This is it. Yes, I think we have become more materialistic and you can tell how much we focus on gear compared with music by the numbers of posts on the many gear related forums compared to how many music/technique related posts. I'm guilty myself of a 'New Amp Day' post. If it wasn't an age thing before I wonder if its become one. For example, my two lads, both proficient players in bands etc, will talk endlessly about players and playing. They know about gear but won't hold for long on the subject. I'm envious as I'm rather opposite. Perhaps one element is that when I was their age there weren't 50 year olds with group gear (let alone my dad!), people that age were either classical or honky-tonk. Us gear obsessed materialists were still developing.
We're just old and boring. Flashy licks and superfast playing are no longer exciting as it is for the young'uns. Also got a bit of cash now that we didn't have when younger. I had one bass for twenty odd years and wanted to sound like Marcus Miller. Now i have 8 basses and want to sound like me

Tough call. I feel sorry for the kids having two musos as parents. One is bad enough, no wonder they are "awkward". You're in a band doing it for the love - when that runs out its time to quit cos you aint got nothing else. Its not like the money is a motivating factor.

What church are you at? Doesn't sound like a lot of love and forgiveness going on.

I thank you sir for that link
Update: I went to the audition last night. From the band's setlist, I had 11 songs prepared, 4 of which I'd learned from scratch. It turned out that it was only the second time that the band in its current line up had played together. The setlist I'd been sent related to the previous band's line-up, was way out of date and was going to be completely changed anyway. We ran through 6 of the songs and it was all pretty rough and ready, unsurprisingly. The band definitely has the potential to be a decent pub/club band. I'm not convinced about corporate functions and weddings, but who knows. I left because they were due to see another bassist, with 4 more being seen in 3 days time. I don't think the band had painted a true picture of the current situation. Actually, I wouldn't have been put off by knowing that they'd only just got together. I needn't have prepared so many songs. Don't mind if I get asked to join. Don't mind if I don't. Steve
Hey - thats cool. Thing is we can create all kinds of scenarios in our heads about what people really mean. You just have to get out there and do your best. And have a bit of fun. Good luck.

UPDATE I want to sell the neck with the machine heads. Had some enquiries so let me know ASAP. The machine heads are the screwless closed back type and are made specifically for this type of Fender neck. I have added some photos on Photobucket of the neck and tuners. Take a look its a beauty. http://s1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/bottome/US%20Fender%20Precision%20Neck/ So the total cost £200 + delivery. Thanks Jerry

Maybe he meant playing the E on the low B of a 5 string compared to the open E on a 4 string? Just trying to rationalise a comment that is probably out of context...
I'd say from the pics that it looks fairly normal. However, that's irrelevant, so if you're not happy then send it back.
^ this. Your photos show a normal Fender to me and there are worse examples than that. Even so, if you don't feel good with it then send it back because it will bug you forever. If build quality is really important you're best off trying before buying if you have access to any decent shops. Good luck.

Quality control isn't really a strong suit for Fender. Both my US Fenders are not as well put together as a 1980s Korean Squier Precision or Hamer Cruise Bass that i own. Don't get me wrong ,the Fenders sound and look fine but the build quality just ain't all that. The neck pockets on both Fenders are more sloppy than the other 2 basses. I went to a local music store after getting a call from a friend telling me about a lovely 70s Jazz bass that they had just got in (second hand of course). Lovely looking and sounding bass but again terrible build quality. I guess i am saying that Fender are famous for not having very good build quality but producing great sounding and looking products. Thats my experience anyway.

Originally bought last year from Keith... http://basschat.co.u...__fromsearch__1 This lovely rosewood neck came off of a 2008 Precision that Keith was customising. I have used it sparingly on a P Bass build but need to fund some more projects so here it is for sale. Here is a pic of the neck attached to my project bass. I can take a pic of it detached it neccessary - let me know. I am looking for £140 for the neck on its own or £200 with the closed back tuners that were imported from the US. Everything has genuine Fender logos and serial numbers. Delivery will probably be £8-10 insured. Thanks Jerry
What about another bass player?
Depends on who it was and if they seemed "responsible". I am getting old...
But gear sharing is another "hot tattie" topic altogether.
Oooh - err don't go there! There is no way another musician is going anywhere near my bass gear.

I like my gear and will always look after it as best i can. It earns me decent money and i spend decent money on it so i want to look after it.

Superb transaction from start to finish. Item is better than described Steve was great to deal with and as good as his word. The packaging was outrageously good and the bass could have withstood a tank rolling over it. I would deal with Steve again at the drop of a hat. Jerry
I just sold some bits and now have a little cash in my wallet, now I have seen these amps and there is a burning in my pocket, should I do this? or the other option is to give the cash to Mrs Merlin???
The only difference between the Squier and Fender stuff is the quality of the bits and the QC. As its a bitsa we can ignore the QC, its probably better than any of them because you're not checking like 50 a day! The bits are all Fender, so only the body is Squier is that right? I'd stick it in the local Music shop and ask them to sell it for you. If they spot that its a Squier body on a genuine Fender neck I will be amazed! plus, then the only time someone will buy it is if they have tried it and they are happy to part with the money. This is an entirely different scenario to getting a noname Chinese made bass and sticking a Fender decal on it!! At worst this is a genuine Fender with a replacement body (licensed by Fender) if I understand correctly...
You just got the job as my PR man if i ever need one. I like your angle on it. Yeah, i was pretty anal about the QC - especially setting up the neck "just so" - the intonation is sweet and the action very fast (if that makes sense). They are stock US Precision PuPs - it really sounds like a P-Bass! That said, i couldn't put it up in the local shop. I learnt a lot from this build and will use that knowledge in the next monster P-Bass build
I haven't seen the Talkbass test. Please don't hurt my feelings after spending a lot of dosh for my Overwater when a block of wood with a neck would have done same job. Its still a very nice looker. Cheers Dave
Thanks Dave. The Talkbass thread is exactly that. A guy takes a block of wood - and he went out of his way to get the cheapest nastiest old block of wood that he could find. He then adds the neck, bridge, PuPs etc. So essentially it is a Jazz bass (or was it a Precision) but without the "proper" body. He then records the bass under very strict conditions. He puts the mp3 up online and challenges people to see if they can tell the difference between the block bass and a real bass that he had recorded at the same time. Don't just believe me - go have a listen if you can find it - its impossbile to tell them apart. It was after seeing and hearing that when i decided to use a Squier body. The only reason i'll pull it apart and split is that i have grown quite interested in BITSAs and bought a really old Squier (80s) that i prefer the look of (i am old school) and want to pimp that one too. Its mildly addictive. I want to put in some of the vintage wiring in on my next build. Anyways, thanks for the interest. I mean look at this bad boy...
I like it. Again i would probably prefer to try first. I would only buy from someone i had 100% confidence and trust when its a project bass. Must admit though i do like this. Dave
Thanks. It is an attention grabber thats for sure. I really want someone to try it as i am sure that it would sell it. After all, its an Amercian Precision except the body - anyone who has seen the test on Talkbass with the block of $1 wood with a neck stuck on knows that the sound is in the electrics. All the important bits are high quality.

Is being in a full-time band compatible with family life?
BottomE replied to Roland Rock's topic in General Discussion
My dads done it for years - i mean like 30 years and him and mum seem sorted. The flipside is they start getting crazy if they spend too much time together. You have to have an understanding family and love doing your music more than watching your kids grow up. Personally, its not worth it to me. Being around the kids and watching them grow is much more important to me than anything else.
