It's incredible its like they've been brainwashed or cloned to a unified doctrine of stupidity - they don't seem to have any understanding of your hypothesis.....
That forum is the only one I ever saw where the users are anoraks of their chosen brand. There's plenty of Fender, MM & Gibson users on here & other forums who REALLY know their stuff & can be, and are, well respected for it. But that crowd are just pathetic, one guy really went into overdrive about John Birch on one thread, to the point I thought he was a spoilt kid in the vein of Beavis & Butthead, but his profile was that of a guy in his 50's.
A more successful approach would probably have been to have introduced yourself into the conversation as someone with personal knowledge of the seller and the bass in question and state the facts as you see them along with your opinions of its authenticity in a calm and reasoned manner. Such a post would certainly have made me more willing to give your friend the benefit of doubt about whether the inclusion of incorrect information in the listing was wilful or not. Instead you put on a lame hardman act, belittled people who gave the benefit of their knowedge and experience by referring to them as "self-styled experts" and incorrectly threw around false allegations of possible libel - all whilst admitting that you know nothing about the instrument in question and being incapable of providing any evidence to back up your position that the questionable information was correct other than vague unquoted hearsay and wishful thinking.
All that's missing here is Jack Regan saying "You're nicked".
You got a linky to that thread? I've been a member over there for about ten years but I stopped posting because the sheer level of RIC sycophancy (especially when JH posts) made me sick. A couple of the posters are decent (Ilan springs to mind), but if you dared challenge any established point of view on the bass threads, the shutters come down.
This was just one of them http://www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopi...ch&start=60 Page 5, my post is under "Mad Dog Cole" about half way down - and then the Ricks are great & all else is crap begins. Loved how it ended from a poster with a quick insult before the mod endorsed the insult then locked it.
Back in the days before Macs were used in design studios we used to use surgical scalpels for cutting things out etc.
Aaaaaah! The smell of the Spraymount; the roar of the Process Camera! I've got multiple scars on my left hand off scalpels, many of them from the traditional dicking about in the studio. One quiet friday we made a full size wheel clamp from cardboard & yelo sticky backed plastic, then clamped the MDs car. Oh how he laughed when he had to explain to a visiting RBS board as to how his own car was clamped in his own car-park. "Goan practise yeer f*ckin' black arts instead of yeer f*ckin play-school sh*te" Though I preferred the 5 foot wide "clockwork key" that we fixed on top of a printers' Skoda myself.

IIRC it was in a fakers thread. Maybe they deleted it for revealing secrets??
Now this is an amusing diversion, I've just realised that the old 3" leather strap I have had kicking around since the late 70s / early 80s is a Music Man strap
Any chance of an email from MM confirming that it's genuine?
There's a couple on at the moment, I was similarly surprised that the Ibanez lasted, wonder why Mr Hall finds the John Birch so threatening eh? Should we have an unrecommended luthiers thread?
Big_Stu replied to Soloshchenko's topic in Repairs and Technical
Assuming you got an itemised receipt for it I'd tell him you want a refund - or partial refund - your call. The "or else" is to take him to the small claims court. You can use the CAB as your advisor, he can worry about the refund but more importantly teh bad press from the newspaper article(s). Last I heard it costs 10% of what you're claiming. That way you can ask for a refund of your initial outlay+ the cost of having it rectified. This way you have to be honest with yourself as to what was agreed & what he failed to deliver & you can ask another (researched & trusted luthier) for an estimate of what repairs would cost. -
Aaah the days of curly leads, now THAT was ROCK!!!
Give us warning before you do that. I'd love to watch the fall out over that
P'shopped for now, but a few dabs of black & white paint should do the real thing.
Yes - I'm afraid eBay are a law unto themselves, this is probably why John Hall gets so frustrated with them and uses the little guy - in this case yours truly - to make an example of and flex his comparitively weak corporate muscle! Having had a fair bit of communication with both Ric and eBay about this matter I now realise I'm in a no win situation. The fact remains however that John Hall did contact me personally to explain his point of view whereas eBay suspended me and sent an automated response.
It's a damn shame it's come to that, completely overboard. Given the right cash & right bass coming up at the same time; my ambition is to get a Rockinbetter black Rick copy, put a bigger, black scratchplate on it with two Jaydee b/w zebra-striped pups on it. Four white chicken-heads for the knobs and change the "Ro" on the TRC to "Fu" to read "F*ckinbetter". Then post it on John Hall's beloved RickResource.

Both progs are still available on BBC iPlayer. Didn't watch it myself as they didn't do anything for me past "Rhapsody", but they were balls out rockers in the early days.
I've read that the rags used with boiled linseed oil have a tendency to spontaneously combust before the oil on them dries. Some kind of chemical reaction. In all honesty, I don't know how true that is, but I've always been really nervous about using it since then.
Teak Oil will, but in the right conditions, like sticking the rags in a small bin with the lid closed CAN do it. It's rare but I saw it happen when I was at school, oh how we laughed.
I think I'm going to flight case the head.
I've got the SKB case for my Hiwatt head; it was a bit hard to get at the time because SKB didn't have a UK distributor. Mine came from Thomann & was around £130. Lightweight, with pull-out handle & wheels; you could buy extra foam to pad up the slant front on yours.
How times may have changed. I can recall a time when Sound City were very poor man's Marshall and you never saw them used for gtr...P.A maybe. Hiwatt made very good bass amps.. but it was Marshall or nothing for gtr when I was growing up
You must be quite young, and referring to the Marshall domination of rock music from the early 80's onwards??? http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/guitar/...ity-hiwatt.html I'm guessing - and I stress guessing - that Sound City's quality control went downhill fast after Reeves left to create Hiwatt, Joyce was recruited much later because he also had a reputation for neat work. My mistake earlier, Reeves & Joyce didn't both work together at SC.
-
This is a pic of a mate of mines SC Mk 2, I know from my own experience that it's comparable with a vintage Hiwatt I also know a guy on Plexi who's a known authority on SCs who say his are well wired too. It may be that there was a point where they ceased to be, whether that was before or after Joyce & Reeves left I don't know.
If it cannot be removed by lem-oil type cleaner/degreaser then careful sanding with scotchbrite pad or fine wire wool will help. Once purdy again you can seal it with Tru-Oil. This needs to be wiped on with a drop or two on a clean rag, rubbed well into the wood, allow 30 mins to dry then rub in a bit more. repeat several times over a couple of days to build up a silky hard lustre. I'll say that again as it excites me. Silky hard lustre. The trick is maybe 10 to 15 really light coats rubbed well in then left to harden. Tru-oil is a boiled linseed derivative from Birchwood Casey sold to condition gunstocks. For natural looking bass necks and bodies it is the doggys doo dahs.
Sounds ideal, and works a treat if you can find lint-free cloth, which many decent timber merchants sell for that reason. They sell it just along the road from me, gives a shout if you go down this road & want some getting. Gibson also do an excellent revival kit for cleaning up old finishes, it's only intended for nitro finishes though I think. GuitarGuitar used to stock it, don't know about now.
Good afternoon, Wooks79... Just in case you've not seen it, here's the site with the gen on vintage amps. Might be worth perusal..? Vintage Amps, Sound City section... Great amps, until you've heard a Hiwatt...
Hiwatts were based on early Sound Citys, IIRC it was two SC guys (Dave Reeves & Harry Joyce) who left SC to go it alone with Hiwatt. It's why they're both built like tanks & have wiring that's absolutely perfect. If you go on Plexi watch out for 1953Vintage; what he doesn't know about Sound City isn't worth knowing.

Even as I type there are currently four, count 'em FOUR Rick copies on Ebay. That's taking the piss out of Ash's John Birch. I can only think it's because Ash's is a better build quality than a real Rick And John Hall knows it. Though as has been said on here, the same could maybe be said about the Ibanez one.
Looped inputs is a term used in electronics where an input has 2 sockets, passively conected that allows a signal to loop out and onto another piece of equipment. Most recent speaker cabs have this. When you connect the 2 cabs together you are putting both sets of speakers in parallel.
Fixed it for you .... and thanks for the info.
-
When looping from one cab to another you are putting them in parallel, so 2 x 8-ohm cabs will make a 4-ohm load. To put two cabs in series, and hence sum their impedances, a special cable is required.
"Looping"?, so it's a circuit within itself, as though you were wiring them as you would in one cab? *sigh* it was so much easier in my day
The orange website says it has 2 4ohm outputs on the back, I would presume you could run the 40hm cab from one output and then daisychain (Amp->8ohmcab1->8ohmcab2) the 8ohm cabs from the other.
Not contradicting this; I just want to be clear for future reference, I would have thought that daisychaining two 8ohm cabs one into the other would have made them in series & therefore make 16ohms, or do those daisychaining jack sockets make it "see" them as parallel?
