1. Hello I would like some Fender machine heads and standard Fender P Bass PuPs. Can anyone recommend a reliable supplier? Thanks Jerry
  2. Just bought a Squire P Bass to pimp from Mel. Great communication and did exatly what she said she was going to do. Packed well and arrived on time. Do not hesitate to do business with Mel.
  3. In some other threads i have seen a lot of love for Wizard pickups. Being in the same boat as you i am watching this thread but think i am gonna go stock Fender as i want the bass to sound like a Fender Precision. I am figuring that Fender pickups will give the most authentic Fender sound with other brands being a variation of the stock sound?
  4. What a gig! Enjoy. Having seen both Dennis Rollins and Pee Wee its sure to be great. I hope you need your electric.
  5. I've seen that many guitars/basses "fall over" in soft cases that even though they might be well padded i like the security of a hard one
  6. +1 to the thumbers. I do it too though don't really know how it crept in. But yes, lovely warm sound for some slower numbers. Also used it for a couple of funk tracks muting with the palm.

Just bought a neck from Keith. Very easy transaction - packed nicely - completely as described and delivered on time. Highly recommended.
  8. Some good suggestions. I recently lowered the neck PuP on a jazz bass and even though the adjustment was minimal the difference was quite pronounced. It led to a more even distribution of output which led to more comfort when playing. Took 1 minute to achieve!
  9. I use keys but sometimes guitar. You are right i think when you say that its easier to compose on chordal instruments. Added benefit is you get to think about the chord tones before you construct your bassline. You should pick up guitar pretty quickly if you have been playing bass for a while but don't get stuck on the dark side for too long
  10.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Every originals band that is serious about it needs a manager and a producer, AND needs to listen to them. There's a lot of misguided talent out there, it's a shame.
There are also an equal number of managers and producers who you can end up wasting time and money with. I find myself agreeing with Nigel in that life and time is short. Kick out the slackers and move on. One door closes and another opens and all that...
  11.
I was at a gig on Friday night and also found it very hard to distinguish between the instruments that the bass players from the three different bands were using. I certainly wouldn't have known which was which in a 'blind' test. Bear in mind that this was at one of the best venues in the city, with a very good sound system. Bass 1: Alembic Orion 6 string Bass 2: some old 60s Hofner thing (not the typical McCartney violin bass) Bass 3: Warwick Stuart Zender signature (played by Mr Zender himself)
Strange innit? You can't say any of those basses are similar in design. Makes you think.
  12. My dad wanted someone to jam along with back in 78...
  13. No - not tried that at all. Interested to see how this thread develops though like you, I prefer the LM head to the RH and think it sounds wonderful with the TC cabs.
  14.
Actually, thinking about it, the reality here is this debate is more about build quality and feel, and less about tone. Tone can be altered by amps/cabs/ the player/active electronics/pedals/the list is endless..... I do know that if I get GAS and go shopping I generally exclude a bass by its feel, weight and balance way before I think of plugging it in or looking at the price ticket. I've been through quite a few basses (not as many as a few here though!), and have been drawn to things by their "feel" which I would never have picked up by just looking at or hearing someone else play. on the flipside I picked up and tried out a lakland at the Mansons guitar show a few years back, and its setup felt horrible and unbalanced. I recently got a bad case of GAS, reluctantly tried a 55-02 again, and I now own two of them...
Yes, i think that there lies the difference. I think the point of the post was that heres all us blabbering on about tone and a specific sound when in a band situation using the same backline and PA a lot of basses will sound very similar. I think the other point was that most people watching us play are non musos so this distinction is probably lost on them. It just got me wondering about the pointlessness of GAS and the search for a sound. Agreed, that if you do mainly studio work or playing solo bass pieces then i can see why the tone is very important. But if you are mainly playing in a band and can get a decent Squier or similar then why not?
  15.
Regarding them sounding the same live, that doesn't surprise me too much with all the other racket going on at an indie gig!! Not really the place for fair comparison!!
What indie gig are you referring to?
  16.
I used to have a Wal and a Squier P. They were so difficult to tell apart that I had to get John Giblin to Autograph the more expensive intrument. Whenever I needed to identify one from the other it was then easy... The writing is on the Wal.
nice - very clever
I think you are being snobish calling a Squier P bass"el crappo" We cant all afford to throw several thousand on boutique basses.
Agreed.
  17. All power to you. Just keep at it. The note trainer is ok for learning notes on the stave. I think in a way you are probably held back by already having a fair musical palette to play with. It can seem tedious working out notes on a sheet of music when you know you can do it by ear more quickly.
  18.
And another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvYnOD58BY0
One day...
  19.
Quick question for everyone: what sort of difference is there between the 210 and the 212? Would it be best to have a matching pair or one of each? Cheers!
I (like Steve Bailey and other TC users ) use a 210 and 212. Bloody magic. Wonderfully clear sounding (and light) cabs. There doesn't seem to be any colouration of tone which means itll show your basses characteristics nicely
  20.
also id like to add how interesting it is how little credit you guys give the punters im shore most of them can hear the difference between a good and bad bass tone even if its at a sub-conches level that dictates whether or not they dance or walk away because "this band is sh*t"
I think though that if a bass player is struggling to hear the sound difference between 2 basses then a punter will too - thats if they are interested. After all a bass player is a punter when he is not playing.
  21.
Doh! Just spotted a really tidy Squier Precision on the 'bay for £70 Buy It Now. Too much to resist. Hit the button. Bloody GAS...
Did the same thing last week and picked one up that has been modded with MIM and US bits for £80. Got to be worth a punt.
It's either a good sound or a bad sound, regardless of what gear you're using.
Yep - very true. Both basses sounded great. It certainly didn't seem like there was £2.5k worth of aural difference.
  22.
What amp was it? Some amps sound the same whatever bass is out through them, if it was an Ashdown or cheap Marshall or the like you could play any two basses through it and they'd sound the same IME. Stick them through a decent amp, especially something transparent like a GB or an Eden and I'm sure they'll sound very different.
aha - thats a good question. I didn't look (i will next time) but believe it was from the TC Electronic BH range.
  23.
The Squire could easily have sounded better but how many people would tell the difference while getting their ears battered by a band and a house PA system? I wouldn’t judge the ultimate quality of basses based on a “weekend warrior” thrash in a pub.
Again, it was low volume - all musos were pros or at least semi pro and there was no thrashing. I understand your defensiveness as you are a Wal owner but don't think your condescending tone (the bit in apostrophes) is adding anything to this thread.
  24. It wasn't an indie night. It was more of a jazz/funk/fusion thing with no slapping on view . Not high volume and a nice mix. I am just saying that given the price difference between the basses it was a surprise that there wasn't a wow factor when the Wal was being used. Absolutely take on board the build quality, playability etc
  25. I was at a gig the other night and there were two (very good) bands. One guy has a beautiful Wal bass and the other has a Squier Precision. They both play through the same amp and have a touch of front of house as its a pretty small venue. I was really surprised to discover that there was very little difference in the sound from both basses. Ok, i understand all the mitigating circumstances but really! Whats the price difference between the two? I know the chap with the Precision paid around £100 of of the Ebay. It got me thinking about all this GAS and the search for a sound. Given i am a bass player (allegedly) I am probably more interested in the qualities of the basses. I am sure that the punters though would not have made any distinction.
