I often think a lot of the general non-musician public think that what musicians do, and go through, is a lot easier and enjoyable and profitable than it actually is. Which is why I believe we musicians and our efforts are often undervalued. But does it really matter? And is it the same for everything else that is widely consumed? Sport? Food production? Pubs and restaurants? Retailing? etc ..
It depends really. Certainly lots of punters don't know about the years of sweat and toil - the late nights, the drunks, loading gear up fire escapes and the other stuff that goes with playing in a band. Does it matter? Maybe if it does matter its time to pack it in. It doesnt matter to me that punters have no idea what goes into making a good band. Last week i was playing in a castle at someones wedding. We were fed, watered and really well looked after. They wrote to us after and expressed their gratitude on top of paying us all very handsomely. I rarely get that kind of gratitude in my "normal" job.
Answer his question and tell him what your priority is or how you intend to manage any conflicts If your thoughts are not what he wants to hear at least he will know where you stand and if then excepts your position they can't hassle you about it again
^ this Don't let it become a saga of imagined exaggerations from texts and emails. Tell it like it is and everyone can move on. -

Got to say fair play to you for posting on here. Most of us realise that there are two sides to every story. I have no idea what happened - and i don't really care - but wanted to say that you have earned a bit of kudos from me for trying to put your view across. -

Thanks for the posts chaps I will be at the music shop on Saturday so will start the idea off and see what they come back with. A saturday towards the end of August start of September might be something to aim for. I'll see how they feel and post back on thread. -
The most important thing about a venue is not its stage, pa, facilities etc... But the 'Get In'.
Hehe so true!

Booking a lesson - What should I look out for?
BottomE replied to El Bajo's topic in General Discussion
A lot depends where you live, how much you are prepared to pay and what level you are at. The better you are the harder it is to find a decent teacher who is a bass player in your locality. -
Well, she says she wouldn't stand in the way of me doing what I wanted to do and told me to do the gigs. I don't take her for granted though and wouldn't want to take the mickey.
Sounds like you have a loverly lady there. Do the gig then and make sure you re-schedule something extra special with all your earnings for your good lady.
Neologism. As in being heterosexual. I'm sorry if I was unclear.
. Any word with "gism" in it has got to be good. -
If someone says something nice to you it seems only sensible to thank them - regardless of whether or not you agree with them. File under "mmm, this is delicious" and "thank you for the lovely gift, you really shouldn't have". I always thank them for the compliment and thank them for coming and say how glad I am they enjoyed the show. If it's an actual bass player you sometimes get into a chinwag about gear etc. which is always good fun. I may not be the world's best bass player (and don't suppose I ever will), but at that particular point in time I was the best bass player playing on that stage
Great post. Wise words. On the rare occassions that i am singled out for praise i thank the person sincerely and tell them that they are a most excellent judge of ability.

Strange band situation not sure how to react
BottomE replied to Chrismanbass's topic in General Discussion
Can see both sides. They are worried you aren't committed and you are worried about losing the seat. Have a drink with the other bass player and go talk to the other band members face to face as a lot can be misconstrued in an email XxX -
I mean them no harm but the bit where he says "Come on do we have any Nickleback fans in Portugal?" greeted by silence and jeers is hilarious to the point that it looks like a spoof.
2002 Portugal and it was rocks and bottles being thrown originally after just 2 songs. Tough Gig!!! photoshopped pickle=funny rocks and bottles=not funny BB
Well it was still pretty funny as a rock.
When I finally get a bass I'm happy with I plan to get some of these. I have used hi's for a while now but I think lo's will give me what I'm after. In regards to quality, you can not go wrong with DR strings.
Hmm, got a set last week that were a bit dodgy. The E string was uneven and had extra winding in two places. I've used DRs exclusively for 2 years now - mostly they are great. Don't know about the low riders as i always use the High Beams which seem to last me about 6 months and i play a lot. That said, i hate em when they are new and it takes about 2 weeks to get them how i like em.
Pedant warning... According to postcode district maps Dorset is officially south west :-) It's a huge area though, and I understand what you mean. I organised a south west bash couple of years ago, but ended up calling it Dorset bass bash as Devon and Cornwall found it too far! BottomE, if you're up for getting more details on costs, availability, etc I'm happy to help with organising.
Good for you. The venue should be excellent. It has a recording studio and 6 fully equipped rehearsal rooms, free parking and on-site catering. Its on a very small industrial estate close to lots of shops. Next door is a huge music shop with many beautiful basses to satisfy GAS. I don't know what you think about timing. The first question is finding a date. Summer would be cool. What about a date in late July? Costs - i would look to get the rooms for free (can but ask). Refreshments would be cheap - tea coffee etc. Events - during the day it would be nice to have a couple of workshops running though i have no idea what? Not thinking transcendental meditation but something bass/music related of course. Band - i could organise some drummers/keys/guitarists to come down to be a sort of house band to play along with. Dancing Girls? Let me know your thoughts. -
Ditto that. They pop up all the time for far less than your budget. Cheap, reliable and sound decent.
Yeah good call. Great little workhorse in your price range.

Incredible. It was at a castle in Lulworth. The castle was set in the most beautiful surroundings and there were all kinds of wildlife running around. I got chased by what i told the band was a Phoenix, but was in fact a Peacock. It flared its wings, hissed like a mutha and started running at me . I've seen some scary birds in my time but hey. The stage was fantastic, the lights were too - an enormous rig and a lighting engineer! During the break there was a 7 minute non-stop firework display. The last set was full of pissed bridesmaids showing too much leg and to cap it all off we were paid handsomely. .

'hot deals' section along with the 'eBay' one? Please vote!
BottomE replied to Noisyjon's topic in General Discussion
Good idea maybe. I voted yes but with some reservations. I really like buying off of or selling to bass players (most of the time). The moment i start dealing with a business the whole thing feels different. And you have to be careful. Stringsdirect came out with a great offer the other week. If i purchased in a certain time period i would be able to buy from them at £3 a packet more than i can buy in a local shop If it were to happen i'd prefer it to be a part of the for sale section and not have any prominent positioning. -
