Hi, another Dorset member here, Graham from Bournemouth. Am on here to eventually sell a few basses, as my collection has got a bit out of hand! Any ideas on success rates? Cheers, Graham
Hi - i am another Bournemouth guy. What you selling mate? I have sold thru here before and bought too.

I played it last Saturday. The original is in Ab but the guitarist wanted it in G! Love the way the mid 8 sneaks in and out again. Quite clever.
No, no peripherals yet. Things're a little tight here... I have a kid who plays string-harp and I'm financing one for her; the other one plays violin, and I'm still catching up on getting us out of the red from last year. So my own little project is sort of limping along. I need the bass though, so for now I'll just pick up some bland-stock knobs at the local music store. I'll be looking for chickens though. Even local junk-shops might be a cool place to find funky ones.
What colour knobs? Now theres a question. I saw these Chicken Knobs (its not pornographic) They do red, white and black. Red on red? Could be a double denim moment.
Ah, yes the old Naval base.....very quiet there now, even the Green Shutters pub closed for a while (not sure if it's open again now?), The music scene in Weymouth and Portland is still pretty good, with a lot of accomplished musicians (my son plays guitar in a local Dorchester / Weymouth band). I never really got involved seriously with the local music scene here (not sure why really?), though I played in various bands over several years in London and Hertforshire. When I moved to the area 12 years ago, I met up with a couple of music producers (by chance) and found myself doing sessions. It was here that I met Jet Harris, and was asked to play backing guitar for him on his last (and sadly to be his final) album 'The Journey' (great times!). Jet once asked me if I would look after his basses for a while ("play 'em if you like" he said, which I gladly did......sorry...tried to). Being a guitarist, I found his Fender VI a joy to play....playing full chord arpeggios in six string guitar tuning......beautiful sound!...I used to love watching him play on stage (whatever guitar he was using). I did once play 5 string bass (borrowed from the studio) at a cultural festival in Bristol with some members of the old West End show, 'Ipitombi'; It was myself on bass and Nigel Hopkins on trumpet, with loads of African drummers and dancers. We were given three tunes to learn, but they roped us into very song; All I could do (after panicing!) was play 'percussive' bass lines (thank god for that low 'B' string!)....it was a huge amount of fun! A Dorset Bass Bash! Interesting! I'd like to get involved in that (please let me know if you hear anything more about it). I would also love to pop over to you sometime for some lessons (very kind of you to offer your help..thank you!), but I should get a practice amp first. I am currently in the process of reparing an old 50 watt Vox Escort Bass amp (anyone have a 1k 5w wirewound PCB mount resistor they can spare me?) which belongs to my brother (I'm sure he would let me borrow it for a few weeks). Anyway, sorry for waffling there (very pleased to be accepted into the basschat community!). Paul
Sounds like you have had an interesting journey Paul. I didn't know Jet Harris but was friendly with Cliff Richards guitarist, a guy called Martin Jenner, who sadly passed away some time ago. He used to live in Bournemouth and play with a lot of local bands. It would be great to catch up and have a chin wag. You should post on the Items wanted part of this forum for your electrical stuff. You will be surprised at how helpful bass players are to each other. I bet someone can help you out. I am keeping an eye out for the Bass Bash thingy. I think it was planned for June in somewhere like Gillingham. I'll have a dig round on the forum later and see if i can resurrect the thread.

My brother is a great drummer. He is very fussy though - so much that he hasn't done a gig in years as he won't "lower" himself to play covers or be in what he considers to be a crap original band. He laughs at my musical prostitution and thinks i am a sell out playing each and every gig that comes my way. I guess its just two different schools of thought. He practices at home and records from his electronic kit along with cut and paste samples and makes some wonderful music that noone will ever hear.

Bank holiday weekend in bournemouth and the joint was absolutely banging. Queues to get in all night. Dancing from the off and the band was on form. We (on my prompting) tried a little audience participation song and got them to sing along quite loudly. Great fun - good gig and knackered.
-
Some of the most fun basslines are/have been in songs that i would never play at home. I would play for almost anyone anywhere if the money was right just to play with other musos/different bands and to have a different experience.
Hi there neighbour! Thank you for the welcome.... Cheers!..I may take you up on that! (I would love to be able to play slap bass). Are you a bass guitar teacher? I need to get a small practice amp first though (I tried a small Fender Rumble bass amp recently.....great little amp!). I do have a 400 watt valve bass amp at my disposal, but as I found out recently, it's not too house friendly. I'm on that large slab of rock just south of Weymouth (hence the name 'Rockape').
No worries. Nice to have a little dorset crew on the forum. I love it out your way. I used to gig on the naval base at Portland. They were pretty rowdy affairs with a hell of a lot of booze involved but we were always treated well. Lessons - i have taught a few people in the distant past - i am not a qualified teacher by any stretch of the imagination but i could certainly put a few sessions together that might help technique and avoid some of the common problems that peeps struggle with. There is/was talk about a Dorset Bass Bash. Whats that i hear you say. It was a number of people from the area hire a hall somewhere and turn up with our equipment, a picnic and spend a day trying different basses and rigs and generally having a very bassy day. Hopefully it will go ahead. all the best Jerry
Ahem... actually fickleness is not limited to the ladies... I like blue however, and this has taken long enough to cause me to lose my grip on my resolve! The gut says 'Reds', so it's reds.
Forgot to say i stumbled across your posts on Talkbass (i am not stalking you honest). Did you get the chicken heads?
..and music.
well, i left that bit out deliberately because as a piece of music it doesn't get me going.

Yeah not bad Victor always look like hes just slid out from under a car like he's been working on it and been asked to do a vid. No pretentions about dress or look its all about amazing technique and ability.

Whats the hardest bassline you've learnt and why?
BottomE replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
I think Herbie Hancock "You Bet your Love". It moves between slapping and fingering and has some interesting timing things going on. Forgot to add the why bit of the OP - cos i love the tune. -
Well yesterday I changed my mind again,
Are you sure you are not a lady
Alright now, keep yourself at bay there Grasshopper! The new thought is Blue... A white center, maybe just slightly blue-ing as you travel outward- but still white, then it gets hit with a slam of deeper, darker blue as a narrowly burst-ed edge. I'm maybe getting done with reds. My vision of it now is completely unique in my mind. Whaddya think?
I like the reds. Thinking something like a cherry burst. There is something sexy in that colour and actually saying cherry burst is quite sexy too. It might be a bit conservative but its a thought.

I'm another Bournemouth guy and would love to come see you guys play. Pls let me know when you are gigging next. Jerry
Well I'm waiting now, and I find myself, now that it's under way, thinking about it a lot. I think I'm incurring a bout of impatience... but hopefully I'll get to see it this weekend. Will post pix... it'll be completely white to start, then I have to get into color. Probably going with a white-hot-looking/yellow/gold center, bursting out to a deeper but vivid bright gold, then to a bright crimson-red edge. No wood grain. Think Danelectro, only snazzier, and on a long-scale quasi-SG bass...
ooh the boys have popped out of the barracks just thinkin about it.

Hi and welcome to Basschat and Dorset. I hope you like them both.

Good one last night. Busy pub - importantly easy to get gear inside and out and parked right outside! Tone was great although the stage area was a bit loud. We had a debut for our new lighting system which really added something to the visual side of things. Now off to take doggy for walk by the river.

Headphones - are better ones any better?
BottomE replied to niceguyhomer's topic in Accessories and Misc
Good question. I'd like to know too...
