1. There's a simple explanation. 51mon is on the right track. When you are close to your speaker you are standing off-axis and you only hear part of your sound: you do not hear the higher frequencies because the dispersion pattern narrows at higher frequencies. Go a few metres from your cab and you hear more HF because you are not so far off-axis. In other words, high frequencies beam and you have to be in the beam to hear them. Importantly, higher frequencies are responsible for the definition of your sound. Once you get further away, what you hear is a combination of direct and indirect sound. The further back you go, the more indirect sound you hear until you arrive at a position where what you are hearing is virtually all indirect sound (bounced off from the walls, ceilings, etc.). Because the off-axis output of a general purpose bass cab rolls off above 1000Hz, its 'power response' or reverberant field response contains very little information above that frequency. Its sound will therefore change in the far field and will become muddy. Yes, that's you (unless you're going through the PA). This is one of the key arguments in favour of using a small diameter midrange driver (or horn loading) to improve the off-axis response. Either that, or go through the PA, which is likely to have been designed with a useful power response.
2.
You're still not understanding what I'm trying to say! I'm not talking about any of those drivers, I've been talking about my search to find a motor that allows me to design a driver based around that magnet and pole pieces that does what I want. This is nothing to do with different brands, companies or factories, it's about specific castings and machined parts which have a certain geometry.
So you've been looking into XBL2?
3. I got them all right and only needed about 3 seconds for each track. But I have very good headphones and enjoy listening to the violin. I doubt very much if I could tell the difference between a 1961 P-Bass and a modern Squire though.
4. They're Canadian - for me, that's almost British!
5. You could save a fair chunk by using the Eminence midrange driver with very little performance hit. It only really starts to make sense if you build your own cab (as long as you see building a cab as a leisure pastime).
6.
The 3012HO is a 'better' (more powerful) driver on paper than the Faital 12PR300, which would be more directly comparable to the Deltalite (2.5" voice coil, similar rated excursion, wattage, broadband sensitivity). But I've not heard the 12PR300, however I have been doing a lot of reading about driver design as well as a lot of listening to speakers, and I think the paper doesn't tell you as much as it seems especially if you go by the usual measures of xmax, wattage, T-S specs and f-response charts. Xmax is an especially over-simplified/over-used measure, that seems to be touted in basscabland as the be-all and end-all when it comes to judging output at high power. For one thing, some drivers behave a lot better beyond 'x-max' than others, and I think that how they start to misbehave differs a lot in audibility/objectionability as well. Smoothness isn't all about the f-response chart either, you can EQ a speaker 'flat' but a good clean PA driver will still sound less coloured than one with poorly suppressed resonances. Comes down to the usual old cliche that you have to let your ears be the judge
I haven't heard the PR300 either but there are enough indicators that it has been built down to a price. Nothing wrong with that if the price savings are being passed on to the customer (and that unit is quite well priced at retail). I didn't mention xmax in particular but yes, I don't find a voice coil overhang of 2mm very impressive at all in a £1,000 bass cabinet. That and the lack of demodulation rings lead me to suppose that they not going to sound great at high volumes. But as you say, the proof's in the listening.
7.
Hi, not sure sorry. This thread may help: http://www.talkbass....725/index3.html Pics on Page 3. Strangely, higher wattage rating cf to the Berg 300W speakers, but then again the Bergs are not standard spec.
They've got their own sticker over the magnet and it claims a slightly higher power rating. It could be the PR300 but more likely they just don't want us to know that they're charging £750 to stick a couple of drivers in a wooden box. I can't say I blame them.
8.
.But that would most probably mean that the 112MNT has a different driver than the 212MNT, which sounds a bit peculiar in my ears. I'm guessing there's an answer in physics, but I can't remember my physics classes at all. Someone in the know hopefully chimes in.
From the specs on their website, Vanderkley seem to be using a 300w and a 600w 12-inch. The 112MNT is rated at 600w - so must have the 600w driver in.
9.
The latest Genz cabs are Faital loaded.
I stand corrected. Would that also be the PR300 then?
10. Faital do make some wonderful drivers (such as the 15FH520), but there is nothing special about the PR300 apart from its upper midrange smoothness. I think it's the Genz Benz that uses the Deltalites. In terms of drivers, that would make Bareface the winner for me with the 3012HO, although not everything is down to the driver.
11. I tried quite a few Jazz pickups in my PJ but was unable to find one that was compatible with the Duncan SPB-1 at the front. Because of their position close to the bridge, they all sounded too thin and weedy, even the Duncan Quarter Pounder. I ended up routing out the hole and putting a humbucker in there. I tried the Duncan alnico MM pickup (which is supposed to sound exactly like a Musicman pu), but that sounded too middy. What worked best was a Delano MM, which sounds like a fat Jazz. Funnily enough, I just bought myself a Delano P-Bass pickup on here and with a bit of luck will end up with a Sandberg California-a-like. At least that's the plan.....
12. Ha! As they say, it ain't over till it's over.......
13.
I think people are right to voice their opinions, especially considering that's exactly what the OP wanted us to do.
I think that when someobody asks for an opinion on here there is an assumption that they'd prefer an informed opinion based on something a bit more useful than 'it's cheap it must be crap'. Otherwise, what's the point of asking? The reviews on the interweb from people who have actually played or own one of these basses are quite positive. A Google search could prove fruitful.
14. How many of these threads to we actually need?
15. When I had my TC RH450 Classic I also had a cab that needed some boost at the very bottom end - not unlike the one owned by the OP. Unfortunately, the frequency response of the TC rolls off below 80Hz. So when I tried to compensate for a lack of low-lows by turning the bass control up I also boosted the upper bass, which led to boom. That and the clanky mids (IMO) meant that I couldn't get on with it. The non-Classic version has more sophisticated tone controls and might work better. I changed to an Ashdown MiBass, which allowed me to dial in the bottom end I wanted.
16. There are ways and ways..... Advertisement 1. Rock bassist wanted. NO JEWS! Advertisement 2. Rock bassist wanted for a bunch of born-again Christians. If you're comfortable with that, and preferably share the same beliefs, come and join us. To me, the ad sounded more like 1. than 2.. although I'm sure Neil meant no offense and will perhaps take something away from this little discussion.
17. Porting the cab wouldn't be too difficult (although a pain): I'd be more worried about how 'sealed' the back panel was. I expect Lean will produce some ported cabs for bass if this line takes off, which it quite likely will. It might be worth waiting until then. As far as drivers are concerned, the Green Celestion neos (BN12-300X) are a good inexpensive buy - inexpensive for neo drivers that is. What is interesting about this range of cabs is that could offer an opportunity to clone some, dare I say it, overpriced booteek models.
18. If I were in Essex, greyparrot, I'd be over in a flash. I've always enjoyed your vids.

Yamaha BBs
This might have all ready been covered so apologies if it has but I'm looking for a cure to the neck dive with my BB415, I have read else where that new tuners will do the job, is there anything that could work? If not what tuners do I need to be looking at and how much money will I be I looking at?
A set of Hipshot tuners cured the neck dive on my BB. I think Schaller and Gotoh make something similar. They need to be made of aluminium.
20. Bought a bridge from Paul. The transaction went smoothly, delivery was fast and the item was exactly as described. Recommeneded.
21. It sounds like it's fried, yes. You're unlikely to do better than the Visaton one, although there are other ones around that are a bit cheaper. Like this one: <http://www.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/l-pad-attenuator-at-62h-425-p.asp>
22. I'll take it. Please PM me your info. Is it aluminium or brass?
23. That would be Mike Cooper, I take it. Nice to see he's still around and about.
24. I use open strings all the time. They are different because you have to damp them in a different way to stop them ringing too long - you can't just lift your finger off the fret.
