Does anyone make a separate mid-range speaker for a modular system?
stevie replied to Spoombung's topic in Amps and Cabs
A separate midrange driver is the best thing since sliced bread. Here's my DIY solution: -

QSC RMX 850 power amplifier. 2 x 430 watts - broken. £80 only! When I bought this amplifier I was told it had only been used for backup. It certainly is in as-new condition inside and out - there aren't even any rackmounting marks - and it comes in its original carton. Despite the fact that this range of amps has a legendary reputation for reliability (and the bass sound I got was the best I've ever had), it has started to blow fuses. I switch on - it blows a fuse or a circuit breaker. I can't be bothered with the hassle of finding a repair person and getting it repaired and am therefore selling it as faulty. Don't ask me what's wrong with it - I haven't a clue. I will say that it looks perfect internally, i.e. nothing is burned, charred or melted: it's absolutely pristine. My troubleshooting was limited to looking inside and checking the two internal fuses, which are fine. As this is a £400 amp, at £80 this should be a bargain for somebody with the know-how. By the way, if you have a working power amp and would be interested in taking my QSC in part ex., let me know. NBD - Squier JV - Kramer 7000 - Warwick streamer - with sound samples! :)
stevie replied to LukeFRC's topic in Bass Guitars
The JV with its original pickup sounds wonderful: it has the "thunk". I'm surprised how middly the SPB-1 sounds in comparison, as it is touted as one of the finest vintage P-Bass replacements you can buy. I expect the Duncan pickup could be made to sound like the JV pickup with a bit of bass lift in the preamp, but still - that's an eye-opener! -
Just sold Mark some bass books. Payment came through very quickly and the transaction was as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Sold Gareth an amplifier and the deal went like clockwork. Fast payment, good communication and no hassles. A gentleman.

Araldite also works well, and is used by some of the speaker manufacturers for this purpose. Dustcaps do have a habit of coming loose (but not when they're araldited on).

This is my Ashdown MiBass 550 head. It is only a few months old and indistinguishable from a new one (with plenty of warranty left). 550W output into 4 ohms. Very small and as light as a feather. It has a really versatile eq section that is also easy to use. Twin Speakon outs. A very useful MP3 input, which will double as a keyboard input (or anything else in an emergency). The same B&O power amp section as Ampeg, MarkBass, Genz Benz, Eden and others, which all cost a lot more. Selling for £250 which is £100 less than the best price I could find for one of these on the web (a 'B' grade from Thomann). Otherwise, £399 seems to be the going price: http://www.gak.co.uk...ibass-550/50387 Sorry for the stock photo, but it really is brand spanking. The Ashdown info page is here: http://www.ashdownmu...tion=mb&ID=264. I'd consider a part-ex for a standalone power amp, as I'm now looking at putting together a pre/power amp combination.
Stevie.... With all due respect, we are not simply badging some chinese products....... Headstock distribution (Laney) have owned the HH brand for some considerable time now. It's taken a while to get things going with it but I can assure you that all of the products are designed here in the UK. Yes the majority of them are manufactured in the far east.... because we have to be competative. Also we have an extensive procurement system in place that allows us to do this with good results and confidence. Part of the reason why we give HH (and Laney) a 5 year warranty.
Fair enough crez. I probably had you confused with Carlsbro for a moment. (Yes, I too had a couple of HH amps).
By the way, does anyone know if subs like this need running in before first proper use?
No.
-
Yep! They're industry standard for a reason.
Because they've been around a long time and don't break.

I think you'll find this is more about raising the height of the top cab than having your speakers in a line. As Lawrence said in one of his very sensible posts earlier, when you stack cabs you reduce their vertical dispersion. It's just that you compensate by having the top speaker much closer to your ears.
Technically, of course you are correct, but you've taken what I stated/quoted wildly out of context ....
I'm not sure what context you're referring to. You quoted Bill Fitzmaurice as saying the results of mixing cabs are unpredictable. By the way, Bill Fitzmaurice is on record as saying you should never mix cabs *period*.
-
Out of fairness to what I know Bill FItzmaurice has said, it is not that mixing drivers is guaranteed to be bad , it's that the results are unpredictable,
Bill Fitzmaurice is wrong. The results are perfectly predictable. They are quite easy to calculate, easy to measure (if you have the gear) and easy to predict if you have enough experience. Compared with calculating the performance of a modern stadium line array system, calculating the performance of a 1x15 and a 1x 12, or whatever combination of bass cabs you may care to mention, is child's play.

I've used other free antivirus software but the Microsoft one is excellent, although it occasionally hogs the system when you open My Documents. Like Ped, I've experienced AVG missing viruses. I've also tried a number of firewalls including Zonealarm, which in one of its incarnations forced me to reinstall the operating system!. The best one, in my opinion, because it's very easy to use, has virtually no overhead, and is very reliable, is the Ashampoo firewall. Nobody has ever heard of it but it's fantastic. Trust me. Vorsprung and all that. Just my two penn'orth. (I earn a living on my PC).
There is a section which is separate to the manual containing the corrected info (2.66R minimum load (that's 2.67 ohm)) but I don't think it's unreasonable, after a year or so, to expect them to have corrected the online manual.
I found that I could drive my Classic 450 into 2 ohms no problem, and I'm not alone in that either. Your mileage may very though, as they say.
Strange post.
Not really.

Saw them live in the UK and they sounded *exactly* like on the record. Funnily enough, there were no harmonizers or pitch correctors then.

Does anyone gig with just a B/F Midget cab?
stevie replied to MoonBassAlpha's topic in Amps and Cabs
The Midget's 330cc displacement is equivalent to three average tens.
Displacement is only the part of the story, of course. -
Nostalgia for HH is one thing ...
We could do with a bit less of the nostalgia actually. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, but this is purely a branding exercise, with a respected brand stuck onto some Chinese products. There's nothing wrong with that, and they look really good, but let's not get carried away here.
Not as good - it's a perfectly decent mic, and it will fool any audience (and most of your band), but it ain't the real thing. If you're able to A/B them, as I can, then the difference is pretty obvious. Otherwise, I reckon you'd never notice it.
Nice to see a bit of honesty in advertising.
