  1. I was going to say a used Behringer BX4500H, but their prices are now a lot higher than they used to be - so people seem to have cottoned on to them. Still, you should be able to get hold of one for between £70 and £100 if you're patient. They sound as good as most bass amps on the market. It's a tribute/clone/ripoff of the Ashdown 300W head - so that might appeal to you. The BX4500 has a reasonable reputation for reliability but their fan is a bit loud for home use. Otherwise, I'd be happy to gig with one, and indeed have.
  2. If Luke's up for it, that sounds like a great idea! I'm not familiar with the Meyer Sound SIM - does it do quasi-anechoic measurements or is it an RTA-type system? The fact that it can use music as the basis for its measurements is intriguing. Anyway, for a standard frequency response, the mic needs to be on the tweeter axis and at least two metres away (because of the size of the cabinet). I make my quasi-anechoic measurements with the speaker in the air, but they are only valid down to 200Hz. For below 200Hz, I use a ground plane or a summed nearfield and port measurement. I can splice these two responses to give me a full range frequency response, but it's fiddly, and I find that an RTA with pink noise and multiple mic positions gives me a good idea of how the system sounds in situ (i.e. on the ground). I'm off to do a bit of research on the SIM. Not that I'm ever likely to be able to afford one.....
  3. Not overkill. I tried using a chop saw at first and it splintered. In the end, I used a handsaw, but your solution is much better.
  4. As promised, I've ordered another 10 cabinet kits from my CNC supplier. I've sorted out the minor niggles that cropped up on the last batch, like the position of the handle holes (thanks to Luke for the drawing) and the width of the rebates. The kits should be available mid-December - so call it an early Christmas present to yourself or a project to keep yourself occupied during your Christmas break. About five Basschatters have already reserved kits from this second batch (thanks for your patience!), which means that five are still available. There won't be any more when these are gone. While I wait for delivery, I'm going to order up various smaller items (handles, screws, feet, wadding, etc) so that you don't have to order from lots of different places. When I've got it organised, I'll put the information in the Parts List on page one of this thread. You will have to order the Chinese cabinet corners, however, and I'd suggest you do that now. The ad for eBay item number: 39235207159 claims to ship from Ireland - so you might like to order those. I've now sorted the grille fixing situation to my satisfaction, which means that the grille frame is no longer necessary - saving time and weight. I'll supply the fittings free with the kit if you ask me for them. There is a possibility that I could buy a batch of aluminium grilles and get them powder coated, but that will depend on the costs I'm quoted. I'll let you know.
  5. I would expect there to sufficient clearance (but I haven't checked specifically and will do later). It should just be a matter of swapping the top and bottom panels.
  6. I happen to have a hole saw that cuts a perfect hole for the port. However, I built the first prototype cabs from panels cut at the wood merchant's and I know how long it took to assemble them - bl**dy ages. The flatpacks make it so easy.
  7. Could well be, Richard. Chienmortbb called it the Mega Rig of Doom - and he wasn't wrong.😀
  8. While Chienmortbb was here this afternoon repairing my coil winder, we alpha tested the BCcab 112 with a "sub" (same cab but with a lowpassed 12" bass driver). It was impressive. I had been concerned that the bass might sound excessive, but it wasn't in the slightest. It didn't sound like there was any more bass, but the overall sound was bigger (no surprise) and the bass was tighter (which was a surprise). I guess this will be a project for the New Year.
  9. And that wiring looks right. Just make sure that the three green wires are in the centre of the connector strip.
  10. I can tell you how to connect it if the red mark isn't there. But it certainly should be.
  11. There should be a red mark on one of the terminals, Luke.
  12. It's probably also worth mentioning that Mesa are selling that horn and the diaphragm for the same price as speaker specialists in the US like USspeaker. So the big markup is happening in the UK.
  13. True. The mirror front plate doesn't bother me, as I normally don't change my settings during a gig, but I do have to peer at it and squint before the gig to make sure the settings are where they should be.
  14. Yes, that's interesting. They're the Mesa distributor for the UK. One of the reasons that manufacturers like to use "OEM drivers" is that they can make this kind of obscene profit margin and not be found out, although to be fair, Mesa don't indulge in that kind of nonsense. Also, we don't know whether the ripoff is taking place in the USA or in the UK.
  15. Piano is a much more exacting test of sound quality than bass. You can get away with a lot with bass guitar, but keyboards - and particularly piano - reveal shortcomings fairly quickly. It's not that you can't hear the the shortcomings with bass, but piano makes them more obvious.
  16. Indeed. It's the first build I'm aware of that's based on the plans rather than the CNC kit. Perhaps not surprising, as Richard is responsible for producing the plans that appear on the parallel thread.
  17. Attendance & Gear List: 1. @Frank Blank’s Acoustic Corner - Godin A4, Rob Allen Mouse, Ibanez SRC6, QSC K12.2, Helix Stomp, HX Edit. 2. @Rich's Garden Of Delights - Shuker custom 5, Tanglewood acoustic 4, EBS Neo 2x12 & probable new amp (tbc) - both basses strung with nickel Elixirs. Possibly some FS stuff, details tbc once it hits the paid Marketplace. 3. @wrinkleygit, Jabba’s Semi Hollow Fretless, ‘72 Gibson EB0, SWR Working Mans 10 combo & 1x10 ext cab & a set of h’phones. Both basses strung with Labella flats 4. @scrumpymike Setting aside a bunch of FS stuff to give SW Bashers first shot and minimise packing and shipping work/costs. Unless cash flow dictates earlier sale, this will include: a couple of BF cabs (either SC Gen 3s or Two10s, to be decided); BF One10; Maruszczyk Elwood 30" scale; Spector Bantam if still unsold (already posted FS); Eden WT550 if still unsold (already posted FS); Ampeg PF800. 'Keepers' also on display will be: the other pair of BF cabs; my no. 1 gig bass 'Rascal Mervyn-Lyte; 'Rascal Lyte Mkll - provided I can decide what it's going to be in time for AndyJr to build it; my no 1 gig amp (Subway 800+); my old no 1 gig amp (Genzler Magellan 800). All of which will hopefully bring forward the day when Mrs Scrumpy can finally join her old man in retirement 😁 5. @Pea Turgh My Frankenstein Jazzguarman(!) strung with D’Addario XL Chrome flats. My black bitsa (same strings). Probably my Peterson combo which I’ll flit between selling and not selling (still). 6. @stevie Ibanez SR1200-VNF, Ashdown RM500, BCcab 112, plus some other bass cab developments (probably) 7. 8. 9. 10. 7. 8. 9. 10.
  18. With a B&C neo 8 in the box, it's likely to be good - so why exaggerate the specs like that?
  19. And 103dB sensitivity to boot! From an 8" driver.
  20. I think there are a few people looking for one of these.
