Anyone gigging in Edinburgh Feb 9th to 11th?
Big_Stu replied to Bassman Sam's topic in General Discussion
No listings for Feb as yet.
No, can't see anything mainstream listed as yet, I don't live there anymore so you may get a local BC-er coming in with ideas. Binkies does have something on most nights & it's a decent enough venue. Depends what you're into and whereabouts you're staying. Or - you may have to settle for something more touristy..........like the Witchery Tour http://www.tripadvis...h_Scotland.html -
Anyone gigging in Edinburgh Feb 9th to 11th?
Big_Stu replied to Bassman Sam's topic in General Discussion
My favourite place for regular bands most nights was Whistle-Binkies. It's easily found, directly opposite the Ibis Hotel, just off the Tron crossroads where the Royal Mile joins South Bridge. Loads of eating places around there too, nothing fancy but plenty variety. -
Anyone out there using them, or know where I can find used
is that TWO [s]trouser-flappers[/s] Mudbuckers on that?

Strap length: been able to play vs looking cool
Big_Stu replied to col.decker's topic in General Discussion
If it wasn't, all basses and 6 string guitars would be the same shape, and plain wood, and then what would we argue about?
File under "Fender" -
Strap length: been able to play vs looking cool
Big_Stu replied to col.decker's topic in General Discussion
Lowman Pauling of The 5 Royales wore his guitar low in the early 1950s, they were the band which inspired Steve Cropper to start playing. To copy Lowman's style Steve "borrowed" one of his dad's trouser belts to lengthen his guitar strap with. "Ain't nothing new under the sun" as the saying goes. -
............ and they say bassist forums can't do irony, surreal!
Big_Stu that's really interesting. I might print your reply off and take it to a chiropractor, with your permission.
No problem, don't know if it's relevant but I've always seen a sports physio, they seem to have wider experience. Edit: I've also had RSI cured by a physio where my GP wanted to operate on my elbow. The physio (different one to the neck trapped nerve) said that the RSI was caused by three tendons in my fore-arm fusing together due to too much bass practise. Using her fingers deep between my arm muscles she separated them. Yes, it was painful, but as both of the physios said, "it's a damn site better than being cut open & often having symptoms operated on rather than the cause".
A while ago I decided to go short scale due to issues with my hands - main issue being that I'm losing the feeling in my left hand pinky
From another forum, my answer.......... Feels like it went to sleep. I've been to the Dr. ....... but it didn't help. ................Has anyone ever had something like this? Yeah, I've had exactly the same thing; actually little finger and ring finger next to it. Same story from the Dr too. I had a regular physio to see due to back problems I had so went to see him, he was an awesome expert in his field. He grabbed my wrist, "So if I press here that's sore right?" "YAAAAAAAA-HAAAAAAA!!" "Same here?" (at my elbow) "Same here?" (at my shoulder) "Hmm", he prodded the back of my neck, "you've got mis-aligned C5 and C6, causing a trapped nerve". I had to lie down and he twisted and turned my neck, then a couple of presses and pops. "You should feel a tingle in your fingers in about 30 seconds and then start to get feeling back in your fingers about a minute after that". I could have set my watch to what he said. No problems since, the guy's a genius AFAIC. If you know or can get recommended a good sports physio then see them. maybe your local sports team has an open clinic night for the public, many do.

DR Strings in a Manchester/North West - where?
Big_Stu replied to Muzz's topic in General Discussion
"Johnny Roadhouse" used to stock a wide range of strings but it's over a year since I was last in. -
Used to stay in Edinburgh. My lad's band have played everywhere from 13th Note to King Tut's (or whatever they're called now). Is McCormack's still around? I once turned down a black Gibson V bass for £199 at Merchant because it was medium scale

Sexism in Music - Infuriating Things People Say to Women Musicians
Big_Stu replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Quite. You should also try being on the receiving end of the current mrs discreet's death-kick in the bollocks.
IME that's what you get when you're playing at wibbly-wobbly; when you should be listening intently with a concentrating look on your face and nods at appropriate times. -
Sexism in Music - Infuriating Things People Say to Women Musicians
Big_Stu replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
My other half's degree is in a male dominated industry. She wasn't quite hounded out, more just largely ignored, credit taken by men for her discoveries, work, etc. She now has a very successful business coaching women to be independent in a male environment. Shows women how to develop their death-stare, that kind of thing . I've just helped her write her first book on a relevant area of her coaching. Then I patted her on her little head and said "well done". The plaster comes off Tuesday - and they should be discharging me on Wednesday. -

I fell in love with a drummer I danced with once................... on the tour of the album, I danced next to her when the support act was on; she had two roadies as minders - but it counts dammit! -
He's still here - but Lemmy glimpses Old Father Time
Big_Stu replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
I'm reliably informed that the large white hose in front of Lemmy at a few gigs recently is an oxygen feed for him. Kinda glad he's given up the Marlboro's then! Also JD sales have plummeted since he decided to cut back in that direction too! -
The garage is ....................... single brick construction. My part is lined with plasterboard (stuck on walls, and two layers screwed to rafters
If you really mean single brick then you've got a long way to go. That's far too thin a barrier; plasterboard "stuck" to it won't make much difference. You'd need - at least - to build an internal wall. If you mean concrete breeze-block walls then they're great for cavity wall insulation. Loft insulation up above. (Done it recently, most DIY places will have deals on just now). Rather than high wattage heaters, liquid fuel etc, you used to be able to get electric powered, low wattage oil filled tubular heaters - for frost prevention in greenhouses. For whatever reason they're not as easy to find as they were, but I have a couple of 60watt heated electric towel rails which work the same way. They don't cost much to run & have a large area putting out warmth. The condensation is caused by extreme temperature changes. Caused by either/both your equipment and your body's presence creating heat & then dropping down to nothing when you eventually leave the room to cool down. You need to make the inside as constant a temperature as possible, using a heat source that costs will cost you, to keep it going more or less permanently because you're losing too much heat thru the thin walls - and as has already been said, through the floor. You're adapting a building that wasn't designed for the purpose you're putting it too, it's not easy - and not quick.

Smallest and Grottiest Venues you've played!
In a rock covers band in the late 90s, we played a pub in Bonnyrigg near Edinburgh. The "bouncer" was in his late 70's, we were crammed in a corner booth with the drummer sitting on the booth couch rather than a drum seat, and the toilets were immediately to our right and everyone had to walk in front of the band to get to them. About half way through the first set the bar staff came rushing over to us telling us to stop playing. We didn't think we playing as bad as that - the reason ? two women were having a cat fight at the bar. classy !
The Calderwood -
Didn't Phil Manzanera play Eric when Jack did the Cream songs?
I think it was his (Manzanera's) idea to do the whole thing; there's an hour long intro programme to it called "Guitar Legends", where they give a top flamenco player a Les Paul + stack to try out for the first time - he looks awestruck! Cropper takes a big part in it too IIRC; tells the story of when he struggled to find an intro to "Knock On Wood" so he played "Midnight Hour" backwards, "It's just joining the dots man". I'd never have dreamt when I saw it back then that I'd end up boozing & swapping emails with the guy.
.........the night that they had Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Brian May, Nuno Bettencourt and others on. Doubt it's lasted well.... Not thought to look for it on the tube.
That's on there too. It seems to be a demo of the uploaders skills at converting video to digital.

From '91 - '92 during a very rough two years, two things lifted me. One was discovering the incredible Wolfstone; the other was seeing the opening night of "Guitar legends" at the Seville Expo '92. That night I "discovered" the awesome sound of Albert Collins & the incredible stamina and showmanship of a 65 year old Bo Diddley; both of them sadly no longer with us. I've often searched and hoped that the package would be released on DVD - since I genuinely wore out the video-tape I had of it.......... but someone has had the good sense to eventually put it on Youtube - in excellent clarity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IVbJa6LiwI Hosted by Dave Edmunds & Steve Cropper, featuring Robert Cray, Albert Collins, Bo Diddley & BB KIng it's a magical hour & a half. I have vague memories of the jazz night (IIRC) featuring Jack Bruce do a great version of "City Of Gold" but also showing he doesn't know the words to "Can't Turn You Loose". The host says that's still to come. Enjoy.
Depends whether it is an expensive laminated one, or a cheapo vistaprint* one. *Other business card makers are available.
A 12pt one mentioned above is about 260gsm, which is puny for a business card. Should really be a minimum of 350gsm or 16pt.

Unless a band comes on and launches straight into their opener from the entrance music I've never seen the point. Having something gee up the crowd only to have the pause take them down again while leads are plugged, tuning adjustments made, hi-hats tested etc makes it a non-entrance. Assuming your band doesn't do that are you looking for impact, obscure but tasteful (good call with Carmen btw), contrast or a mixture of everything?

He'd have got away with it if he hadn't worn his costume's hat.......... "Full Scale Musicals & Pantomimes at the Zazz Theatre, Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne & Wear Snow White & The Seven Dwarves, December 2012" The fact he's appearing on camera means he's not Bashful, bit of a stupid thing to do so he could be Dozy...........

Not plagiarised from Basschat, just by coincidence the same things get a mention..... Just a heads up that this months Guitar & Bass magazine has an extensive article on guitar theft, Music Ground is mentioned a fair bit, no real answers but the microchip tracer get a mention. Also a good and in-depth review of the Gryphon bass with an average score of 17/20 & 87% overall. That is all.
