1. Stevie, actually. And my drummer is about to call you for the other and the bass cab.
2. Geoff, I'm not sure how much interest there is for DIY PA cabs on here - not much I suspect. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to do the kind of reportage with photos that others have done, but I'll post a few measurements when I'm done that might be of interest to one or two people.
3.
Irrespective of what they sound like they weight 40KG so why it would even get a mentioned in a thread related to specialist lightweight gear is a mystery to me.
Actually, this thread was about extended delivery delays, broken delivery promises and poor customer service, not about cabinet weight.
4.
I'm not sure where the practical limit sits, but conceptually I favour stiff and as light as possible, to maximise sonic efficiency and reach a point where the resonances are at a high enough frequency that first there is a lot less overall energy to excite them and second damping becomes more effective.
Looks like someone has resurrected this old thread. Stiff, light and heavily damped is a valid approach (no doubt you're thinking of the Celestion SL600 here) that certainly works well for mid frequencies. I think that at bass frequencies, the best approach is as much mass as possible, although brick and concrete don't make for very portable cabs.
Stevie, I'd be very interested to hear more about your K12-alikes. I'm a big fan of those speakers, on another thread a while back I speculated that the moulded cabs sound decent (IMO) because the Q of the material is lower than eg wood - but that alone won't compensate for the loss of efficiency and so I'd guess that the wood ones sound 'tighter' and measure louder. I've also been building some PA cabs, using 9mm birch ply and quite extensive shelf and column bracing. I hope that these will still be pretty stiff (I couldn't lift them if they were 18mm birch! I want to try birch-faced poplar or similar), will get to the point of testing in a couple of weeks.
I have a pair of Celestion TN1230 12- inch drivers (same as in the K12s) and a pair of CDX1-1731 compression drivers (superior model to the one used in the K12s) on P.Audio Nexo-copy horns. The cab is quite compact - about 20 litres - and is made from half inch ply with three-quarter ply for the baffle. Crossover is 1.6/kHz L/R 4th order. The Celestion 12s are very impressive. They go to 2kHz before break-up and are ruler-flat in their passband. The whole system measures plus/minus 1db from 200 to 18kHz, something that I don't think was possible even 10 years ago from mid-market speakers. Somebody at Celestion knows what they're doing. 90 percent of the design work is in the crossover and I'm building that now. I expect they'll be done for Christmas.
5. You might do better with this if you use the word combo in the heading. At first glance it looks like you're just selling a speaker.
6. Interesting. Nice build quality. The drivers look like PR300s, in which case the FH500s will be usefully louder at the bottom end. However, as Pete and co. rightly say, the problem may well lie elsewhere.
7. I was suggesting an alternative to buying a 2 x 15 or adding another cab. It's not really clear to me what the actual problem is. I doubt if any of the Genz cabs are loaded with the 12fh500.
8. If you're prepared to do a bit of research and ask a few questions, your best bet might be to upgrade your drivers to something like the Faital12fh500, assuming you like the Genz cab. These, I believe, are the ones in the top-of-the-range Vanderkleys and probably not a million miles away from what Barefaced is using now: http://www.lean-business.co.uk/eshop/faitalpro-12fh500-8ohm-12-500watt-pa-speaker-p-1174.html You'll be able to sell the drivers that are currently in the cab to reduce the overall cost of the exercise.
9. I fear we might be in for a spate of threads saying: 'It's arrived! Here's a photo of it in my living room."
10.
I've peered through the ports and the little bits you can see inside look hugely tidy.
Usually a good sign.
11. So what's inside these TKS cabs? Does anyone have any pictures of the interiors?
12. 'Clanky' is a good description for the Quarter Pounders. I thought they lost the P-Bass sound. They're loud though.
13.
Just nicked this from the TKS Facebook page - the new 1126's will have a top bar handle instead of a strap handle... nom nom nom!
Almost as nice as this:
14. Well, the cab definitely says ABM on the back plate. I know the ABM range has used both blue and black drivers. Should anyone prefer a blue ABM speaker, I have a spare that I could fit.
15. I just bought this ABM cab on eBay. Unfortunately, the advertiser got his measurements wrong and I thought I was getting the more unusual mini version. What I have is the standard Compact 115 (420mm deep) and it looks relatively new and not very used. It's this one (except that it has the newer, black-cone driver): I've told the seller that his ad was incorrect and that I intend to return it, but to save the hassle of doing so, I'm offering it to Basschatters for a few days just in case someone would like to benefit from the silly price I paid for it. As you may know, they sell for £359 new and regularly fetch £150 on the bay. Collection from Dorchester welcomed, but I can also ship.
16. I'm not sure that someone who has already spent £2,800 on a Bose L1 and is considering buying a second one really "knows what they're doing", but saying so would probably be considered rude - and that wouldn't do.
17. Love it, me.
18. Doesn't anyone need a quality mixer at the moment? I could be interested in some kind of deal with a Markbass LMIII or an Ashdown ABM 15 Compact....
19. I think I need to bump this......
20. I'm surprised I'm having to bump this but I appreciate that money is tight.
21.
Sh*t. Or something that sticks like it . . . . .
I bought some of that last week. One word in the name says it all - and it's not 'sticks' or 'like'. It's supposed to stick to wood. It doesn't.
22. Bought a combo from Rich. Everything went well and it was nicely packed up and sent out quickly. The amp was exactly as described. Deal with confidence.
23. Stuart bought a cab from me. The deal went through really quickly and there was no messing about. A1+++, as they say.
24. I've just had a quick look. This appears to be outstanding. Great production values too. More, please.....
25. 2 x 4 by 8" is 1960s speaker technology.
