A lot of stuff i wanted to find out about Hamer was on the Talkbass Forum. I don't mean to promote a different community - fact is that Hamer never really sold a lot of basses over here compared to the US.

We are the GoodFoot Band from the deep south. We play a bit of funk and soul - originals and sometimes covers. We've been together for nearly 4 years with same members! Some kinda record for me. Here we are at the Soul Cellar in Southampton. SLAP WARNING for those that don't like it!
Set my MB combo flat with a smidge of VLE & VLF and love it, so I can only agree it was probably the room
+1 exactly that. Best godamn amp i have ever had. And my back loves it.

The GoodFoot Band at the Soul Cellar in Southampton. We did a great gig there with a Brighton based band called Mean Pappa Lean who were most excellent. Right at the beggining there is a great comeback by a member of the audience about his job. This song started about 10bpm to fast - drummer realised and slowed it...not for long. And i screwed up the bar where i have a little bit to twiddle on 2:37 boo hoo

+ 1 to all of that. I can never set the bass tone control on the Stingray to full - its way too powerful for most styles of music and booms like crazy. I normally play with both treble and bass controls on the Stingray set to 3/4 and then do anything else on the amp - usually roll a bit of bass off. It may be worth mentioning that you might also be fighting for the same sonic space with other band members. Guitars and keys when invading the realms of the bass space will really alter how the bass is heard. Maybe worth considering this. It's worth persevering with the nuances of the StingRay as they are great sounding basses.
Yammys in my view are quality instruments. I had a BB1100s in the late 80s/early 90s. Must have done about 1000 gigs on it, with no backup, and never had any problems with it. Recorded well too.
+1 i had a BB1100s too and its the only bass that i regret selling. I am a big fan of Yamaha bass gear. I think their build quality in general is a lot better than Fender and their PuPs electronics are top notch. They really are a pleasure to record with. I am gassing for the TRB 1004 in the For Sale section as having played one recently i understand what amazing instruments these are. Personally, i am not worried about endorsements. If they don't have a "cool" or "trendy" player as a flagship for their gear so what. IMO they are well priced, great value and excellent reliable work horses.
I finally cracked Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder last night. There's talk of me starting a funk band sometime.......... D.
Great innint when you finally pull that one off (oooh er missus). Once the famous riff is nailed i found the tricky bit the last double chorus where the bass player starts doubling up and playing extra twiddly bits.

I am looking forward to getting on this. Thanks Major. -
It's been handed over to the furniture guy, and by the end of next week we'll have a bottom-coat of satin-white nitro on there. Need to get into the pick guard meanwhile, and settle on a color. That probably won't happen until I see (and get a pic of) the new white bass. I could use a little inspiration at this point... So we're actually doing this now!
Cool - looking forward to seeing it and offereing some suggestions if i may

Dads a muso so music has always been around since i can remember. He had market stalls selling records on the Portabello Road in the 60s importing blues stuff from the states. He even sold a bass cab to Lemmy! But i found a record he had when i was about 14 and played it cos i thought the name was funny. Monk doing Round Midnight - holy cow! It knocked me down - the strange chords and timing yet the hypnotically tragic melody. Kerrching. I was/am hooked.

Would you trust your bass in the hold on a plane?
BottomE replied to Clarky's topic in General Discussion
In the early 90s when i was pro - only ever used a hard case. No wrap - no lock - nothing except the hard case which must have done about 6 long haul flights with me. I didn't slacken strings or do anything. It may have been dumb but i never ever had an issue. I wasn't as precious about looking after my basses in those days as i am now. -
Don't buy till you try. Good luck.
I think a problem for most of us who are looking at going down this route for the first time is that we are scared of being a total tool when pretending to know what to look for in a double bass. That is how it is for me. I have no idea except money talks. Where i might be able to spot a deal with an electric bass i could get completely ripped off with a double bass. Then comes the trying it out part - if its not open strings i am in trouble.
You know a few months ago there was a thread about poor packaging on a bass sold on eBay (dispute two BCers - can't recall their names) I bet as a result of this sellers now use additional packaging. Hopefully as a result of this thread buyers will do a bit of research and ask fewer stupid questions!!
I was one of the parties in the Ebay dispute. I did learn a lot from that transaction.
+1. It's happened to us over the past few years and to be honest we should probably have packed it in ages ago but we are rather adept at flagellating a deceased equine. I'm in a similar boat to you in some ways, including not really knowing what to do, so all I can say is good luck!
The strange thing is is that the horse is still going with lots of um, fields to plough in the near future Crikey, forget that metaphor...

Hi, been playing for a few years now. I am getting older (43) and always had an appreciation of Jazz. I'd like a teacher to guide me into the realms of Jazz Theory and Improvisation. Willing to travel a few miles for quality lessons. Ideally once a fortnight to begin? Thanks Jerry
listen to your little voice, and do what makes you happy.
probably get arrested if i were to do that - seriously i know what you mean. that said i got home and there is an email from the guitarist expressing love for the band and saying how good it was to talk...i am a bit confused. I think i will keep an eye out for another project in case things go tits up. Thanks for your thoughts.
-
Thanks guys. We had such a rubbish gig on Saturday - i sent an email on the Sunday saying that we needed to sharpen up (myself included). I guess this may have been the thing that prompted the guitarist to say what he said yesterday. I just feel very sad about the whole thing really. I guess i didn't see it coming. I have another project on the go but it is writing and recording with no view to gigging. I am a gigging muso. Its in my blood and don't feel right unless i am part of a gigging band. Perhaps another issue is that the guitarist who negotiates most of the gigs is in a position to really affect how busy or not the band will be.
-
The band i play in has had the same lineup for about 4 years with other musos coming and going. We have done hundreds of gigs and for the most part it has been a highly pleasurable experience. This year has been a bit mixed in terms of gigs - some great and some rubbish. Last night at rehearsal the guitartist says that he is wanting to go in another direction musically - he is fed up playin the same tunes. The singer is having problems recovering her voice after gigs and might like doing less gigs. Getting this out in the open is cool - we all chatted and the plan was to try and concentrate on the posher end of the (function) market for the "dosh" and work on some new cover material. We nailed 3 new tunes last night. Me and the drummer are up for as many gigs as possible though as we are both married with kids Whilst that is all fine and amicable i wonder if it is a sympton of something else and that for this band it might be time to call it a day? I'd find leaving difficult because the band has been a part of my life for 4 years. We have a good reputation and still have a load of gigs booked for the rest of the year but sometimes its best just to do the honorable thing before things start to come apart at the seams. Like with a girlfriend and the arguments start - retrospectively you wish you'd have broken up with her sooner cos you have moved on and look back at it as time wasted. I honestly don't know what to do. Lookin for some ideas and suggestions.
Surely that's not true? As an individual private seller (i.e. not a shop/business) Distance Selling Regulations do not apply. You only have to supply an accurate description of what is being sold (i.e. Fender USA Precision Bass) It doesn't have to involve details of age/condition... It all comes down to 'Caveat Emptor/Buyer Beware'.
Unless you are on Ebay who seem to rule in favour of the seller in the majority of cases regardless

I don't understand people complaining about offers they feel are derisory. Just say "no thanks". It's like those who complain about tele programs - just switch it over.
