Hi BottomE, thanks for the offer. I'm still pretty much a novice on bass so stepping in for gigs at short notice is probably (almost certainly!) beyond me at the moment. I hope to practise more with others to help improve to a gigging level. Thanks again for the offer.
No worries. Come and say hello if you are about. Look in local gig guides for the GoodFoot band. All the best Jerry
I guess it's all down to personal preference, apologies if anyone thinks I'm knocking their choice of MIA or MIM Fenders. I've ended up keeping my MIJ Fenders and selling on the US ones purely based on the way they feel and sound, I've just never felt attached to a US one. As for build quality, I've seen some terrible MIA (and MIM) Fenders, bad neck joints, poor fitting control panels and pickup misalignment mostly. The quality control on the MIJ / CIJ seems a bit less variable, I've not seen as many really dodgy ones. Maybe I've just been lucky. I may pick up a US Fender one day and fall in love with it, but it hasn't happened yet!
Never found a stock Fender from anywhere that has the build quality you would expect from the price tag. The quality seems to sway between average and quite good.
Hi, I've recently taken up bass after many years playing guitar. I play with some mates once a month and I'd like to play with others a bit more frequently. I also play drums and saxophone (alto & tenor) but am primarily looking to play bass and improve. I have my own gear, transport etc. and I'm quite happy to play all types of music. I'm also happy to gig if you want but gigging isn't a necessity. I live in the Poole area so anywhere not too far away would be great including Bournemouth and other areas of south-east Dorset. Hope to hear from you, Kev.
Hi mate, you can always come and dep for me when/if i can't do a date. We are in Bournemouth and i am looking for some cover as i think i will be spread a bit thin this year. Let m eknow what you think.

Wow - what a story. Sounds like you'll be better off outta that band. Really sorry about your dog. I know how it feels mate.

Some of the things that you guys argue about should be discussed - dynamics, stage presence and the like but in a positive way. It sounds like your band have gone past being civil so I don't think you have to ask. Leave. I would rather stick hot knitting needles through my own eyeballs that put up with that sh*t. In a years time you'll be in another band - lovin it and thinking why did i put up with that previous crap for so long. It's a no-brainer.

210mm wrist to tip (could be 200 or 220 depending on how you define the start of wrist) 230mm thumb to pinkie I think doing the Vulcan salute at an early stage of my childhood has helped develop my finger stretching.

Amp - flat and usually cut the bass a notch depending on the room. I normally have a finer fiddle when playing as the room dynamic will change with punters in it innit? I have a Lttle Mark amp which has been like a revelation to me and i confess to playing with the filters on a couple of songs to dial in a more vintage tone (unless using my passive bass). I use three bases and they all need a little tweaking. StingRay is too bassy on full - Jazz Bass has active preamp which i am still learning and the Hamer is a passive which is normally full on the bridge PuP and 8/10 on the front PuP. As has been mentioned - there are way too many variables to be able to do a guide IMHO. You could do one for genres i guess but the room you are playing in and of course the blend with the other instruments will determine the ultimate EQ.

This is interesting. I also thought having pro gear would guarantee a great sound in the studio and have been really dissapointed by the lack of attention/interest from engineers in my past few visits to studios. I have even stopped going to the final mix as i can't be assed with all the arguing. I go into the studio, get the bass down in about the second or third take - say goodbye to my bandmates and let them get on with it. You shouldn't have to argue with someone when you are paying them. I tried the nice approach first but that didn't work. I am constantly dissapointed with the output from local studios (there aren't many) and can get a much better sound with my bass direct into my USB soundcard! I have resigned myself to not listening to stuff that we have recorded. Sounds defeatist but its just a way of dealing with something that doesn't seem to have a solution. On the other hand i do get a fantastic sound in my USB interface.

Cracker last night in a large cocktail bar/club. Queue at the door all night and dancing from almost word go. Capped by two encores (could of done more) and sold a hat full of CDs. Also dished out a lot of business cards. Excellent indeed and one very happy band (and club owner). As an aside i used a StingRay at this gig where previously i had used a Jazz bass and the EQ on the amp has to be so different in the same venue. The StingRay is way too aggressive when on full with the on board EQ so had to turn bass down on amp and onboard. The jazz bass is much easier to blend in the overall mix
Yeah, been there. We all have ,haven't we? Don't fret too much about it. You'll probably be flawless for a few gigs after that one.
+1 There aint a musician on the planet who hasn't had a bad gig.
Anyone else have an experience like this before?
Ouch - not for a long time. What happened? Was it drug/booze related or was it nerves or unfamiliarity of band and material?
Strange how Duran Duran are to some, an 'uncool' band ....bit too girly....bit too pretty? ugly = good musician pretty boys = must be fakers I think they did some great tunes, good fun to play with some quite technical basslines too. ....I don't think the late Mr Edwards would have bequithed his StingRay to a poor bassist? this seems live and some good playing too
One mans meat is anothers poison ....Don't care what they look like or anything like that. Musically, for me they were and are utter sh*te. SLB always sounds like he is on the verge of touching cloth with his horrific strained vocals. Its like the band played in a certain key just to see if he would.
-
Do a trade for something that you will play. Or sell the 5 string. Theres something sad about an unplayed instrument.
-
What is particularly painful apart from the horrid sounding production is Simon Le Bads vocals. He always sounds like he is on the limit of his range and has one of those voices that grates. Yuk just thinking about it. It just all sounds so soul-less and plastic.

How do you insure your basses against loss or theft?
This particular quote does not cover away from home because whoever filled it in opted for none of it to be covered away from the home location. I use Musicguard and have 50% insured away from home.
+1 me too. Also a bit of public liability insurance as well so i can safely bash anyone with the headstock of my bass knowing that i will be covered. Nice. -
Bienvenue. Nice to meet you. You're English is better than most on here
The thread has probably lasted a while because people post replies that warrant a reply. Like yours. The post wasn't about a crap drummer failing an audition. It was about my disbelief that her idiot of a tutor would put the poor girl forward for the audition in the first place. Apologies that this thread has now lasted another 10 seconds.
Just surprised that there is any surprise that a musician turns out to be not very good. And being a teacher. Anyone can be a teacher if they find someone willing to be their student. It isn't a given that because someone is a teacher they know what they are doing. This is the music business.
+1 on the Stax stuff and that will be the great Jack Ashford on tambourine (and also vibes).
I have just seen his CV (Jack Ashford). Wow. I was listening to Junior Walker the other night then took a look on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDd69AV1vWY The guys bass sounds like its gonna jump out and give you a good hiding. Love it. Also a nice post from the bass player. "I was the bassist with Jr. but in this video I'm playing guitar. I met Jr when i was 17 and did not have a bass so he takes down to the music store in downtown South Bend, IN . We walk in and he tells Mack the owner. Hey, got one new guy with me and he needs a bass. He says walk around and pick out one. I'm like are you serious, any one i want ? Jr says yea ! So I grabbed that Jazz and walked out the door without paying one cent. My dream had come true LOL Allstar 1979-1995 Darryl B"
