I'm one too. Only because I was taught this way. Mark King is as well, apparently.
As is Dave Hill of Slade.
in fact, I would go so far as to say the beatles are the most over-rated music act of all time.
+1! Though can someone please explain to me the actual musical definition of the word "influential"? NOT in relation to the above quote though, obviously the Beatlezzzzzzz were influential; but AFAICS it's a word that is bandied about far to easily to give credibibility where none is deserved. To me "influential" means that they left a large & lasting change in their genre. for eg; How can Bob Dylan be classed as influential? All he did was influence Donovan to do similar with lesser success. People/bands I've seen described as influential........... Beatles? Yes Dylan? No Hendrix? Yes Springsteen? No

Went to buy tix for the Colne Blues Festival, Lancs today. The guitar shop there (Uncle Neil's http://www.shopincolne.co.uk/uncle_neils_music_store.html ) has an HH head, one broken front handle, for £50.

Making your own cables - where to buy materials?
Big_Stu replied to lanark's topic in Accessories and Misc
When I needed to make a few I bought a reel of Klotz instrument cable from Scayles Music in Edinburgh. They had Neutrik jacks too. Longest cable I made was 20 yards, which is still going strong. The soldering skills you learn are also invaluable for fitting replacement pots & jacks yourself - instead of the minimum rates than any shops tech will charge - and also for fitting new pickups etc that you want to try out. -
Just when my j bass upgrade was going well. I was adjusting the intonation on my new bridge and I have stripped the thread on the G-string saddle. Not sure if it is the screw or saddle but the screw looks in good shape. Gutted!
If you can get the saddle & screw apart any half-decent metal-worker/engineers should be able to retap it for you for pennies. Take the screw with you too. It'll weaken it a bit so you'll have to be careful from then on, but I reckon you will be anyway.
These guitars sound absolutely fantastic, I tried one for a laugh...that thing is no joke.
Very true, an amazing range off them. I tried the PAFs because his custom one had them, they sound very Les Paul-ish if needed. It's coming up for a year since I won this at a fund-raiser gig by Andy Scott of The Sweet. It hadn't been played for a while & needed a bit of work; just found that the tone pot is on the way out, but I'm not sure if it isn't on a PCB.
Mr Foxen is right and up to a point so is brensabre.
^This! It's a minefield. Many years ago I had a Laney 60w prarctise amp. It blew very soon after buying it & I found that the speaker in it (a Laney branded one) was also rated at 60w. I bought one of these
Celestion BL10
and it was awful, plenty of headroom but still rattled. I don't remember enough about it to know why, but I'm guessing it moved too much air for the small cab of the amp. I've also been lucky in sticking a couple of 15" Eminence Deltas into a Marshall 800 2 x 15". They are vastly higher wattage than the original Celestion 100w drivers but it's worked! The bass is seismic from it. Mr Foxen is bang on about the matching to cab volume, but sometimes you strike lucky.

Superglue for me; I've used it on serious cuts many times. Also had it used once in hospital too. It's what it was originally intended for IIRC, though not the same as the over-the-counter stuff.

I think he told them to do it themselves when he found out that he wouldn't get them cheaper if he made them himself.

A gearstalker's Holy Grail.
Yup, this was at Marshall before they got shipped out to Germany to join the M'head tour of the time. I took some delight in telling Lemmy that I played his amps before he did. And also found out how crap Fenders are at playing chords on.

I've yet to find a cheapie one that doesn't get really bad write-ups. Screw-fix is your friend for a good cheap one.
What are the humbuckers in the Tele and SG?
original John Birch customs from the early/mid 70's. The Tele has a Supeflux, the SG has a Magnum (as used by Tony Iommi & at the time the highest output pickup by a very long way - now? I dunno.)

My other babies which don't get near enough use. At one time I took my Slade fixation way way way too far!!!!! When Bo Diddley was going to tour here I bought this in NYC as I'd been promised a meet with him at The Robin. Sadly he had a stroke before the UK part of the tour was due to start & died a few weeks later. There'd be very little RnR as we have it now without good ol Bo. It now has the Electromatics back in & the chrome mounts.

Pretty sure that was a MG Hiwatt. Though since they bought the Hiwatt name & then reproduced vintage Hiwatts based on the old models you do get an authentic item. It's when they start modifying a cheap slave amp for example & put one of their preamps into it & a knocked up "vintage" spec plate that it gets seedy. There's a whole list of such dealings on Plexi Palace.
How can this be done exactly....? Not being snidey, just curious...
IIRC - steam & gentle twisting pressure against the neck's twist.

I loved the way he was a tone fiend. It was a job, a role - or his place in the band. He actually analysed his sound, developed & changed it. That's a real bassist right there.
Hi I just get a old Avon rose morris short scale. Which is a copy of a Gibson .its a good little bass but it sound is not good and I think its a bit weak sounding. So anyone knows were I can get a new pick up for it and what are the best strings to on please let me know. Thanks
They're a nice bass, had one myself, knew someone who has one. Are you talking the EB0 or the EB3 copy? If it's the EB0 then some may say get a DiMarzio Model I which many like but I had one on an actual Gibson EB3 & it was nowhere near the Gibson sound. But you can coil split them so you'll get more range - just not a Gibson one. IF it was me I'd be saving & buying a vinatge Gibson one, that way you can keep it if you move the bass on or upgrade. Though I know many in the USA who swear by the Dark Star. Both the vids are for you to see what they look like - sound off yours won't be the same. Both of them should be a retro fit - not much work needed - but CHECK! Some copies look like they have a Gibson size pup in but many are more square than a Gibson so you'd have a gap top or bottom of the cavity.

Not music, but two classic film which I'd been meaning to get on DVD for a long time, one of which has only recently become available, so just enjoyed a fabulous nostalgia attack from Sunday afternoon films from when I was a kid. The Mysterious Island ............. with loads of Ray Harryhausen creatures ...... and Privates Progress with the legend that was Terry-Thomas...... "you're an absolute shaaaaah, you've behaved like a shaaaah & you'll be treated like a shaaah"

I think a lot of it is just "the breaks", & the determination while you're young enough, right place at the right time, missing the boat to a big break. I used to go see a band near Edinburgh called "East West" who apart from having a crap name were fantastic, mostly covers but in their own way. They did THE most amazing version of "Drift Away" I ever heard; singer was Colin, also on rythym guitar who went back to being a sales rep. Guitarist was Brian who was so laid back he was horizontal but was probably the best guitarist I ever saw live. When EW split he went to being a tutor from home & session player.
