Could we see the listing, so we may draw our own conclusions of the exact wording in context?
Yes, for sure. I can't access Ebay from work but will try to remember to do this tonight.

Are some people not destined to play 5-strings?
BottomE replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I don't know about others but my destiny (at least for the medium term) does not include any 5 string basses as i have just sold the 2 that i tried to like. There was a period of adjustment and i did get used to the wider fretboard and enjoyed being able to use different fingerings without so much movement. For me though anything other than 4 looks and feels a bit like a freak. And when i play a 4 it feels just right. And i can't think of anything i need to play that i can't cover with a 4. And finally all my favourite bass players use 4 strings. If thats good enough for them its good enough for me. Still, each to their own... -
Im sure they often get things wrong, the fact you got your money from the ombusman would point to that. If anything, I would have expected pay pal to lean towards the seller to make sure they get their fees. Anyway, to the OP I hope you get it sorted without too much hassle. Ive learnt the hard way to make sure I check double and triple check the listing, and keep the photographs. Last time I sold an amp I even took a video to show all the controls working and no hum etc. It takes a bit of extra time but can save loads of heartache in the end
Thanks for your opinions. Its difficult to see both sides of this issue being so close to it. The hardest thing to swallow is the implication that you have cheated someone out of something. When i buy a bass i will only get it a decent case if it is a keeper - if not its usually sold in the case that it came in which is normally adequate. I can understand that people might have a different view on this but when (and i have) received a bass in a rough old case it does not bother me. Its the bass that i am interested in.
I wish I could be as confident as everyone else, but I can't. Ebay & Paypal are bastards to sellers in dispute cases, they almost always find in the buyers favour. In the shell of a nut, unless you describe in detail any cosmetic/functional issues with an item then Paypal will expect it to be perfect, it it aint they cite "non-disclosure" & you lose. The buyer is clearly a dick if he expects a case to be perfect & he should have checked first, but ebay don't go with the Caveat emptor approach. I speak from first-hand experience. I think Paypal will take the usual spineless approach & instruct you to refund. You can dig your heels in & fight to delay matters but the chances are the little twat will be out gigging your bass & treating it like crap for a couple of months in the meantime. Out of interest can you name & shame the buyer, he has a place reserved in my banned bidders list. Good luck & keep us posted.
Thanks. I am not confident either although the buyer is painting himself as a pretentious twat in the dispute emails and that might go in my favour. If i'd have known i was selling the bass to a case player then i wouldn't have bothered. It just stinks of someone trying it on and left me really bitter about the whole thing.
Absolutely. Caveat emptor, as always, applies; if he wanted to know the condition of the case he should have asked.
Indeed, and also why did he sign for it? It was insured...
What did the listing about the case? If you only mentioned the bass for sale and it turned up in a case (no matter what the condition) then he got a bonus. Ebay/paypal will review the listing against the dispute, so it should turn out okay. There are those out there that will always try it on.......
The listing said that "the bass will be shipped in a hard case." That is the only mention of the case in the listing.

Hi, i want to keep this simple and as clear as possible. Guy buys bass from me off of E(vil)Bay. I post it insured. He receives and signs for it. He sends me email saying that the bass is fine but the case is in very bad condition. I reply saying that the bass is the item that he has bid on - the case which i except is not in great condition is only a means of transporting the bass but perfectly adequate to protect an instrument during transportation. He raises a dispute. For me it seems like he is scamming me so i have to buy a new case (thats what he asked for in the dispute) for him. What do you think?

I have just bought a Jazz Bass from YouMa. Lovely guy, great communication and item totally as described. Packaged well and sent on time. What more can i say. A rare transaction of pure joy AND the bass is lovely too! Good luck on the fretless YouMa.

Great - nicely crafted song - everyones playing for the band - no weak points. Well done.
Yeah, I remember patterns too and build muscle memory around them. I'd recommend recording your songs - which should be reasonable easy, given the prevalence of smart phones. Then just structure your practice around a combination of play along to the the drums and guitar of the track and working on your notes.
+1 When you playback think about your finger patterns and hey presto. I am lucky enough to have a terrible memory for all things important but an amazing memory for music...
And a pretty quick set of bass playing fingers! My original thread here, probably not much use http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=14725&hl= Good luck C
indeed we pulled out of doing this in the end as the drummer couldn't cope with the incredibly fast double bass drum parts. btw - anyone notice the slight hiss on the recording when the bass comes in? Lovely stuff. -
Hehe, thanks! I'm just glad I've actually found someone who knows the song, let alone likes it too. Anyone I've mentioned it to just looks at me blankly.
+1 Anyone who is/was into Northen Soul will know the song as it was a classic on the dancefloors of Wigan apparently. I am gonna revisit the recording and try and remember to jot down some chords that fit the chorus for you. And also just rembering the little riff at the end of the lyrics - "and the night begins to..." Great stuff -
At a glance they look around $500-$800 US. .
Thats insanely cheap for that quality of bass IMHO. Good luck with the build i'll come by and check yer progress.
Hi guys, For years I've been listening to the amazing bassline for this track, and I just can't even begin to get my head round it. Does anyone know how to play it, or have any ideas on where to start? In particular it's the pre-chorus and chorus that has me completely struggling; It moves so fast! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsSoDsxB7Yo Cheers, Oli
Hi, firstly let me congratulate you on your impeccable taste. For me too, this track is a classic. I have done a version of this which is ALL BASS (chords melody and bass line) except for drums and organ. The first bit it about the timing (aint it always). Listen to the spacing of the notes - i know its fast but it has a distinctive phrasing which makes it work. The notes over the chord changes on the intro and subsequent verses are based around: Ab | G | B | C Start there. Whilst the notes are on the root there is an important chromatic run from the G to the B. The chorus is another matter... Have fun -
This was my first "proper" bass too and i had it for over 20 years before i gave in to the GAS. Great basses.
BottomE : thanks for watching! i do want to get good recording gear but i have no idea where to start(and i heard it is expensive).. your playing and your band have amazing feel.. youre very lucky to have such a band, im sure you have no trouble getting into the groove with them Huwberry : i love hiromi as well.. shes a genius and shes incredibly beautiful and one of my main influences.. im also a big fan of tony grey, another genius musician.. i really enjoyed your "do i do" video.. you remind me of james jamerson.. tight tight groove
Thanks. I worked with and met a lot pf Phillipino musos when i was working as a pro musician in the Middle East - Dubai, Abu Dhabi. I was always knocked out by the technical ability of your countrymen. If you were able to get a USB interface that goes into a computer your recordings would instantly sound a thousand times better. Over here you can get one for about £100. No idea how much that is in your money.
