When I bought a squier affinity p bass a few months back, I thought the first job would be to change the neck but I quickly realised there was no need. The neck was good as was the fretwork. I didn't like the diddly little tuners though, so they were changed for proper Fender ones. The electrics were the weak point and I therefore replaced the lot.
The chap i got this from said that it had CTS pots and wiring. I tried to hide my ignorance and said "ah excellent" but he may as well have been speaking in Swahili. Is this a good thing?
If the worst thing about it is the body why would you keep it and change the pickups and neck?
It's cos i have sourced a nice US neck and PuPs from a pretty newish precision. The PuPs i hoped would give an even better sound and the neck would give me a nicer neck. I already have some people interested in buying the neck and PuPs. I think a nice pickguard would make the body more pleasing to the eye but there is a big chip in the horn that goes to through to the wood. I am debating now if it is worth stripping the paint and doing a custom paint job?

Would you bother changing the neck?

Did anyone else make it to see Prince last night?

No - wish i had though -
What a surprise. I won a Squier Precision off of Ebay - £80. I bought it really as a project bass to practice setups - soldering and modding. Anyway i plugged this sucker into CUBASE last night and what a surprise. Plays really well - nice action with very little fret buzz. The MIM PuPs that have been installed give a nice thump - not much range in tone but what is there is quite useable. Haven't found any dead spots and the neck is straight and true. The worst bit about it is the body I want to play it through an amp before deciding what to do and was gonna buy a US neck and PuPs - will they make a big difference given that it is a Squier body or is it a waste of time?

What a varied weekend. First gig on Friday was through a massive rig at an extremely posh private school. Leavers ball, about 500 people - parents, kids and teachers. It went brilliantly and was capped when a young man said "what a bloody marvellous genre of music you chaps play. What is it?" Second gig was at a village hall. Amazing family get together where everyone was in the mood to party. Third gig was at a local festival - again through a decent rig. Great reception and encore - unknown for a 4pm set apparently. Best of all my kids were able to come and watch which is a bit of a treat for me. Good times.

Nice playing - good feel and technique. Ok, so the tunes not one thats gonna live long in the memory but hats off to the guy who i am sure has some most excellent chops but was more concerned with being sympathetic to the song. Nice bass (except the white pickguard) - love the blocks. -
Just got in from a cracking gig and we played a couple of new tunes. Dilema for new songs is where to put them as you don't know how well they will go down.
In my band we always seem to disagree on the set order. It p###es me right off cos I'll write a set list out trying to build up to a cresceno at the end of both halves. Then someone always comes out with "I don't like that song too early in the set" or "why not just swap these 20 songs around a bit" and I end up having to write it all out again. When someone else gets of their arse to write a set list it always seems to make no sense to me with it being up and down all over the shop. Does anyone have a formula or a theory for how to put your set together? If so it'll help me put a set together then be able to explain to the rest of the band why it should stay that way. We play classic rock cheese btw
+1 happens just like you said. I stay well out of it
I went to see Booker T Jones last night. Not with the MG's but the band were impressive. Bassist Jeremy Curtis had some big shoes to fill and did so very well with a nice Precision/Ampeg set up. A really enjoyable gig, my personal highlight being the 7 minute version of Time Is Tight that closed the show. Not far behind was the following introduction... "This is a song we recorded in 1962 when I was 17 and a senior in high school. It's called Green Onions" I know what I was writing as a 17 year old and it wasn't Green Onions! Oh yeah.... They managed to slip a couple of verses of Mustang Sally into Chain Of Fools
Nice - i been re-digging some Booker T recently. You lucky bugger.
What an amazing track. Perfect example of how a relatively simple bass line can sound fantastic in the hands of a great groove player.
Oh yeah - lovely

Got news from the seller and all things being equal i can let you know abou the bits on Sundayish.
Mystified by John Entwistle at No 1. Obviously a great band, obviously a steam train of a player, but compared to the soul greats... it just doesn't stack up. Mind you the Ox topped Guitar & Bass's best bassist poll of a few years ago, and that was a readers' postal vote.
The poll probably tells you more about the demographic of readership than anything else.

I am struggling a bit with the all of those bassists in front of Jaco #7. Its a rock mag so i guess thats how it is in that world. Opinions as you say...
And the public know any of those songs?? :-P Si
I am guessing that whoever booked the band have seen them before? (but £50 ??? for 7 hours) -
Sounds like you've already virtually recouped your outlay. Just hope the deal goes through OK and the unresponsive seller does actually exist. Let's not go there.
Yes, lets hope so. I sent them another message today. Perhaps its someone who works away or something like that. I have been pretty lucky on ebay so far but am wary after hearing all the horror stories.
I'd be interested in the pickups if you're swapping them out for USA.
Sure, apparently the PuPs are from a Mexican Precision but at the moment the seller hasn't got in contact with me

Bienvenue mon ami. Je suis un anglais mais j'aime bien La France. Vive La Republique!

Daphne blue - get you

Sure. I am waiting for the seller to respond. Not got anything back from them at the moment but when i pick it up i'll check it out. If its in good nick i'll give you a shout.

I am a recent convert. There was a definite "pain"period where i struggled with getting the accuracy of left hand on the fretboard. Thats diminishing now and actually the discipline needed on the fretless is starting to pay off on the fretted. And ooh slidy notes and chords sound great.

Frankie Valli meets The Commodores. Its so camp and funky - especially the breakdown at 2:20 ish where you can really hear deep thundering bass.
Even if you do need to drag your bridge closer to the neck, the bridge will cover the existing holes (if you don't fill them before a respray/polish etc) anyway
Apologies for hijacking this thread but do you know if a US precision neck (2008) will fit a Squire body (90s) or are there loads of possible combinations?

Looks like Sid is going for another "Greatest Rock N Roll Swindle" ba boom (roll on snare and cymbal crash)
