Ah, I was looking at that one. Great bass for double the £360 it went for.
You're bang on. It looks a beautiful bass. I had £400 typed into the little box on Ebay - 14 seconds left i pressed "Buy" only to be greeted by the Ebay login screen. I hadn't logged in and by the time i did it had gone . Gutted. The colour was stunning. The whole thing looked in pretty good nick. £360 is about the going rate for one of these over here which i find incredible so i always take a punt if one comes up. If the owner is reading this and wants to show off "Fill your boots" and can i come round and have a go?

Anyone tried a 5string and not like them? And why?
I think it depends on what you play and how you play... Rocking out root notes then why bother? For most other types of music, reading, improvising etc then there definitely is a reason to bother as it gives you more options and more ways to express ones self musically. Playing a 4 string feels like (what I imagine) being in a straight jacket is.
I respectfully disagree. Most of the "classic" tunes that are famous on bass (not many i know) were done on a 4 string. -
Good advice. Excercise away from playing has helped me (and getting better straps). Cycline and a few weights has been good. Pilates - excellent and helps develop your core Good luck

Yeah go for it - why not? Outboard i have tried most of the posher stuff and would recommend the Sadowsky. Built like a tank and it will last you forever. Onboard there are solutions that don't involve soldering. Just add a new control plate to the bass with all the stuff built in and solderless connections. Audere do a good one as do John East. Good luck
I think the problem is that people now simply place less value on recorded music then they used to.
True that. But so they should. You did used to get a huge chunk of plastic, 12 inch square full colour printed covers and inserts, photos etc. The album was a real tangible product and you played it on a really expensive stereo. The whole process was different. Now you download a series of 0's and 1's with a filename.
Just had a run through this thread over a coffee and I fell into the same trap, starting with short sentence on opinion followed by 'I use...' list of basses owned. Oh, how we like to type the names on our basses! Isn't multiple basses a modern thing? Years ago bass players would have but one, it would end up looking very tatty due to the songs it had delivered and practice endured. Nowadays, with the relative cost much lower, we are strangely more precious about our basses but are able to have more of them. My conjecture is that we are merely more materialistic than before. In over 30 years of playing I have had one bass at a time apart from the last 3-4 years and now I have 5. What changed?
Your experience mirrors my own. Whats changed? Disposable income and Basschat.

Just a little bit of nostalgie to remind us all of how those highly paid execs exerted quality control back in the day... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dldJCeZjcBo

There was a lovely cream Hamer Cruise bass on Ebay, Monday night. Did you win it? If so how is it as it looked beautiful. Thanks Jerry
Fact is, it was easier to break a band when there were fewer 'channels'. Fewer numbers of deals to strike, less dicking around with amateur pundits and know-alls. It was far more expedient that power be in the hands of few. And a bit of quality control ensured that most of the crap would never reach an audience's ears. As it is, the talentless hordes are smothering the worthy few.
Way i see it is that now I can choose what to listen to its not down to a few execs or a Radio 1 DJ. The explosion of channels is a good thing. Yes, there is a lot of rubbish around - but there always was. At least now i can choose if something is rubbish or not and not have that decision made for me.
Stick it up your 'arris record companies - karma is a great thing.
Yes, nice. The music industry was a very closed shop - a plaything for the few huge labels that could make or break artists. Thankfully the landscape has changed and power has returned in some ways to the artist. There is a massive variety of music available now that i would never had heard of in the 70s and 80s as there was no way to access it.

Nobody really does it. I don't even plug my bass in until gig time. We have an initial setup sound then tweak according to the room and the number of absorbers, i mean people. Of course, if using FOH we do.
All this talk of making a living from being in an originals band makes me laugh. It is and always has been extremely difficult to make a living from writing, recording and performing music. A very small percentage of those who embark down that road succeed. This is no different today than it has always been. Many artists back in the day maintained other full time employment after signing possibly lucrative recording contracts. Things are little different today. It's not the illegal distribution that is preventing artists from making a living from music. It's probably more to do with the poor marketing behind the music. To get a hit takes pots of cash in marketing. Many artists don't have that support. This is no different now than it was back in the day. Our record company spent next to nothing on promotion. We were lucky: John Peel liked us. Some radiojocks in Spain,Italy and Greece liked us. We have never been in a position to give up our day jobs. We're recording our 7th studio album at the moment. Even if this was to 'do an Elbow' and go platinum, I think only one or two of us would give up our day jobs - I don't think I would. To earn a living from original material is an unrealistic expectation.
Great post and also sums up my experience. There is no connection between how professional a musician is and/or if they are full-time or part time. Thats plain ridiculous.

If i was popular enough to have stuff stolen/downloaded/pirated i wouldn't care.

Strange band situation not sure how to react
BottomE replied to Chrismanbass's topic in General Discussion
I think the fact that they don't know when they are gigging and then when they get a gig it is cancelled due to bad organisation from other band members would tell me all i need to know. -
i was gonna join paranoiachat.com but nobody posted

Cor he looks like his dad! And went to uni with my sis who met George and said was an extremely lovely chap.

I told a cracking joke last gig that was off of the Bad Jokes thread. The band wet themselves. When they asked about the source of my jocularity i told them "Basschat". This produced more laughter than the funny joke.

It was a boob fest jug watch spectacular. Hen parties competing for the craziest dance and the midnight "show the most cleavage competition". God save the Queen.

I had a couple for about a year and in truth it didn't really take long to get used to them. During the year though something wasn't right - i can't even tell you now what it was. The 5 stringers just didn't feel right to me. Kind of like a woman with an Adams Apple and big hands. -
I organised all the Yorkshire Bass bashes so would be prepared to pitch in if required?
Thats really nice of you. Don't really know where to start TBH. I think we are going to need some commitment and an idea of numbers. -
I use a pick on one song. I always look forward to it.
