1. There is a great place in Bournemouth which would be ideal for a bash. Its a rehearsal rooms, very nice and fully equipped. Its also next door to a huge music shop with some great basses. All refreshments on site. I think we need a minimum of about 20 guaranteed from Basschat to make it interesting for them.
2.
If it is the case, I'll just have to hold my hands up and apologise profusely from the grovelling position!
"ooh the grovelling position" in a Charles Hawtrey style voice
3. After a brief start into guitar i soon realised that the thrusting and histrionics weren't for me so i tried bass and never looked back. That was about 1978/1979 something like that. Bass Idols: Marcus Miller Rocco (Tower of Power) Willie Week(e)s Ron Carter Anyone who plays a tasty line that suits the composition.
4. Nice post. Summer of 78 i got my first real 6 string! Hey, aint that a line to a song? It was a Gherson SG copy and played ok. I remember my mum telling me to go out and play in the sun as the weather was good but all i wanted to do was try and shred.
5. Bubs has got a point. At least this lot are gigging and the bass player may well be a member of our community. We could start a million threads about bands on YouTube. I am guessing it was originally posted because the initial post features a spectacular murder of a classic bassline? I have an opinion about this band which i will keep to myself. The guys bass looks quite tasty actually.
6. 1:52am - finished a gig - come home - read all this thread - listened to all the videos
7.
You get around this problem by being the songwriter (not just the bassist). That way you get to tell the guitarist(s) what to play.
I like the cut of your Jib young man
8. If it works it works - plain and simple. Writing a great simple line that doesn't sound "done to death" is pretty hard though. Sometimes one note says more than a thousand. Its all subjective anyway. Most of the basslines that i have had recorded and really liked have been shelved for lines that i didn't particularly like but apparently suit the song better Its someone elses song so its up to them. In retrospect, they were right
9. Dan, i went onto Facebook from your link but couldn't work out how to vote but good luck to you.
10. A lot of the the time a groove can be really improved/changed by paying careful attention to the length of the note that you play. Its amazing how effective this can be and its not often talked about - least on here anyway. Try playing the same line but varying the length of the notes in certain parts and get ready to be amazed at how much of a difference this can make. This is one of many ways (and an easy one) to improve your connection to the rhythm.
11. Its all true ^ but there is a limit to how quiet. Some places book a band then complain that its too noisy. The person booking has to be realistic about what booking a band means in terms of volume levels.
12. I kept an eye on this thread being the proud owner of a Hamer Cruise. It astonishes me that they don't sell so easily over here. Out of all my basses it would be the first one i'd try to keep. Someone is getting an incredible deal. Its the same price as a Mexican Fender! Unbelievable.
13. Bands go along with it cos they can't get any other gigs. Thats what i am guessing otherwise why would they do it? Its self perpetuating and the promoters thrive on this.
14. I liked it on the Reggae tune. I thought that it was too bright on the bridge PuP when doing the Jaco thing and I preferred the passive sound on the slap demo too. Guys got a great accent.
15.
I've been gigging for well over 30 years now. I've never paid to play and I never will.
^ this every time. Agreeing to do this just perpetuates the whole thing. Earlier someone said "If a band can't bring in enough punters, then why would a promoter want to risk their own money?" I'd say don't book bands who aren't going to bring in punters or if you are that worried get another job.
16. what they said and welcome
17.
This Warmoth body is gonna get a Babicz chrome bridge anyway - it'll prob be better but I would've loved it to have bright nickel hardware...
I have a Babicz on one bass and a 2 - Tek original on another bass. Although it isn't quantifiable in any scientific way i would say that the 2 Tek is a better piece of kit than that Babicz. It feels higher quality - the metal is denser and the finish is lovely. 2 Teks are great bridges.
18. Regular venue but without our keys player. We played as a 4 piece which was interesting. The first set it took a while to re-groove as there was a lot more space to consider. Second set i stopped thinking about it and let go and we had a blast.
19. We have one tonight. Its gonna be exactly the same just with bunting. Our drummer is the eternal optimist. If he lost his arm it would just be a flesh wound.
20.
Blimey, a South Coast collective - I'm from Southampton and live in Waterlooville. Bought my first bass in Fret about 25 years ago!
We should have a bass bash?
21. Done, good idea and good luck.
22.
Compare that to 25 years ago when I was rewinding tapes and picking notes out 1 by 1, a simple pop tune could take all night to learn.
Yeah remember those days well. It was a bugger alright. Sheet music was always really expensive too! Certainly more than a bag of Revels and definitely less tempting when it was just pocket money.
