unless of course,as a bass player you are happy and content to never venture beyond the root.
god forbid. Not playing the root and the song still sounding cool, flowing, together and tight is such a dream. I had a moment last night doing "A Foggy Day" when i stopped even thinking about root notes and just played around in a couple of scales following the chords loosely and having a couple of target notes. I'd never experienced it before and it was sooooo lovely.
Here's Walter Becker on bass. And they're risking a tambourine too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsrI_mIT6PQ
not seen that. so is he a guitarist who plays bass or a bass player who plays guitar? does it matter?
The gist of this thread is the guitarist's 'I can play guitar, so bass will be a piece of piss' mentality.
oops

Doesn't Walter Becker play bass on some of the Steely Dan stuff and Donald Fagen solo stuff?
Why is this bass so 'crap' ? Have any of you experts actually played one?
There is a local retailer that stocks some of this brand. Not that particular model but some slightly more expensive ones and they are crap. The cheaper one that the OP has mentioned might be brilliant - but i doubt it.

I really struggle with this template approach of "How To do ...." and claims like the 10,000 hours. The rest of the article i am sure is well meant - i confess i didn't read it all but there are so many possible paths to becoming a good musician that the title is wrong at worst and misleading at best. It almost suggests that there is only one way when there are many possibilities. OK, agreed that a lot of thoughtful playing and practice is required but thats not news - or is it?
Hi im completely new here but just wanting some advice. I really want a jazz bass but being a beginner i can't afford fender i would however like a lacquered neck which the squire Vintage modified ones dont have. Thomann offers this which seems quite a reasonable price. Is it a reasonable beginners bass? Ive built guitars before so i was considering perhaps replacing the pickups and doing marcus miller esc routing and mods! Basically i want to know is it a pile of sh** or a worthy bass for modding? http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hbb1975_na.htm
Looks nice but probably is a pile of crap. I would go for a secondhand Ibanez or if you can a Yamaha in that kind of price range. I certainly wouldn't waste money modding a bass like that - it would be like putting a sports engine into a Robin Reliant. That said a lot of Fenders suffer from average build quality. Still sound great but not as well built as some other manufacturers. There is a lovely old Yamaha BB1100s being sold in the Basses for Sale section. If you can get a few more spondies together it would be a fantastic acquisition. Might not be a Jazz bass but will do a lot of tones being active and passive and built like a tank.

And shes gone straight to the top of the neck for a bit of a solo fest...not like daddy. My kids have been raised on funk. They were in a friends car. Their friends mum asked if they wanted to listen to any music. "James Brown please" she piped up. Her current fav is Herbie Hancock...
I voted 'love it',because it's a legitimate bass technique, therefor I love it in the same respect that I love playing the bass using any other technique,or playing extended range instruments,or reading,or studying,or using effects,or playing upright.......and so on.
I voted for "I think its great if used tastefully to suit a song" I love nearly all techniques apart from tapping/hammering. I feel another thread coming on...
i might just get one of those electronic things Rolf Harris used to play and a tape recorder
You mean a Stylophone and they are available in Toys R Us! Its true. I had a little solo part the other night to do at a gig. Uknown to the band members i had my Stylophone in my back pocket and whipped it out and began soloing on it. Its great.
Hi fellow chatters.. I have just sold my dream rig and am now in the process of replacing it with something smaller and lighter. My Ampeg 8,10 and Trace V4 will have a new home as of tomorrow. I want to replace it with a Hartke Kilo and AK410 cab... however... Speaking intitally with GAK, who were great, they informed me that the head would be available on the 15 March - hooray - and gave me a great cash price on it! So, over to Talkbass where I have a discussion with Mr Hartke who informs me that the date for availability is April! Booo! But hey 6 weeks at worst...And then onto my local shop Reddog Music who as always are great and do their very best for matching GAK but inform me that I can have the cab now but will have to wait until August/September for the head because they are no in production yet! Eh??? is my reply, how can this be?? The Hartke rep old the shop that this is how it is for now. GRRRR... GRRRR... What am I buying into here? Its the first time I have moved to a new manufacturer in years! Andy
Maybe you need to re-think. You could always go for the TC Electronic stuff or the Mark Bass.
All my gigging gear now is either 2nd hand or bought through endorsements, so I've not paid full whack for any of it. I'm finally about to sort out insurance (way overdue) but was wondering, should I insure it for the price it'd cost to replace it new/full price or should I insure it for the price I paid for it? I guess it'd cost more to insure it for new prices but then if anything happened to it and I'd insured it for 2nd hand prices, it'd be harder to replace it (not quite the same for endorsement gear). Thanks for any help! Thom
I insure for the cost of replacing the item new. Yes, costs more but not a lot more. Secondhand prices ca n vary but you can always find a manufacturers recommended price. I use musicGuard.

Ex Girlfriend in 1984: tell me you are not going to spend your holiday money on a bass guitar. Me: hmmm, well Ex Girlfriend in 1984: well its me and the holiday or the bass guitar - you choose The bass was with me for 24 years -
Notes and theory is all good - but some of the best theorists i know aren't the best improvisers. I'd say you need to add equal amounts of inspiration and feel too. This will develop over time. A good place to start may be to learn the melody (if there is one hehe). This gives you notes that fit the song structure. I'll add that you would know which notes will work if you were a theorist too but playing them in an order and timing that are pleasing/interesting takes a bit of practice and experience. Just keep working at it and keep learning. The more you know the more you realise you don't know. Its quite depressing and exciting at the same time.

If you get an outboard the advantage is that you can use it with different basses. Sadowsky do a great outboard pre-amp. I got an Audere pre-amp installed in my Jazz Bass and am more than happy with it. Others will tell you about the East pre-amp. If you go for PuP replacement you need to be sure about what is right for you as you might end up installing a set that don't do what you want. For example, i installed some Quarter Pounders in a bass once and really didn't like them. They sounded too "Heavy Metal" to my ears. So there i was with a set of PuPs i didn't want and sold them at a loss on EvilBay.
