1. Had an afternoon of listening to Slade's "Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply" Canadian import album Pulp Fiction OST and Wolfstone "Year Of The Dog". a mixed bag
 2.
I suspect that John's time is mostly spent making Mark King-alike basses so the 6 strings/Calibbas models are accordingly rare!
He built this about 4 years ago for a guy I know in the USA. Gorgeous machine, I'd love one myself but couldn't justify the price-tag, either to myself or the other half.
 3.
.............an iron is fine, but this will only work if the wood fibres have been compressed (ie a dent) rather than chipped.
Yup, that's what JayDee told me, mine is one that I have to live with.
 4.
I don't know what's worse... Someone charging £26 for a box or someone being stupid enough to buy it!
Yeah, I did feel stupid doing it, I did tell him what I thought, reputation earned etc. But the buyer at the other end just taggged it onto the shipping costs.
 5.
This guy (who i know and is a guitarist) is seriously selling off cardboard boxes that he gets for free when his stock is delivered. He must have got the idea from peeps selling on Ebay going into his shop asking for boxes and being the tight fisted cnut that he is decided to sell them. Sure, some will say good luck to him. I say, No, you are a tight-ass, mean spirited tiny minded ahole.
When I was shipping a Hiwatt head to the USA I had the brainwave of asking MG in Leeds for a Hiwatt box. Jason - for it was he - charged me £26 for an empty box, which he said was all they used for shiping internationally
Send it with the neck detatched, might be easier to find a smaller box?
^ This, it's what I did sending my Gretch Bo Diddley back to here from New York, worked a treat. With lot's of bubblewrap, gaffa & cardboard between the two bits.
 6. I've always found that women with such insecurities, if it wasn't guitars/bands it would be something else that they'd latch on to. I stopped playing & sold my beloved EB3 because of my (now ex)wife. It was the thin end of the wedge & went from bad to worse. Any woman who gave me any ultimatum now would lose.
 7. Reported. I had an Antoria "EB3" with pups identical to those.
 8. More years ago than I care to remember I was looking for some pups for something or other- I phoned around & spoke with Kent who was incredibly helpful, he was just about to start a new business "Rainbow Pickups", which was where I eventually went. Since I haven't seen anyone mention Rainbow in this thread so far I guess this is old news? Kent Armstrong Rainbow Pickups. Hazeldene House, Nickley Wood Road, Shadoxhurst, Kent TN26 1LZ England Tel: +44 1223 732527 I also had an old KA P90 dogear in a guitar & sold it on along with a guitar sale. I still kick myself to this day over letting that one go.
 9.
popping some vids up on YouTube
Isn't that what we've just been watching?
 10.
I'm not saying he's not a nice person to talk to, but he clearly enjoys showing off and doesn't realise that it gets old quickly. Most people at the show that stopped and watched him stayed for maybe 30 seconds or a minute, then got sick of it and walked away rather than staying to see more on the roto stand. I think the problem is that he's so busy playing fast, he never drops into a groove. The kind of players that can do this style of slap and are musically respected generally hit a groove, then do a crazy bar or two to show off, then go back to the groove. He seems quite happy to just play sh*te with no feel from start to finish for the sake of showing off.
Kinda like watching Mark King play Mr Pink without the rest of the gig, or band, but for about 12 hours then?
 11.
............and widdle incessantly when I'm on my own.
I'm the same, too much coffee in the morning I reckon.
 12.
care taken to not scour off the partridge stickers on the trannies, I have the screening cans for the pre valves put aside.
I take it this was a dry scourer? If not you're a braver man than I, not saying it's wrong - but I'd be scared of switching it on ever again. I also read that the rust on the tranny's assists them in some way, can't remember the details.
 13. Someone who should get out more?
 14.
..............d when not sent in a hardcase!
Why would you? Unless you're talking double-boxing and a sh*t-load of bubblewrap instead, why would you? Or is this just a fr'instance?
Please think carefully before considering Parcelforce in future
+1 - the saying that involves renumeration & brass washers springs to mind.
 15.
It sounds like the shop let a numpty loose on your bass. Get them to do the job properly or take it to someone who knows what they're doing.
+1, sounds like they used a standard jack. Refund & take it elsewhere.
 16.
not something crappy from maplins.
Maplins have stacks in by Neutrik, which I've never had any problems with. The last sockets I bought were £1.99 each; still going strong after a lot of use. With my first bass as a teenager there wasn't a nearby guitar shop, I asked at a TV repair shop if they could solder a switch for me - and they did it for nothing, said it made an interesting change for them.
 17.
Put some wet tissue on the hole, and touch it with a hot soldering iron, the water/steam pressure can pop the fibers back out, then fill whats left with superglue and polish down.
^ this, I've done it once with a ding on the back of a neck. I was told to do it by a luthier who does the same thing. T-cut is far too abrasive (so JayDee told me) & has been seen to rub through a sunburst in inexperienced hands. Tough call & I know how you feel, my beloved John Birch has one ding only on it; from me being careless when throwing a lead down & teh tip dinged it on teh top horn. Like you I'm too scared to risk trying a fix on a precious bass.
 18.
Squire didn't do the work himself; Sam Lee did it.
The same Sam Lee who built Dave Hill's "Dad's Gibson"??? That's only the 2nd time I've heard his name related to guitar build. "4000" - I doff my imaginary cap to you. No it won't be anyone other than Lemmy I was remembering, since I have/had no interest in Chris Squire. It was maybe more than one article I was combining with a memory from 30+ years ago. Though in reference to your comments on StingrayPete's comments; not for the first time I will say that I "read" all posts on here as being solely the opinion of the writer & never to be gospel or claimed as "fact" unless it's specifically stated as such. I find it makes reading less annoying, baiting & controversial............. mostly.
 19.
I saw Bruce Foxton on the cover of BGM a couple of years ago with an all-black 4003 (Jetglo with black scratchplate) but yeah its true he plays Fender more
I read some promo material for a "From The Jam" tour last year & it said he used a Precision for most of The Jam's recording; Malice was specifically mentioned. Surprised me, taking the blurb at face value.
As for "Lemmy had never played an original one", you've lost me. Lemmy has played loads of original ones. Are you not very familiar with Hawkwind / Motorhead or something? His original bass was "an original one", the White BT was an original one, etc etc. The maple-necked one isn't the only Ric (whether it is or isn't) Lem has ever played, it's one of many. As for the spec, Ric have stated quite categorically that when an artist gets a signature model (which they don't bother with now) it isn't necessarily an exact copy of an instrument the artist has played but more of a version that the artist wants to play, designed in conjunction with the artist; it will therefore vary according to the artist in question. With Lem it was more a case of "if we built you a signature Ric what would you want?".
In the early 80's there was an excellent A5 size magaine called "Music UK". I don't think it lasted long. But one I kept for years had a Lemmy special in it, from when they'd really hit the big time. He said his all maple Rick started off as a Fireglo (he said it was pink) which he hated, so he sanded it all off. Not being arsed to refin it, it was for several years - in his words - bled on, spewed on, spat on & had all kinds of alcohol and bodily fluids soaked into it. When it got too much he sanded it back again. He thought between the now slightly smaller body size & all of the abuse it was what gave it "his tone". And of course he "always" replaced the neck pup with one from a Thunderbird.

 24. Not necessarily. If you get an improvement by moving your jack plug about it could be just teh socket has bent loose. If you can get the jack plate & socket out easily try bending the hot pin inwards to improve the "click" of your jack going in (not too much though), the bit the tip of your jack clicks onto. Do with with a couple of pairs of pliers, if you just use one you risk cracking the insulating layer which will short out (knacker) the jack socket. Maplins sell stacks of different kinds of jack sockets (Neutriks) for peanuts if needed.
 25. Just a thought - or two.......... I just looked and, for eg, Off Topic goes back to 2007. While it's great to have an archive of threads to show changes over the years I picked out a random thread from back then, one post had 4 pics; each one being 800 pixels wide. Couldn't such threads just be deleted? Or maybe have a heads up that such threads have served their purpose & can go? Personally I use Photobucket, & resize all my pics to a max of (IIRC) 360 pixels wide; which is one of Pb's default settings for message board images.
