Ebay is the way to go for these little blighters, I got a mint condition one for £35 delivered a few months ago. I really like it, especially running it into a BDDI, but have no way of recording sound clips unfortunately. Luckily he's on the ball ^
I paid full price for one of these about 5 years ago, worth every penny though. I tried lots of other bass distortion and they all dropped out in volume with a full band set up. Not this though. It gives you a wall of distortion and you can still hear the Bass notes. Awesome pedal.

Mesa / Boogie M Pulse 12AX7 tube replacement help?
thebassman replied to absentmindeduk's topic in Amps and Cabs
Mine is a walkabout scout 112. Same set up as the M-pulse 600 just smaller MOSFETs. It uses 2x 12AX7s in the preamp stage (same as the M-pulse 600 and Carbine series). The change was hard to describe, but if I said it makes it richer does that make sense...? Its sound was a bit clinical (hi-fi) to me before the valve change now it seems deeper, and thicker without feeling muddy or distorted. My gitar'd who is a complete tone freek (tone is everything!) just said "wow" and thought it had a voodoo hex cast upon it. EVERYTHING else in the chain was the same so its not down to a combination of changes. The best way I can descirbe is relating it to coffee... do you drink yours black? If so you'll undertsand this. std= Nescafe 12AX7SP = Columbian ground coffee from a cafetiere. Oh and I got mine from hotrox nottingham. Thank for the detailed reply. I didn't even realise my carbine had 2 pre amp valves, I thought it had 1. I might give them a try, just for an experiment. Cheers thebassman
-
Mesa / Boogie M Pulse 12AX7 tube replacement help?
thebassman replied to absentmindeduk's topic in Amps and Cabs
I does make a difference what you put in. I recently swapped mine for the upgrade 12AX7SP Mesa valves and the difference was huge from the std valves. You kinda get what you pay for - or you might get lucky. You dont need to change them just beacause they havent been changed - you could just be throwing money away. If you want to experiment with the tone then by all means play. Always have a spare set incase one dies (which you'll know about when it happens ) My guitard has had the same set of valves in his g'tar amp for 25 years without so much as a pop! 12AX7s are not the type of valve that needs 'matching' - that is normally (as stated above) output stage valves that work better if they are bias matched.
Hi the burpster what Mesa amp are you talking about and in what way was the difference Huge? I only ask as i have just bought my first valve state amp, M6 carbine combo, and was thinking about swapping the pre-amp tube for a 12AX7SP. Where did you get yours from? cheers thebassman -
Mesa / Boogie M Pulse 12AX7 tube replacement help?
thebassman replied to absentmindeduk's topic in Amps and Cabs
So would I have to swap them both for a 'matched pair' (if such exists for 12AX7's) or can I swap them individually? Short of buying like 3-4 different kinds of valve, theres no way I can test them really, which puts me off a little...
Have a look on Watford valves, they have lots of valve test reports available, link here http://www.watfordvalves.com/cgi-bin/docum...estreport_2.pdf. Not sure how much difference changing the pre-amp valve makes though. I always go for EH or Harma in my old/ current boogies. Mesa do pick the best suited valves for there amps from EH or GT and re-brand them. cheers thebassman -
Tried lots of stuff, and DESPERATELY want an M6 Carbine combo (can't justify it!), but am VERY happy with my 1-12 4ohm Walkabout Scout. It has tone to die for  and will shake beer glasses off a bar if you need it to.... I have a feeling tho' the M6 would rearrange internal organs! FWIW - OBBM uses top quality components and has oodles of experience putting them together. I have won my G'tard over with the same kit (assembled by me) and previously he was shelling out on Whirlwind gear ... (very pretty but waaay over priced!).
I take it you have seen from my signature, i have a M6 carbine 2x12 combo. I have just "down graded" from a powerhouse 4x10 and 400+ for a smaller set up. This amp is absolutely awesome, the best amp i have ever owned, but yes it is loud.......... don't know about shake glasses off the bar, i will turn them back into sand. I cannot rate this amp highly enough, i have a stingray 5 and thought i had the missing G string problem. Well with this amp every single note and tone is there, far more Hi-Fi than my 400+, that set up was loud but very muddy. I will give OBBM a go when i have sorted out what cables i need.
Dave they just make a bit pf a pop in my experience...... (well they do through my Mesa!) Oh and incoming PM, I need some more bits... As for PW cables...... sorry but they are cack......! For what they cost buy proper kit from Dave above (OBBM) for a wee bit more and feel the difference between over priced shoite components and proper components put together properly.
another Mesa fan, pleased to meet you, what do you play through? I have definately gone off pw cables now. I will checking out obbm's web site and placing an order asap. Cheers thebassman.
TBH I don't trust those muting plugs. I wouldn't provide opportunities for silencing your bass to a tiny little spring thingy if I were you.
I just invested in a nice new tu3 pedal which does my muting. I am just a gadget freak, so was taken in by the hype.
obbm is a member here who makes and distributes excellent quality leads for great prices. No marketing BS or fancy descriptions, just top quality leads. Here's his site: http://www.bassic.co.uk/ I replaced my failing Planet Waves leads with a couple of obbm leads and they are much better, cost about the same too.
I see they do the muting connectors. Does anyone know if they work with stingray 5 basses. The neutrik site says they do not work with some active bass guitars.
Not had good Planet Waves experience here either. I never asked them to replace leads on the lifetime guarantee, because it was always in my mind mid-gig: was that me or is the lead dodgy? Never really looked back from hearing about OBBM on this forum
Sorry dude, i am newish to these forums, what is "OBBM"?
funny this comes up there is another thread about pete cornish cables around here at the mo. The op used cornish's cables to replace a set of planet waves and found a marked improvement. wonder if there's a connection ? T
I did see the other guys thread about Pete Cornish cables, is there a link or price list for these cables.

Hi i am about to start playing lots of local pubs again, with their dodgy old wiring. Does anyone use or can recommend any mains power conditioners to protect my shiny new amp. It is an upright combo, so don't really want a rackmount version. cheers thebassman

I have been a real big fan of planet waves cables for quite a while. Something strange has happened though, i have been using a standard cable, circuit breaker cable and patch lead, all planet waves, for about 3-4 years. I have played these through my Bassman 135 and Mesa 400+ and all seemed well. I recently bought a Mesa M6 carbine combo and was starting to get really worried with horrible sound spikes and intermittent back groung noise, this was driving me mad. Anyway, with the process of elimination i have had to swap out all of the planet waves cables, one at a time for my trusty old Whirlwind cables and a home made patch cable and all is working great. I don't quite understand how this is even possible, but i will not be using PW again. anyone else had any problems. cheers thebassman
Yeah I know. The supplied cable is speaker cable but very thin, and not what I want for my 500watt amp ! All sorted now, thanks to OBBM
Most good music shops will make them up for you, you can choose your cables and plugs also.
thanks for the help guys!, yeah 'Watford Valves' are doing a deal on a set of HARMA Cryo 5881's for £193! not bad atall. Are they good valves?, or should I get JJ TESLA 6L6GC's??
harma are a good choice, just get the non cryogenic type. I used these in my 400+ and they sound as good as originals. Watford were doing a matched 12 set for £144.

No one knows. Qotsa got some nice 5 string stuff and a few bass solos, what more can you ask for, shame dave grohl wasn't drumming for my band.
I've picked up what I think is a bargain, a MAG 210 300w combo for £150 s/h. It's in pretty decent condition. I have a few questions: 1) It's been rewired to 4 ohms internally, rather than 8. Obviously this means it's using the full 300w all the time (potentially good), but I can't use an extension cab (potentially bad, but I don't currently have one anyway). Do people have this sort of thing done often or is it unusual? Does anyone know what wattage it would be at 8 ohms, the manual I've browsed online doesn't say. 2) I also notice that it doesn't have the usual blue ashdown drivers, is this a sign they are replacements, or are some older ashdowns fitted with different drivers? Could this be connected to the rewiring to 4 ohms? 3) Reading on here, lots of people seem to like to put their 2x10s vertically rather than horizontally. Will I be alright turning the combo on it's side for this? 4) Was it a bargain? Cheers, Andy
I would of thought the speakers have been replaced to handle the full 300watts, you might want to check the wattage written on the speakers otherwise you will blow them. The original speakers wouldn't have been 150 watts each. From the website it looks like an Ashdown MAG 300 head sat on top of a MAG 210T cab, which at 8 ohms looks like a continuous 200 watts. sounds like a good deal at that price.
I did my first proper gig last night with my new TC450 and 2 x 210 TC cabs, and along with our soundman, was mildly disappointed, which really surprised me as at home and in the shop, I was blown away by the sound and couldnt wait to get on stage. The gig was in a fair sized room with high ceilings in a stately home, on a solid floor (no stage), and I was using a Zon Custom bass, but try as we did (and there are still a shedload of control knob combinations we didnt try due to time constraints), we couldnt seem to get rid of a heavy mid bias in the sound without going very "soft and bottomy", which we settled on. I guess it was a combination of the somewhat sterile sound of the Zon, the room itself, the 10" speakers and a lack of familiarity with the amp and cabs, but it wasnt great. I have therefore bought a single 112 TC cab to put under a 210 cab, rather than use 2 x 210 cabs to see if that is any better. What do the panel think of this as a solution? Is it more likely to be a bass/room problem, or something we will resolve when we have used the system more and got used to it, or maybe its the inherent sound of TC systems that I just have to get used to? I love the ergonomics of the amp, and have several other basses I could use that maybe arent as clinical as the Zon, but has anyone had a similar experience?
hi bob sorry to hear you are having problems, I am sure it will work out. These amps get great reviews. I am loving the Mesa boogie fathom btw. Have you received your tc tuner yet! Would be great to hear a user review. Cheers martin
As said, the whole point for me, of a combo is compactness. I'd get a 2x10 combo with a view to be able to up its output by adding another cab. This gives it flexibility and versatility. I'd look to add another 2x10 or maybe a 15 for the louder situations. But..people now do the same thing with lighter 12's.. They run a seperate amp into 1 or 2 1x12's and still get all in the boot of a decent car and can look to around 500w for the rig.
oh yeah, I didn't read the "combo" part. I would still get a 2x12 though. I tried a few 2x10 combos and they seemed a bit too thin sounding for me, I do play 5 string so need lots of bottom end power.
This may have been asked before and I apologise if I am dragging something up that searching threads may answer! I am looking for a combo and have a basic question ... should I go for 1, 2 or 4 speakers. Are there relative merits to each of these? Any guidance from more experienced players would be most appreciated. If I get an answer that relates I can then narrow down the search. (A second question is why does nothing come up in amps & cabs marketplace in the East Midlands ... but that is just frustration on my part!)
I have always been a 4x10 kind of guy, I loved the more punky treble tone you get. But I recently swooped to a 2x12, this is a very good compromise, but in a far more manageable size. All depends on what you are willing/able to carry around.
I think you are looking for Tolex to replace it.
I can send you a link for a good place to buy the Tolex and the adhesive. You might also want to get some corner protectors to save you newly covered box. http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/index.php?language=en i used them when i re-covered my bassman 135........ and it looks awesome.

Just bought a Mesa Boogie Fathom (M6 carbine) 2x12 combo from Bob. Really nice guy and what a collection of gear, better and more informative than most music shops i go to. The combo was in Mint condition. As for the amp i will be writing a review as i am totaly blow away by it, what a fantastic sound. I can not recommend it highly enough, without sounding like i am endorsed by Mesa Boogie. cheers Thebassman
Hi guys, I"ve been looking around for a new amp and I think I've found a good'un. Details are: Hartke HA3500 Head Hartke 210TP Cab Hartke 115TP Cab And the guy is after £500 for the lot. Is this a fair price? Should I put in an offer for less? Should I infact steer completely clear of this kit anyway because it's crap? (I hope not... ) Thanks.
Sounds a fair price, you should always put an offer in for less, people expect it.
