Thinking of adding a MM type pup to a passive P bass?
stevie replied to dave_bass5's topic in Bass Guitars
I've been toying with the same idea myself. I've got a Jazz pickup behind the P-bass pickup, but it requires extreme tweaking of the eq to get a good sound because its position close to the bridge makes it very middy. If I didn't have 3-band eq on my bass it wouldn't be very usable at all. In theory, fitting a MM with a coil tap switch should give you a Jazz and a MM sound. Unfortunately, the existence of the P-Bass pickup means that you can't fit the MM in the same position as a Stingray. Not sure how much difference that will make. By the way, I had the Nordy pickup and didn't like it at all on my Vintage MM copy. The original Wilkinson pickup (which looks and measures the same as the later OLP pickups) sounded loads better. -
Nice to see this being resurrected. I'm definitely up for this.

Think I've just blown at least 1 speaker in my GK neo 212 - Advice Needed
I'm going to inspect them properly tomorrow but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I'd guess that I've fried the voice-coil somehow, but how do I tell if this is the case?
Push the cone in using even pressure all round and listen for the coil scraping behind the dustcap. If you smelled burning, it's likely that the driver is damaged. I've just noticed that MIJ has already suggested this. Still, great minds and all that ..... -
Frankie Miller - Love Letters album. IMO, the best singer ever to come out of the UK. I remember seeing him with the Stoics, which really dates me.

Very belated feedback for Colin (sorry!) who bought my Trace head. Lovely guy to deal with. Thanks!

Matt bought my Stingray copy for his sister. (It's only now that it's gone that I realize how good it was.) Anyway, the transaction was very easy and communication was first class.

Sold a Musicman pickup to Kurca. Everything went smoothly. What a nice chap! Recommended.

Bought an OPL bass from Tim, which is in great nick with fresh strings. Tim went the extra mile, arranging for his drummer to deliver personally to my door. What a star! You don't get this quality of service very often. Thanks, Tim.

Behringer has just launched some new 1u lightweight amps. The EPQ1000 looks perfect (2 x 500 watts, 10" deep, 5kg) at an RRP of £240. There are no independent tests yet, but these could well provide a killer bass amp with a suitable pre. Bridgeable, balanced input (XLR or jack), unbalanced input, limiters, built-in crossover - well worth checking out when they arrive in the shops. The usual UK retailers are advertising them already, although I doubt they have any stock, as Thomann isn't even listing them yet.
.... if you do combine cabs that have phase issues then the only solution is to change one of the cabs. This is more likely to happen when mixing cabs from different brands.
Exactly why is that?

I could be interested in buying the empty cab from you. Let me know when you have decided on the way forward.
Would it be ok to add a 4 Ohm Cab to a MarkBass MiniMark? The MarkBass Combo says 8 Ohm min' - I am thinking that the 4 Ohm is greater than 8 Ohm - but just checking in case. Would this type of pairing harm the extension cab or amp in the long term?
I've no experience of these, but I do know that 4 ohms is less than 8 ohms. If it says '8 ohms minimum', you can't do it and could damage your amp.
Mixing cabs can cause phase cancellation at some frequencies, meaning the cabs are cancelling each other out at those frequencies.
This is true, but phase cancellation occurs with any two cabs whether or not they have different speakers. Or any individual cab containing more than one of the same type of speaker.

It's bit of an abortion. It won't work as a bass cab because of the open back.
Who was this bass_ferret chap and why was he banned?
Yes, the people need to know! Funny, I've only just noticed how old this thread is.
To be quite honest Mr Bass Ferret, most of what you say is merely belitteling someone else, and thus to anyone with any sense, meaningless.
I have to disagree. Mir Bass Ferret has a point. Everyone is going to vote for what they've got. Obvious, innit?
OK.. thanks for that.
Well, if you disagree, WoT, you are allowed to say so.

Now that we're already on the 11th page of effusive praise, I'd just like to observe that the power of branding is alive and kicking in the 21st century. A thousand pounds for a simple bit of wood and wire - just because it's made in the USA. Nothing wrong with the P-bass but it has less technology in it than a five quid box of Lego. They should be selling for about £250. What's the difference between a Squier and a made-in USA? Well, the Squier pickups I've measured (I've only measured half a dozen) were all underwound, and would produce a thin sound whatever you fitted them to. Funny that. (Yes, I know that's not conclusive, but I found it quite interesting). Branding. Market differentiation. Image. That's what Fender is all about. The Japanese showed 25 years ago that they could whip Fender's butt as far as product quality, consistency and price are concerned, but Fender had - and still has - the image. And that''s what people are buying when they buy Fender. Think Starbucks, Gucci, American beer. I thought you might appreciate a different perspective.
Anyone know if these will fit without modification?
It's impossible to see from your picture, but the Quarterpounder Jazz wouldn't fit into my older BB Yammy without opening up the corners a bit. It wasn't very difficult to do with a small file. You'll probably have this problem with any replacement pickup, as the Yamaha pickups (on my bass anyway) are rounder than normal in the corners. I had the same problem with the Vintage Duncan, but was able to file down the bobbins on the Duncans and use the Yamaha pickup covers. You can't do this on the Quarterpounders, though, because of the size of the polepieces. I can certainly recommend the pickups. You're not going to find anything better and the price is right.
