1.
Hooray! You and me both, mate.
We should form a duo
2.
That's just an experience thing though. I think the more experience you get, the less time it takes you to learn your part, or you just skim learn it to get it to rehearsal level. So then you don't feel you have invested hours in a song and don't want to bin it.
Actually, i am the opposite. I make a lot of effort to learn the original as accurately as i can before the rehearsal. Depending on the song this can take minutes or hours. Last thing i want to hear or be guilty of is running up and down the fretboard looking for the proper note during a rehearsal. Rehearsal time is to put all the component parts together - not to learn the tune. This obviously puts me at odds with most musos doing covers that i have met edit for spelling like a school teacher
3. Hi and welcome. Often going up to Southampton from Bournemouth. Glad to see Fret Music are still going! Have you been down to Aboslute Music in Bournemouth? They are opening a new superstore and plan to have lots of lovely basses. The superstore is being built right now and is about 2 miles from my house . C u around.
4. Hi Johnny - what you trying to say?

6.
of course it's funny...spesh when you type asschat. oh, the hours fly by !
7. My lot wet themselves when i mentioned it by name.
8.
Agree, in my covers band, if we try a new song, we`ve either nailed it after two goes through, or by then we know we`ll never get it, so don`t persist.
Very wise words. There is an expectation that everyone has learnt their part but if they have and it just don't work - move on.
9. Got excited until i realised that with the 10% discount offer they are still £3 per pack more than what i pay locally
10.
You know something, the older I get the more I see that as an admirable quality, that every band needs someone like that.
Indeed. Much rather play with others on merit.
11. Hi and congratulations. Lifelong journey just started on a "proper" instrument ;-) On Basschat there are some excellent lessons in the Theory and Techniques section. Get some books. You said you are near Absolute Music? Are you another soft southerner like me?
12. I play for other people quite a bit and the they always choose the bass track i don't like but i respect their choice as it is normally their song.
13. Tough one. Understand why you are pissed after putting the work in BUT this is the music business and normal rules don't apply. Try and communicate a bit more because it seems that there is a lot of misunderstanding going on that could be solved by chatting.
14. I use Abersold backing tracks. Shifting the whole stereo track one way will remove the original bassline. If you have a DAW, something like Logic, Pro Tools or Cubase you can record right alongside the original. Great stuff. Combine that with Real Books and you have a lifetime of playing and learning. Real Books also do Bass versions where the melodies are written in Bass Clef. Good luck
15. Best way to get things moving is book a gig. Doesn't have to be anything big but tap up some contacts and set a date about 3 months away. Its the best way of sorting out any potential "issues" with band members.
16. Theres a neat little feature on my Audere preamp that runs a test each time you plug a jack lead into the input. A very sexy blue light on the control plate flashes in special sequences to provide an estimate of how strong the battery signal is. I try and find little batteries - did you realise that there is actually quite a noticeable size difference in the same type of battery? I have to jam mine into a small cavity (Carry On moment) that is already full of preamp - so i go for the smallest i can find.
17. I've stopped bringing basses to gigs as i realised that there will be less chance of anything going wrong with them. I just hum the bassline into a mic.
18. Are they still available - confused of Bournemouth
19.
Thanks people, after a bit of fiddling about (oops now the g strings deafening) its ok, got a steady volume over 4 strings on both pickups
= result
20.
Ive got a limiter/enhancer pedal , maybe that'll help?
It should do though you want to get to the source of the problem if you can. When i played with just the bridge pickup the problem went away so i am pretty sure that it is the height of the neck pickup.
21. Guitarist starts the first tune of the set. We're all looking at each other thinking this sounds odd but not terrible just strange. 4 bars later the rest of the band come in to find that the guitarists tuner had been calibrated out of concert
22. hi - same here mate though different bass. On mine are new high quality strings though that i have used loads on my other basses so i am going to try adjusting the pickup height. It took me about a song to remember to pluck the E more lightly during the gig. Slapping was a bugger though as we have a few covers requiring slapping. I don't use a compressor so that was a difficult nut to crack. Nobody noticed though
23.
What TV channel is this on and at what time, please?
Special invitation only Last nights gig was in a stunning setting. A wedding in the Purbeck Hills of Dorset very close to a little town called Bridport. I stopped en route to the gig a couple of times as the views were so amazing. On arrival we had drinks and food ready - the hosts were fantastic. We started the first dance tune on a nod from the best man but the bride was nowhere to be seen. We just kept playing until she turned up. The first set was going well until the bacon butties were served and the weather was so lovely that it was hard to get people to stay in the barn to listen to the music. Second set was a different story as we cranked up the disco burners and got the dance floor filled. 3 encores at the end and dished out a load of cards. Knackered but job done
24.
Just wondering what other people practice routine is. I try and do an hour a day. 15 minutes is playing on my iPad fret finder game so I can get quicker at my fret board notes. Then a do 45 mins playing practice. I do my major and minor scales and pentatonic scales. Then I play some songs. My current favourites are teenage kicks, let it be, sunshine of your love and the main bit of Money. I am so very much a beginner but I absolutely love it
Better than me I did have a great routine including reading, scales of all kinds, chord tones, exercises on CDs from Bass tutorial books. Then GAS set in and my playing is standing still but i have loads (5) of basses. I think it was better when i had 1 bass. It goes in cycles where there'll be months where i do a lot of theory (an hour a night) and then months when i jam along to stuff or try and write a few tunes.
25.
ENE of Reading. Bass Gear is RG10 9TU to be precise...
Thanks
