Basschatters and their gear in Bass Guitar Magazine
Big_Stu replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in General Discussion
Bugger! My main bass had a full page piece in "Guitarist" 13 years ago; which Jimmy Lea saw, signed a copy & sent it to me - which was nice. Nothing else of note since then. -
There's one thing to practice & get good at something & to ask God for help with it, but if the athlete is like me & spending all their time on that one thing & none on God, then that is putting my trust all in myself & none in God. Therefore that object is becoming an idol & taking the place of God. I might join a worship band in the future, that would depend on where I'm called to be.
TBH I'd be more inclined to look at that from the perspective of that "footprints in the sand" story.
cheers for that , i also clicked on the headstock logo that says handcut mother of pearl.. Bugger
Bugger indeed! So is that what they're referring to - not the neck inlays at all? -
Thanks for the quick response, mine is a 2013 model and i was pretty sure that they were acrylic, i couldn't find anything on the web anywhere, is there a link you could send me so i can copy it and send it to the shipping firm? Thanks again .
Can't get more of an authroirty on it than the people who built it.......... http://www2.gibson.c...s/Features.aspx Click on the "Trapezoid Inlays" in the right hand menu for the "acrylic" bit. -
Mother of pearl dot inlays and shipping
Anyone ever had a problem shipping a bass from the states because of the dot inlays? I am at the moment, its a gibson sg standard bass, i thought it was only the custom made guitars that had mother of pearl inlays.. Obviously not.
No experience of the import/export bit but I'm a bit lost; the Gibson SG Standard Bass has Trap inlays - and they're acrylic - according to the Gibson site? Or is yours an earlier mark - or an older EB3 that you know for sure is genuine MOP? -
Cans with no ringpull at all?
Yup - you needed a particular type of opener than was pointed at the end with a tooth that caught under the rim. It made two triangular holes in the can top - one to drink from, the other to let air in. (cont in the Four Yorkshiremen sketch)
I remember the ones where the ringpull came off instead of staying attached like those modern newfangled posh ones...
Yeah, and you could pull them apart to ping the ring pull across the room with the flap bit. Kids these days eh? They haven't lived! -
So I am sitting here reading through some of the posts on here and there always seem to be somebody complaining about something or another when there is a debate going on throwing there toys out of the pram if some one else says something that they don't agree with it is not just on basschat that this happens it is on other sites too I must admit I sit here and laugh to myself at the thought of some one getting all steamed up banging away on there keyboards in anger or complaining to mods about people like little school children when there really is nothing to complain about. So why take it so seriously it is only the internet I can understand getting upset if somebody is personally attacking you but 9 times out of 10 people just have no sense of humour and take it all to seriously Pepsi
-
Opinions are great. It's how they're expressed that sometimes sucks
Or twisted, turned & exagerated into something that it was never meant to be by someone who should know better. Good job I'm not fattist. -
There are tugbar screwholes (at least there are on the scratchplate) so it could just have been moved
Doh! I'll have to get Hubble to make me a new pair of lenses, but now that you mention it that scratchplate would have discoloured by now too.
No idea about the period specific details, but the condition of the neck and tuners is jarringly off from the condition of the body and hardware which looks way too new and shiny, and no pics of the relevant date stamps from the neck/pocket/pots.
^ this the tuners especially look like a determined relic job + while being no expert I think in 1969 they were still on tug-bars ratrher than thumb-rests.
Howdy folks, new to this forum. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of packaging and organising delivery of large items like bass combos and cabs? Don't know where I would get a box big enough! Cheers
It's surprising how many companies there are around that just make cardboard boxes in many varying sizes. I bought a box "off the peg" from one such, which handily also sold huge sacks of polystyrene quavers, both very cheap, IIRC £10 for both. Double boxed the amp with the bought box on the outside and as much polystyrene as I could get in. Done in twice, one was a valve head UK to Australia, the other was UK to USA.

Genz Benz Shuttle - STOLEN..Found..gone again..now back home :)
Big_Stu replied to rogerds's topic in General Discussion
The chap / chapess who bought it did so in good faith and it is possible, indeed, that the seller believed they were the rightful owner - in which case, although originally stolen the question of actual ownership now is really complicated (i used to think that the person it was stolen from still retained a legal right to it - not necessarily the case apparently!)
It's one of the differences between English and Scots law. Buying north of the border in genuine "good faith" puts you in a strong position. -
Saw her as guest/support on the Stones No Security tour (1999-ish??). She was/is stunning both in looks and artistry, I was front row and centre at the time. When she first walked on she explained that she'd just cropped her hair as a reaction to being dumped. Then laughed that she knew it was a dumb thing to do, she received a huge cheer and could do no wrong from there.
I was listening to Focus by Cynic earlier, and like every time I listen to that album, I smelled amonia. This is because the first time I heard the album, my mum was having her hair coloured and so there was a smell of amonia in the house. Truth be told, it's not the most pleasant association to have with a great record, but there it is nonetheless, does anyone else have pieces of music that evoke strong, specific memories?
This theme tune actually tastes of cocoa & toast with strawberry jam on - because it used to be on straight after bath-time of a Sunday night when I was a little kid. I can actually taste it every time I hear it........... https://www.youtube....h?v=eqONgYHYo88
Oh yes, Sh1ttyLink. Anyway I was expecting a parcel. This particular time I wasn't in. They left no card (I found all this out later). Now usually when you get a card it tells you they will try again tomorrow unless you phone. As I didn't get a card I had no idea they were going to try the next day. They tried again the next day (I wasn't in) and left no card again. The first I know about any of this is when the seller emails me that the package has been returned to him after two failed delivery attempts. Naturally I phoned CityLink to say I never got a card through the door. I was told (hold on to your hats) that it is their policy not to put cards through addresses that are flats for security reasons.
I had an urgent delivery direct to a client last month, got an email from the supplier saying "CL had tried to deliver, no-one to sign for, carded & returned to depot, will retry the next day". I gave the reception a right rollicking & they accepted it was an unlucky coincidence that they must have been to the loo for 2 minutes, no other possibility. The same thing happened the next day but that was an essential delivery so something had to happen. When I called their reception again to ask "wtf?" their security guy came on the phone and said "We've got 16+ CCTV cameras here, not only has there been NO couriers in this area this morning there hasn't been any within the approach roads either." I phoned CL and as I held they checked their trucks GPS and confirmed that that was the case. It still took God knows how many calls before the delivery came back the same day - allegedly with a different driver - and with 5 minutes spare. It seems to be that they often use private couriers themselves for small items, with obviously varying degrees of professionalism. -
I found the service in Sam Ash to be really poor. There was much walking to be done I feel like we covered a couple of hundred miles by foot. Also all of the taxi drivers were lunatics. Interesting places but I'm not sure I am in any rush to head back there.
Welcome to the NYC experience. Shame that Manny's is no more, that was worth a trip all alone. I went into Times Sq HMV having watched "Dusk Till Dawn" that morning (it was the breakfast TV film ) I asked a uniformed assistant "where do you keep your movie soundtrack CDs please?" to which she replied, with the Jerry Springer hand in the air and the jutted jaw "Do I look like information??". Also - out for dinner with friends one evening - the waiter came back to the table - TWICE! - to complain his tip wasn't high enough. One section in the guidebook I bought was on "how much to tip & to who"........taxi drivers 20%, your room maid $10 a day & a scale on restaurants depending on how good - or bad the service was (even if it was bad you tip! ) etc. I loved it & enjoyed playing the game.

Another Richer Sounds story. I still have a small plastic disc with a rubber washer inside it that clamps your record to the turntable. I got it from the 99p bin at their Edinburgh branch. It makes ALL the difference! At the same time - I also bought - but never tried out, a green marker pen, which - apart from the label on it - was identical to any other green marker pen that you'd see in WHS. BUT this one you were supposed to draw around the outside edge of your CD to (IIRC) stop the laser beam bouncing out of the side of the disc when playing and therefore pick up more of the data/sound I think this was at around the same time that Tomorrow's World said that sticking a CD in your freezer over-night made it play better.

Shielding - copper tape on scratchplate?
Big_Stu replied to Lozz196's topic in Repairs and Technical
Fender went to the trouble of splattering some shielding paint in the cavities of my MIM Jazz bass. They missed a few sections. No good.
You can buy small bottles of the stuff at Maplins to finish the job with. My active custom crackled like hell when I got it due to the all over rear scratchplate. Conductive piant earthed to the bridge stopped it. -
I've got a permanent two inch scar on my wrist, from when my cat "Barney" - half Maine Coon - launched himself at my ex Father-in-law's Retriever which had had the audacity to come into "his" back garden. I caught Barney in mid-air with all four of his legs flailing with his massive claws extended. I think I was lucky to just get the one scar, and it bled for ages! He was a big lad!!
I've still got the hi-fi I bought in 1995 and it sounds a treat... if it ain't broke, etc... and I'm a skinflint, too.
That's the year I bought my Marantz CD deck, £379 well spent, less discount for cash
Hifi hasn't changed that much in the last twenty years or so, Stu. If you had a system that sounded really good in the early 1990's , chances are it is still competitive with what is about today, contrary to what a lot of magazines and hifi retailers will try and tell you . The 1990's was the Golden Age of two channel audio. Since then, like my body shape , it's all gone downhill.
Funny you should say that, I almost entirely changed my hi-fi from '95 to around 2000. Still got the boxes off them all . Since then my only new stuff has been a DAB radio - Xmas pressy off my son and the solid oak unit that the decks all sit on - I've heard tell that such a unit makes ALL the difference - silver interconnects Bah!! I downloaded the manuel for the record deck after I lost the original; it clearly states that the shelf for it should be bolted to a solid wall to avoid distortion. SWMBO used her power of veto though
