String suggestions - Makes and where to get them?
BottomE replied to chuck_stones's topic in General Discussion
I bet when I revisit Bass chat in a few hours this thread will be about three pages long And I love DR High beams, but they are stainless, so maybe not what you want. I have found them to be good for punchy rock and funk so far.
+1 i tried lots until i got some of these. i play funk and they are perfect for that. -
There are some great experiences on here - all valid and unique. Thanks for sharing them. I was lucky enough to go pro by accident. A chance phone call and a 6 month gig in Dubai in a very posh hotel literally fell into my lap. I then fell into a "circuit" and became known to agents and the whole thing was self sustaining. The main thing that came out of it for me was that it was 75% personality and 25% ability that made the thing work or not work. The bands that did well were the ones that were organised and knew what was required. You can learn on the job and its a great way to accelerate your learning because you will be playing songs that you wouldn't naturally play. And end up liking some of them as well (thinks of a particularly good Neil Sedaka song)! Now i have a proper job and play semi pro - probably 7 gigs a month and am involved in a couple of original projects and am equally as happy with my musical journey. The status of pro or not makes no difference i think its more about finding the right outlets at the right time for your music.

Good tips in this thread. First thing i would try on your string problem would be raising the height of the PuPs and/or taking a look at the action. For you live sound assuming you are not using a PA +1 on lowering the bass and upping the low mids either on your amp or your bass. The bass will sound punchier from the audience perspective. I always start with the EQ flat and normally just twiddle the bass setting on the amp to suit the room. Sometimes though spending ages on getting your sound right is a waste of time cos when you have a load of punters in a room they affect the sound and the EQ needs tweaking again!
Apologies in advance if I'm being a bit dense here. I'm intending on putting one of my Jazz basses up for sale on the marketplace, but I have one question that the guidance notes don't really help with. What does BUMP mean? Is there anything else I should know before I proceed? Thanks
hi BUMP is a way of getting your post back to the top of the Topic if it gets a bit lost in the lower pages of the topic. I think you also need to mention a price - what you want for the bass and shipping details. i would also advise making clear any packaging arrangements you intend to use if you are posting the bass. other than that good luck.

Can't believe it but when i think about it "Real Mutha for Ya" a Johnny Guitar Watson track is pretty boring bass wise but the track is great. I do something different when the sax and guitar take solos but other than that its quite mindless. Suits the groove though.

Can't vouch for accuracy but found this. |----------3-5-5-5----------3-5-5-5-|----------3-5----------3-5---------------| |------------------------------------|------------------------------------------| |--3--3-3-----------3--3-3----------|--3--3-3---------3-3--------3-0-3-2-1-0-| |------------------------------------|------------------------------------------| |------------------------------------|--3-3--------3-----------| |------------------------------------|-------------------------| |---------0-----------1--------------|--------1-1-------1-1-1-| |--4---------------------------------|-------------------------|
Yeah playing it on my own isnt the problem haha! Almost got it down now! AC
finally nailed it! It took me a couple of hours last night including getting a midi file to import into Cubase to jam along with but its VERY satisfying to play. I'll post it later and you can laugh at my feeble attempt. I apologise in advance for the midi sounds assigned and the drums. It was just getting something to record along with. I'll post the midi too if anyone wants it.

Thank you.
I have an improv exam tomorrow. We have two lecturers, and the one who's conducting this exam isn't so great. He doesn't teach us anything about improv and expects us to solo for FIFTY SIX bars over Brown Skin Girl by Sonny Rollins. How do I do this? I'm not a natural soloist at all; everything I play sounds gash or just goes into a pentatonic funk riff that doesn't fit at all. Hurrgh. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I would go round his house tonight and cut the brake pipes on his car. NOTE the above is a joke. So pls do NOT do that. Alternatively, learn the melody. Then take a few parts of the melody - put them in a cup - shake them up a bit and pull them out again. A good basis for starting improv is the melody. It will give you a good starting point.
No real news, except that I thumped on it awhile waiting for my kids to do choir practice. This is a wonderful player, I'm very happy with it. I do think it looks just a tad disarming... but I'm good with it. This is my new full-time player. Pic when something very new and different happens! Like nitro!
They are greaaaaaaat players! I am lucky enough to own a Stingray and Jazz Bass but my Cruise comes out as often (if not more) than the others. (Don't tell them though). I am keeping my eye on this thread Count. Cannot wait to see it in its next incarnation.

It depends. For cover bands its great and there are as many gigs as ever if not more. We have found that though there are fewer possible venues there are actually more of them that will put live music on. I think the reason is that the smoking ban has hit a lot of places and they are trying to offer something different other than Sky or a guy putting on records. We are also in a holiday destination town and so there are a shed load of hotels running functions/wedding etc. On the other hand for bands playing originals its horrific. An exception is the usual "Battle of the Bands" events and support slots at the larger venues. My band play both original and covers sets and think that cos we do a lot of cover gigs (about 80 a year) it keeps up the interest in the originals project. We're still going strong after 4 years which is a long time in this business as you guys probably know.
It can be hard to fathom, I played a place for about 2 years where the band was paid £300. There were never more than 7 or 8 people in attendance and also a abr man, bouncers and person on the door to pay.
i did that gig too -
Yeah, sorry about that mate. Obviously I didn't realise it was you at the time and did post later quoting your nice post saying /thread. I just thought it was another idiot ebayer. To be fair, I wasn't the only one to say something to that effect. But hopefully you won't be posting a bass wrapped like that again Really, you should see what these couriers do to packages as part of the process and you would never do that again. Once again, my apologies if I hurt you in any way.
No worries and thanks. I have noted the various experiences that many have had with couriers and will adjust accordingly. No harm done and all that.
Strong words, don't they have moderators on here!!!!
Yeah when saw that i thought my wife had started posting on Basschat Anyways BC'ers will have to find another thread to release angst as the buyer and i have reached an amicable settlement.

Many thanks to all of you who have contributed on this thread. I think i have managed to resolve the issue with the seller via another thread.

Hi, it seems we meet at last. I am the guy who sold you that lovely bass. Can i say that i totally didn't mean to mislead you with the sale and i might well be an inexperienced seller. I am truly sorry that you are dissapointed with the sale. This was never my intention. I have sold a few basses, posted them in their cases and this has never been an issue before. Perhaps naively i believed that the case was adequate protection. I have been a bit around the world playing bass and must be very lucky as the majority of time my basses have survived well enough in bass cases. That said, i am looking at this completely differently as you are a BC'er and not some idiot trying to rip me off. I am happy to send you £20 towards the cost of a new case. I just bought a new case for a jazz bass off of Thomann and it was £43. How does that sound?
What does he say is wrong with the case? You have sent him a picture Bo the latches work? If they do theres nothing wrong with it and you should stick to your guns
The case was/is all working. He hasn't been able to articulate his problem really - just stuff like "Its ruined the whole thing" and "I paid a premium delivery rate". I am sticking to my guns but have been left feeling really bitter about it. At one point he said something about buying a £60 bass which made me think he might be a basschatter - perhaps someone on the Sue Ryder bass thread? If so, can he/she please man (or woman) up and leave a comment on this thread?
You said in your listing the bass comes in ITS case which will be included. Your photo shows a really nice case which implies that is the case it s coming in. If however you shipped it out in an adequate but dog of a case then I would side with the buyer and its understandable that he's a tad miffed and expecting some financial recompense or the case it was implied the bass would be shipped in.
The one in the pic is the one it was shipped in.

Well populated forums tend to represent the wider spectrum of life with many varied opinions and personalities. Whereas in real life its easy to avoid people you don't like (most of the time) a forum post is open to all. Celebrity or not my advice would be to avoid forums altogether unless you can take a bit of criticism and/or hostility.
