I signed up and got really confused with all the emails and which content i could and couldn't access. The emails dropped off and then restarted? I found it a bit "in yer face" with all the eMarketing and felt like i had to be careful about which buttons i pressed as didn't want to inadvertently sign myself up for something. Like to dip in and out - Scotts stuff is great but in reality i've enough books and resources to last me a lifetime.

Used it on a gig with a sound limiter last night. Really helped define the sound in a venue i've played before and struggled to get definition. I'm a convert.
I took a chance on buying a Spectracomp compressor as I'd liked the one on the BH500 head which is sold. Not looking back, it's a great across the spectrum unit! Only problem is every little bum note can be heard :-) My other half says she hasn't heard me so clearly in all the time she's been coming to gigs, especially the individual notes not just the low end rumble! Horses for courses, doesn't work for everyone, it does for me!!
With you on that Barney. I thought i had a good sound! The compressor has really opened things up in terms of the clarity, especially basslines that have a lot of notes in them, chords, octaves, slap.
Depends what your trying to do with it. I'd start with EQ -> Comp -> FX. But also try putting it right in front of the Amp. Use your ears.
I've got the same EBS Multicomp and i put it in the send and return rather than direct in with the bass. No scientific reason for this - just trial and error.

Fair play to them pushing the boat out. Unfortunately it sank quickly without trace. Why others think that it should b applauded is up to them. I'm not a big fan of Bowie but would struggle to imagine him enjoying it. The show stank of jump on the bandwagon, milk the moment, up its own bum tribute TV. Poor effort. Just my 2p.

You and i are moving in opposite directions. I've not used compression for ages (years) although had a nice EBS Multicomp in my gig bag for ages. Anyway, i dug it out and have started to use it again (in send and return) and found it helps focus the sound in some venues. Also had more nice comments about the bass sound from punters which makes you think. Lots of variables in terms of how transparent the compression is and the amount that it is used. Experiment was the advice i was given and has proved to be good advice.

Unnecessary middle class codswallop.

Van Morrison moon dance - ever REALLY listened to it ?

You've let a very unpopular cat out of the bag who goes by the name of Moondance Coincidentally, I have also got to do this tune on a gig in a weeks time. Managed to get away with not playing it over 30 odd years of gigging (started young) but they all get ya in the end. -
Always liked the sound of Barts - for me they have a more modern tone.

I use either midi files (huge variety in quality) for "known" tracks if i want some chords and a rhythm to play along to. Then just assign instruments via Cubase to make them sound half-decent Youtube has loads of backing tracks with bass removed. You can convert YouTube pages to .mp3 and import into Cubase. Alternatively, get the original off of Youtube and then eq the bass out (once you've had a good listen to the original line). There are lots of backing track services you might want to consider using one of the above methods should keep you busy for a long time.
No it's not. Several of Carole King's biggest hits were first recorded and released by other artists. When she released her own self-penned songs later, are you seriously suggesting that made her a covers act?
Thought we were getting somewhere...you make a good point.
Me too . . . . although what about someone like Elton John? Are his songs 'half covers' because Bernie Taupin writes all the words? Or is 'Elton John' an original artist comprised of Reg Dwight & Bernie Taupin? Damn - I had things straight in my mind before thinking of that one!
know what you mean but there have always been songwriters - its the artist that the public connect the song to and will hear performing the track.

If someone else wrote the song then its a cover. Jazz, classical would fall into this definition, happy with that. Self penned - (as Skank put it) is the only other category. Tribute acts are just cover bands with a theme and (probably) frilly outfits.

Each to their own. I know a guy who has made a mint from selling number plates. He offered one to me at a discount - i nearly puked at the cost. I asked him why people buy them - after the blurb about investment he said that in most cases In his opinion a lot of purchases are vanity - people who want a bit of attention and show others that (in his words) they can waste money. I can't imagine ever wanting to buy one but whatever floats your boat.

Reasons For Not Joining A Band
Lack of gigs
Poor ability
Unreliable people
Egomania
Play too loud
No sense of humour
We think of ourselves as a working band - to work we need to provide a service that prospective clients are willing to pay for. To answer your question - we edge toward playing tunes that:

will work with the lineup
fit the general tone of the band
might work in different settings
and most importantly

that people know and (we have a hunch) will go down well
Its trial and error. There have been tunes that bomb surprisingly and then again some that are popular that you wouldn't have thought. For example, we do a cover of a tune called The Rent by Gwen Guthrie - nor particularly famous - but it always goes down a storm! This proves that there isn't a default answer i guess.

First of 3 gigs for the weekend last night. Pub gig and used my compressor (which is another story altogether see the effects threads). Place soon warmed up - lots of dancing and frivolity. Some nice compliments about sound, 3 encores and plenty more bookings at the venue. Tonight is a private party, Sunday is a festival. £500 for the weekend doing what i love. WIN.

Just wanted to share the following. I used the EBS compressor in my send and return last night at a gig. I've been fiddling at home so i am comfortable with the settings but wanted to see how this worked with the rest of the band. Well. it was a revelation. I'm embarrassed that i've not been using this effects unit. 3 different people approached me after the gig to compliment the bass playing! I was chuffed to bits. The sound was much more focused and punchy. Sat in the mix better and felt like i had more control (unconsciously i've been doing the work of a compressor with my palm/fingers). Not having to worry about that and concentrate on playing left more room to be a touch more expressive with note choice so was able to add a few more "tasty" lines into the playing. Feel a fool as i've a lot of experience and this seems like such a quick win that its ridiculous. Lesson learned. Never too late to experiment.
Try and loan parametric EQ if you can. I would suggest to cut below 40 Hz, a small boost at 80-90 Hz, small cut at around 190-195 Hz. A lot of the Fender character is in the 1kHz range so try a boost there. That is generally what I do. In my experience single coils need careful eq-ing around the 100Hz mark as that is where most JB fundamentals lie, depending on setup boosting or cutting just below and above yields good results. Perhaps you can also try cut 80Hz and Boost 140 Hz instead of the above. Probably not as good as above, but a lot depends on your specific bass too. Your attack will lie around the 700-1000 Hz and deep bottom at around 50-80 Hz. Get these right and you should be golden.
Useful info. Will have a play tonight, thanks.

I'm a bit mystified as to how the drummers inadequacies were only evident at a rehearsal and not when you saw the band and liked them. Equally, them struggling to remember their own compositions is a worry . Rehearsals can be frustrating as peeps tend to have a different idea about what "learning a song" actually means. In this case, probably best to smile your way through it and chalk it down to experience.

Don't think i need to get anything else. This Cubase Elements is absolutely amazing! Haven't missed anything at all yet from "full" Cubase. Love the interface - really easy to get around. Its slick and fast. Happy days

After install everything seems operational on the poop deck. Like the interface - found USB interface immediately - no detectable latency - 10 out of 10 so far...
