I was about to say the same. No amount of abuse seem to trouble old peavey and trace stuff. Reasonable to good tone, volume to spare, tiny prices
Yeah the paevey TNT combo is very loud. I borrowed a mates, it was around a 100 watts and was a beast.
Did you sell your 400+, Marten? I loved that amp. With the Mesa 4x10, awesome sound! Matty
Yeah i am afraid so, i sold the 400+ and powerhouse and got a M6 carbine 2x12 combo. That is an awesome sounding amp, still weighs a ton, but is far more versatile. cheers thebassman
Your recommendation wouldn't have anything to do with your name would it?!
I suppose it is yeah, i don't own the company though These amps are seriously underated though. I used mine for about 10 years, for all styles of music, and it is still going strong. I still have it, and would never part with it, but i am now loving that Mesa sound.
I'm looking to upgrade my amp and cab to something a bit more meaty but the price of Ampeg's is too much for me to bear. I like the bass sounds of 90's punk bands like Rancid, Distillers, anti-flag and would like to replicate it. Anyone got any ideas of what would be a good alternative?
I used to play quite a lot of those songs in the 90's, I always used my old Fender Bassman 135 with a beaten up old Laney 4x10. You can get a great raw, punk sound with that combination. I think it's down mainly to the amp, any 4x10 would do I guess. It's good as Bassmans are pretty unliked so you should be able to pick one up for a steal.
I have thought of that but they're very hard to come by
There is a guy selling a fender baseman 135 on here. Should fit most of your requirements.
Just a quick Q...i have an AG500sc....is it going to be alot of difference in tone if im running a passive Fender Jazz through the amp with the Active bass button depressed? or should i be keeping the amp in the passive setting? any thoughts?
You should have more gain available in the passive setting. Active is normally a -5db pad.
still a newcomer at this..... so if i should breach any etiquette - forgive me and let me know (politely please ) important decisions have to be made throughout life.... when to get married, when to buy a house, start a family...... and when to sell a Fender Bassman Its time to move on so it has to go
Don't do it man, you WILL regret it. I've had mine for over 20 years and have nearly sold it a few times, then i plug it in and remember why i have had it for so long.

You can't beat an all valve head... I'm afraid!
Your opinion is BULL$H!T!!! It's what comes before the amp that's important and makes more difference than anything. Sh1t in equals sh1t out. Worth remembering that you're not allowed to toggle with the EQ on the PA so your 'bad sound' could be down to that and also your bass being crap.
Ummm, i thought we were all saying that everyones opinion is valid. Also my bass is a Stingray.......... so obviously not crap. -
On a more serious note regarding tone, I have all ways approached amplification as exactly that. I want it to make what I put into it sound louder. An amplifier doesn't have 'tone', it's what it does with your tone that people are talking about. Some amplifiers #ahem# are actually very poor at doing their proper job since they totally mangle the sound you put in to the point that no matter what goes in you all ways get the same thing out. And who wants to sound like everyone else?
I don't totally agree with that, and no i don't want a fight If this was the case we would all turn up to gigs with a bass and lead and go straight into a big PA rig. I have had to do this in the past, when my old amp gave up the ghost at the wrong time, it wasn't a nice experience. The amp may not be the total "tone", but it definatley colours the sound. As you can see from my signature i still have my old Bassman 135, which sounds fantastic. But for my main rig i have now changed from a 400+ all valve/ powerhouse 4x10 to a valve state combo, which i am loving. It is far more versatile for finding different tones, more portable and looks pretty cool too. It also has more power than my old rig. cheers thebassman -
Flats on Rays is GREAT!
Never tried anything except for ernie balls on my five string. I must say I have always loved the sound. What is the difference with using flats? Just curious as I am always willing to try out new stuff. Cheers Thebassman
Hi peeps, what is the required gear / spray to use that would cure a crackling pot on an amp, and why do amp have this problems? Even new amps like my Mark Bass does it, I then have to wind the gain pot on an off a few times to clear it but I would like a more permanent solution. Is there a recommended spray for this? Cheers
I have always used Deoxit gold g5, i ain't cheap but i works really well.
Sure - Don't see why not. Does anyone know of any local (scotland) and reasonable amp techs? Need this fixed!
Has anyone been messing with the effects loop control, inside at the back. When I first got mine I had a similar problem. Try Turning it down to zero.
Hmmm, yep - roll down the input on your bass a touch and then increase the master volume - does it still distort?
+1, you will have to decrease the gain on your Amp untill the clipping light stays off. Boosting the mids on the amp might help for an apparant volume increase and you might be able to find a frequency range not being filled ny the drummer or Guitards. good luck
Hi there, I have eventually managed to get my hands on a used RH450 for a great price! The thing that's bothering me is that the preset buttons, shift and mute buttons have all got cracks across them. The shift button has actually split in two parts. They still sit in the amp securely and work as they should, but the plastic is obviously defective. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Most importantly, can it be rectified. I would really appreciate any help that can be given. Cheers guys, Mario.
Sounds like sub standard build quality. Is it still under warranty?

So, what smaller/lighter cabs can do the same as a Mesa 1516EV?
thebassman replied to Beedster's topic in Amps and Cabs
You're not helping much
Sorry mate, I just remember how awesome these cabs are. I now use a Mesa m6 combo that has 2x12 with a horn, this does sound pretty cool also. There is just something about Mesa cabs, must be the extra volume of the housing. -
If you have one, I'm sure you can understand why I'm asking! I love the sound, and love the fact that with its 15", 10", 2x6" drivers and a tweeter it's like a top-end hifi speaker on steroids, but it really is an absolute monster to move around, and scares the hell out of sound guys at the type of venues we play. Of course, if there's nothing else that'll do the same job, I might just by another and play my hifi through them! Cheers Chris
I used to own one of them a few years ago. I sold it and have regretted it ever since. Still running a Mesa though -
I've just got a new 4x10 cab with a tweeter but I've read online that using distortion on a cab with a tweeter can damage it because of the high frequencies. I'm just wondering if this is true and to what extent the distortion damages it. Thanks, Alli
I have used distortion pedals with lots of different cabs, all with tweeters, for years and they have not been damaged. Sounds like rubbish to me.
Out of curiosity, how much would cost (roughly) to get this amp serviced and replace the tubes and that? Thanks
All depends how much you want to pay 6L6 tubes are anywhere from about £12 each up to £50 each, you need 4. Pre-amp tubes are from about £8 up to £40 each. I just replaced the whole lot with EHX, sounds great. As for servicing, is there a particular problem? Mine was running really bad a couple of years ago, so i replaced all the caps, resistors, diodes etc even ended up making my own component mount boards as the wax boards were in a right state and full of moiusture. I had to then repair the enclosure and re-tolex it. It now sounds and looks awesome, cost me way more than it's worth though, it kind of became an obsession.. as these projects do cheers thebassman
great amps mine's a 79 i think - eyes left!
Just a shame I don't get to use mine that much, I tend to use the boogie most of the time. I have owned it for about 20 years and would never part with it.
hi, can anyone verify for me what the pre-amp tubes are in the Bassman 135? there's two together and one stands alone - thanks for any help
1x12at7, 2x7025 (12ax7). What you got mines a 1978.
Hello all, bit of a warning and info wanted here. I have a SWR redhead which uses a 12ax7 (ecc83) in the pre amp. The redhead has had the valve it came with as new for 10 years with no problems. so thought it was time for a change. After a bit of a scoot around i opted for the ones on Ebay, and got a pair, as here.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mesa-Boogie-12AX7-EC...=item35a5084551 I replaced my old one, and very first gig, was a sound like loud electrical fault first on louder played notes, then all the time, this was later found to be the valve VERY microphonic, and any amount of vibration would set it off, so on inspection when out it all rattley inside like a spring is bouncing against the inner case when shaken/flicked on closer visual inspection the plates dont look very well supported, and just look altogether flimsey. I dont even want to try the other one !!! Are these REAL mesa Boogie ones ?? The valvs say on them, "ENGL tube power ecc83" see pic should they not say Mesa Boogie ??. So to the point, has anyone tried these and had problems ?
I have used this supplier before, not for those particular valves though. I bought some EHX valves and both the supplier and the valves were great, might have just got damaged in the post. Could be worth contacting the supplier to get an exchange item. I don't want to start a valve war, but i wouldn't buy the Mesa branded valves anyway, I have heard all Mesa do is take a standard chinese valve and put their name on it. I normally stick to EHX and have never had a problem with them, thats using them in my old Mesa 400+ and current Bassman 135. Although i did buy a NOS cryo phillips valve for my Mesa Carbine, cost me about £40 each , but it only takes one. cheers thebassman
