on stands strategically placed around the house. Got 2 dogs and kids and a busy house so its in my interest to keep them in their cases and away from potential hazards. I wouldn't say that she hated them - just that there is a limit.
20. Maybe having to pay tax is the measure of a pro player - or a rubbish accountant... I have to pay tax on musical income and work with many pros but don't think of myself in terms of pro or semi pro. Neither do the guys i play with.
21. I've been "pro" in so much as it was my sole income for 5 years. Nowadays, semi-pro as i have another (larger) income from other activities.
22. Love this thread http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jMcA4MpSyk
23. Played it on a dep gig over the weekend and can confirm that it was a crowd-pleaser for young and old. Don't give a grannys grapefruit about the technicalities as our role as a band is to entertain the public and this song did that. I did listen to it and "merge" some of the original lines into my "interpretation" of the bass line. Not one of the punters said anything about the choice of passing notes - they just got up and danced.
24. I'd struggle to hate anyone - particularly people i've not met. Might not like their style, taste, gear, genre of music, clothes, colour of bass (Green ffs) or the band they are in but hate - no.
25. Any colour but green. Never ever seen a nice green bass.
