1. Aw i can't choose a favourite just some that i really like. Depends on mood. These names could be switched around for others on a different day. Jazz - Sarah Vaughn Blues - BB King Funk - Chaka Khan Soul - Aretha Franklin Motown - Mary Wells
2. Nice observation. In the 80s i had probably a max of 300 Watts and that was considered "beefy". It was always cranked up though. These days i get 550 Watts and play about mid way on the gain. Good to know theres more if needed.
3. I could never afford decent basses as a pro musician. It was only when i got a job in the "real world" that i had the cash to spend on good quality instruments. My view is that get what you want - you're a long time dead. Punters haven't a clue - often the audible difference you may enjoy on a better instrument is completely lost at a gig.
4. Yeah my dad was a pro piano player/singer from the 60s up to 2013 when he died. My brother is a drummer. About 25 years ago we all went as a 3 piece on a gig out in Dubai for 6 months. He just had loads of material - all kinds of different stuff but mainly blues and jazz. Did loads of gigs with him over the years. Often at short notice - like an hour! He'd turn up outside wherever i was living, load my stuff and we'd head off to a gig.
5.
This gives you a limited idea of what there songs are about. its an insight to there profound genius, thoughts and lyrics. You might have to know your Steely Dan to recognise some of the terms. http://www.steelydandictionary.com
Thanks Bubs - wiled away a bit of time looking at that site. It shined a light on some things - other references leave me even more confused .The songs are so good and the odd references and obscure lyrics somehow make them even better.
6. Can't go wrong with Steely Dan. Definitely would have a couple of albums on my desert island. Fagens Nightfly will always be a fav. One thing though is that i've no idea what most of Steely Dans songs are about - not that it makes them any less enjoyable.
7.
My guitarist mentality states that more is better - therefore, when I started to learn bass I was keen to use as many fingers as I could on my right hand,
Once you drop the guitarist mindset it should become clearer. Bass is a supporting instrument - no need to thrust - put foot on monitor and drown everyone out. Sit back and enjoy the groove. Most of the bass playing gods managed to sound fantastic using 2 fingers - i wouldn't worry about that really. The position of your fretting hand is probably more important than the number of digits used. Yamaha BB range are nice basses.
8.
He's not exaggerating. I was there! :-) After you left Kev, there were 3 guitarist up widdling all over each other. So to speakl. Wot with them and the saxes, it was a real clash of the tit[s]an[/s]s.
fixed
9.
That's seems overly cruel to me... surely it would be kindest to suffocate them with a carrier bag then fling them into a swamp?
You forgot to attach large rocks to the aforementioned target! We'd a keys player for a while who was so busy with right and left hand that it was truly disturbing. No amount of polite coaxing, and we tried all manner of helpful suggestions, could alter him from his zealous hand spasms. Sacked him.
10. Once you've nailed the covers doesn't that give you time to go off and explore other avenues? If you've not got a DAW (music software on a puter) it might be worth looking at investing in one. You'll be able to create/jam/record anything you want.
11. If you go in for this style of arrangement for gigs get used to it as it goes with the turf. Best go equipped with lots of things to do. I've heard the internet is quite popular.
12.
I did one of these, the bands were done in alphabetical order, we were B.went on last as we had a left handed drummer!
hehehehe
13.
Thanks all, Pompey is about an hour and a half by car for me, Exeter is probably the same. Funnily enough I bought a '72 precision from Don Strikes in about 1985, £185, you don't get them for that price any more! Absolute music was my first thought but don't want great expense! Although I did PM the chap from Poole. Anybody been to guitar mania? Jack
Been to Guitar Mania. They are heavily biased towards the twangy side of the street so don't know about their bass "intelligence" but i believe they don't do the setup work. They give it to a guy who lives in Ashley Road, Parkstone - about 3 houses away from the shop.
14.
Just in General. I'd be out of there within 5 minutes. Sax and guitar are the main culprits for musical diarrhea in my experience. Just meant as a fun observation from a bass point of view and maybe why different characters take up different instruments. Bassists seem to be quite happy playing one or two notes in a given section whereas the above mentioned seem want to play all of the notes all of the time. That's why I love Wayne Shorter.
As i've got older even great soloing is one of those things that has become less interesting to listen to. Much more into composition, groove, songs and the "group" type elements of music making. There are players of all instruments who might be guilty of overplaying. Your list is too restrictive. Must be room for "Drummers with needless fills". Grumpy now.
15. I can advise where not to go. Please don't go to Don Strikes in Westbourne. Years ago they were excellent but have gone rapidly downhill. Also Oasis in Ringwood had a P-Bass to upgrade the PuPs - took 8 weeks even though he said it would be 2 weeks and then the job was shoddy. Two places where they have done a good job: Absolute Music - expensive but one of the chaps is a bass player and has setup a number of my basses and always done a good job Avon Road in Christchurch - can't remember the name of the chap but cheap and reliable - would have to Google it
16. Spike their drinks (for legal and health and safety reasons obviously don't do this). Depends what you mean by out of control?
17. Bernie and Nile laying down the groove. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrKjawtXY3s
18.
Here's some nice footage of him:
Great, thanks. Right at the end of Boogie Nights are loads of little melodies/hooks going on. Never realised how busy it is. Can see why Quincy Jones snapped him up.
19. Bit of a rarer one from Chaka Khan at the end of the disco era. Also another great version of this from Luther Vandross http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggQR7vRZAC0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0oaUGNUDfQ
20.
Sounds like you are talking about Rod Temperton. I can't see him on that video, unless he is lurking in the background. He is a white guy from Cleethorpes . He wrote six or seven tunes for QJ and MJ. Although he had a pretty impressive credit list with others as well. Top, top writer. https://en.m.wikiped...i/Rod_Temperton
Thats the fella. Can't remember why i think he is linked to Heatwave too. Bit of googling to do.
21. We've only just got started. How about these guys? Didn't he go on and write most of the Michael Jackson stuff with Quincy Jones? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojaFHxonofw
22.
Love all the replies - my first topic that has gone to two pages!
Appropriate thread for you given you live in "Yo" ville.
23. One of my fav genres. Bass was allowed a dominant role in the production and some great string/horn section playing. Here are a couple that i really like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KI9uJbczhiI and one of the best bass lines ever! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEtS2cRWjOk
24. Scary thread, having been in the same band for 9 years. Best way to get work is by word of mouth but if that doesn't happen its a lottery.
25. Lot of musos would do well to remember that this is the entertainment industry so act accordingly. Your stage presence is part of what you bring to offer as a bass player. It should be sympathetic to the genre/gig.
