1. Birmingham show next week. Saw them at last year's Sonisphere as well, they were great then and I'm looking forward to it
2. Pretty fantastic, despite the major setback of the guitarist breaking a string and not having any spares on him ¬¬ It took him ten minutes to track down another guitar to lend, during which time me and the drummer jammed our way through various genres of music - improv being something we've never done before - in the middle of a punk set That said, apparently one person told my friend that the guitarist ought to go offstage more often, so I'm not sure how to take that feedback
3. Fantastic, I'll make sure to pick up a copy
4. I've played one sober gig with my current band, and that was pretty rubbish, couldn't get the adrenaline going (plus my hands tends to tense up between five and ten minutes of playing without a few drinks to loosen me up). Every time I've tried to go sober since then to see any difference, my mates keep buying me drinks ¬¬
5. Played at the Giffard in Wolverhampton - went pretty well, a couple of songs fell a little flat while others got a fair bit of applause. Had an embarrassing moment when I tried to go and dance with my mate in front of the stage while playing and pulled my lead out (the input socket on the amp was a tad loose)
6. I used to practise - I'd do whatever I felt like while practising a song at home, allowed me to get more comfortable moving around with the bass. Then my neighbour started complaining about the noise, I had to start wearing headphones, and now I can't move about without them falling off Couple of things I wish I'd practised before trying, though. Like standing on top of my amp during the slow bit of California Uber Alles - there's no time like onstage to find out how damn wobbly that thing gets when someone climbs on it...
7.
Cee Lo Green? SOUL
Aye, not a massive fan but there are some fantastic basslines in his work. Though Gorrilaz probably wins out for me
8. Reminds me of Peaches a tad, prefer Dead Ringer's riff though... Loved these guys when I first heard them, playing on the same bill as em on Friday...some great basslines. Bit of Krist Novoselic never hurt
9. Never had a really bad gig that we actually played - though one time my old band went to play the River Rooms in Stourbridge on an open mic night. Some yobs had put solvent in the lock, so we were waiting around for the staff to try and get in for about forty-five minutes. They had the idea of heating the lock up and pushing the key through the glue whilst it was unstable - of course, they then tried to unlock it whilst it was heated, causing it to snap off in the lock In the end we had to go back the next week. Worst gig I've actually played was probably at the Subside Bar in Birmingham on a Monday night - none of the staff had a clue what was going on, we were expecting to have someone tell us where to set up and sort us out - what we got was someone handing us and the headline band a box of leads (after a two-hour wait!) and leaving us to it. After all that we were pretty fed up and unable to put much energy into it - especially since our audience was about five friends and the bar staff Sound was pretty bad too, couldn't hear myself at all - my E string was out of tune for the first four songs and I didn't realise
10. Either 'All Day and All of the Night' or 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.
Dont think there are any bass tab books for the Stranglers mate, See this thread Heres a good place for them Stranglers tab site Dont rely on them too much though, or you'l soon be thinking of the fretts as 1, 2, 3, 4, etc instead of F. F#' G' G#, etc
Agreed, that is a fantastic site for them. There's quite a few that sound slightly off to my ear, but it's easy enough to figure out the rest. Definately helped with learning the Genetix solo.
12. Metallica's Trapped Under Ice, doing that with two fingers bloomin killed - hence why I don't play it any more
13. I'm exactly the same. Always worked for me.
14. Pretty sure it was Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll by Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Great song.
15. Lots of practise - I used to play it with my fingers, was getting closer all the time but never really got it spot on before quitting the band I played it with. You'll get there eventually/
16. Green Day - American Idiot album - not their best, I must admit, but definately a bold step in a different direction for them. One of the albums that got me interested in music in general tbh.
17. At home I'm really enjoying 'Down in the Sewer' by the Stranglers - not quite as tight with it as I should be, but improving a bit each time and have a ball every time I play it With the band, I always love doing California Uber Alles by Dead Kennedys and Career Opportunities by the Clash - simple enough basslines, but playing them never seem to get repetitive or boring. Plus we usually seem to have more energy in Career Opportunities than almost any other song in the set, which is always a blast.
18. Didn't get me into bass, but very much responsible for the way I see/play it now. Too many great moments to mention; Sleazy, Peaches, Genetix solo, Down in the Sewer, the end of Curfew, the intro to 5 Minutes, and so many others.
19. I can't really think of anything, the worst I play are songs where the bass just plays root notes of the guitar - and given that it's punk, it still works and has enough speed to keep me properly interested. Even if I do get bored playing the same note for a while, I'll just liven it up a notch by hammering onto the note from the next fret down every bar or so.
20. I practise it from time to time, not something I'm all that comfortable with though so I stick to just using a pick or upstrokes with both fingers for songs as fast as DITS.
21. I really can't reach any conclusion on this to be honest. There's amazing instrumental pieces I like that work fine without vocals. There's songs that consist of a bloke playing a guitar while singing that are brilliant without other instruments. There are songs without guitar that are great. Ultimately, it depends on the song and what atmosphere the writer/musicians are trying to convey within it. For me, a lot of what I get from songs comes from listening to how all the instruments work together. Though I voted Triangle because any song it gets used in instantly becomes amazing
22. I cannot state how much I love our drummer. He doesn't have 100% perfect time - he'll sometimes speed up during songs - but not to a really noticable degree. He can do great fills, has loads of power and energy in his playing, and can always come up with perfect drumming to suit our originals - and he's a damn sound bloke to boot. Only played with two other drummers, glad neither of them were bad.
23. Was just listening to the UFO song...brilliant group...
24. Will be ordering this one soon and have a Motorhead night in with my mate Hobo when it arrives
25.
Golden Brown by The Stranglers for me. It's a dodgy time signature.
True. I get it after a bit of practise, but it always throws me off the first time I try playing it in a while.
