Choosing a Class D head with more than 500W at 4 ohms and no more than £700
stevie replied to Clarky's topic in Amps and Cabs
My limited experience of two highly regarded class-D bass amps is that they couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag. Definitely try before you buy if you're spending that kind of dosh. And try with your band if you can - in the shop doesn't tell you a lot. Of course, those who own these amps are going to tell you they are wonderful - and they might be right. But it's you're money. -
This'll be great! Will be following the thread, very jealous of the CNC machine!
Yes, me too. Be careful with your crossover parts. If you can, find out what their power rating is. Most ferrite-based inductors will start to saturate well before you reach the maximum output of this system. Use laminated core or air-core. The latter is the best but expensive. Are you using poplar ply?

No, I'm not. do I need to be? It says 'Posted image' where the photo should appear. I'm not logged into Facebook when I use Chrome but I can see the photos in that browser.

Can anyone explain to me why I can't see the photos using Firefox? I can see them when I use Chrome.

Does anyone make a separate mid-range speaker for a modular system?
stevie replied to Spoombung's topic in Amps and Cabs
Dispersion isn't the only consideration in designing a midrange add-on. Spending up to £100 on a driver, half as much again on a crossover and then not making the most of its benefits by crossing over as high as 1k doesn't make a lot of sense. It wouldn't surprise me, however, if a lot of commercial bass cabs are crossed over that high in order to reduce the cost of the crossover. For the current crop of PA midrange drivers 600Hz is usually good, although there is a lot more than you might imagine to getting the crossover point right: much depends on the drivers you are using. There are currently some very good, low-cost midrange drivers available - from Celestion in particular - which could form the basis of a cheap midrange add-on. Unfortunately, designing a passive crossover is not an undertaking for the faint-hearted and, as Lfalex points out, an active solution would be complex, requiring asymmetrical slopes, phase compensation and frequency response shaping (all of which is relatively easy to achieve with a passive solution) - not to mention an additional power amp. The benefits of having a separate midrange driver are very worthwhile, however, and I'd never want to be without mine. -

A separate midrange driver is the best thing since sliced bread. Here's my DIY solution: -
QSC RMX 850 power amplifier - broken. SOLD

QSC RMX 850 power amplifier. 2 x 430 watts - broken. £80 only! When I bought this amplifier I was told it had only been used for backup. It certainly is in as-new condition inside and out - there aren't even any rackmounting marks - and it comes in its original carton. Despite the fact that this range of amps has a legendary reputation for reliability (and the bass sound I got was the best I've ever had), it has started to blow fuses. I switch on - it blows a fuse or a circuit breaker. I can't be bothered with the hassle of finding a repair person and getting it repaired and am therefore selling it as faulty. Don't ask me what's wrong with it - I haven't a clue. I will say that it looks perfect internally, i.e. nothing is burned, charred or melted: it's absolutely pristine. My troubleshooting was limited to looking inside and checking the two internal fuses, which are fine. As this is a £400 amp, at £80 this should be a bargain for somebody with the know-how. By the way, if you have a working power amp and would be interested in taking my QSC in part ex., let me know. NBD - Squier JV - Kramer 7000 - Warwick streamer - with sound samples! :)
stevie replied to LukeFRC's topic in Bass Guitars
The JV with its original pickup sounds wonderful: it has the "thunk". I'm surprised how middly the SPB-1 sounds in comparison, as it is touted as one of the finest vintage P-Bass replacements you can buy. I expect the Duncan pickup could be made to sound like the JV pickup with a bit of bass lift in the preamp, but still - that's an eye-opener! -
Just sold Mark some bass books. Payment came through very quickly and the transaction was as smooth as a baby's bottom.

Sold Gareth an amplifier and the deal went like clockwork. Fast payment, good communication and no hassles. A gentleman.

Araldite also works well, and is used by some of the speaker manufacturers for this purpose. Dustcaps do have a habit of coming loose (but not when they're araldited on).

This is my Ashdown MiBass 550 head. It is only a few months old and indistinguishable from a new one (with plenty of warranty left). 550W output into 4 ohms. Very small and as light as a feather. It has a really versatile eq section that is also easy to use. Twin Speakon outs. A very useful MP3 input, which will double as a keyboard input (or anything else in an emergency). The same B&O power amp section as Ampeg, MarkBass, Genz Benz, Eden and others, which all cost a lot more. Selling for £250 which is £100 less than the best price I could find for one of these on the web (a 'B' grade from Thomann). Otherwise, £399 seems to be the going price: http://www.gak.co.uk...ibass-550/50387 Sorry for the stock photo, but it really is brand spanking. The Ashdown info page is here: http://www.ashdownmu...tion=mb&ID=264. I'd consider a part-ex for a standalone power amp, as I'm now looking at putting together a pre/power amp combination.
Stevie.... With all due respect, we are not simply badging some chinese products....... Headstock distribution (Laney) have owned the HH brand for some considerable time now. It's taken a while to get things going with it but I can assure you that all of the products are designed here in the UK. Yes the majority of them are manufactured in the far east.... because we have to be competative. Also we have an extensive procurement system in place that allows us to do this with good results and confidence. Part of the reason why we give HH (and Laney) a 5 year warranty.
Fair enough crez. I probably had you confused with Carlsbro for a moment. (Yes, I too had a couple of HH amps).
By the way, does anyone know if subs like this need running in before first proper use?
No.
Yep! They're industry standard for a reason.
Because they've been around a long time and don't break.

I think you'll find this is more about raising the height of the top cab than having your speakers in a line. As Lawrence said in one of his very sensible posts earlier, when you stack cabs you reduce their vertical dispersion. It's just that you compensate by having the top speaker much closer to your ears.
Technically, of course you are correct, but you've taken what I stated/quoted wildly out of context ....
I'm not sure what context you're referring to. You quoted Bill Fitzmaurice as saying the results of mixing cabs are unpredictable. By the way, Bill Fitzmaurice is on record as saying you should never mix cabs *period*.
