1. Wow - I'll have a bunch of those! Many thanks for sharing.
2.
I wonder if we've all got a bit caught up in the hunt for the perfect flat response / hi-fi / super sensitive / massive handling etc. cab over recent years, and forgotten that - for a lot of us at least - a nice driver in a good, well designed & built box gives us the classic bass sound we've got in our heads after all.
The frequency response measurements I've seen for most bass cabs are all over the place. Many claim to have a perfect flat response but very few deliver in practice. I measured the driver used in your cab (Eminence Beta 12) loaded in the Basschat 12 prototype box and published the results in the Diary thread. It was very smooth and flat - noticeably smoother than the Beyma driver recommended for the box. I have to say, there is something about the sound of a driver that extends smoothly and cleanly through to the upper midrange that is very seductive. The Celestion Orange series is similar in that respect and I expect it would be an equivalent neo driver for those looking to save more weight.
3. There's nothing magical about the TL606. You could always look out for a cheap Trace 1513 cabinet and load it with your favourite driver. The results will be pretty much the same.
4.
It's interesting what high regard these are held in on basschat, as on paper they look decent but unremarkable; a quality but not premium spec Eminence driver in a 40-something litre box, and (going by the sensitivity) figures, tuned for a small mid-bass bump. It's clear that in the flesh they have a sound which people like though.
I don't get it either. I have no idea how TKS managed to turn what is a very average-to-mediocre driver into a much-recommended bass cab. It's in a half-inch poplar cabinet too, which doesn't help. They appear to have done something right though.
5. Says the man with a Glockenklang Blue Soul and two Wals!!
6. Interesting how the solution to any problem on here seems to be to buy more gear.....
7.
Nope middle of the room push at present. And I've had the problem in other rooms.
I think Paul is on the right track here. Forget about trying different gear - just try your amp in different parts of the room. You'll notice that certain parts of the room emphasise certain boomy frequencies. Where you stand also makes a difference. Find somewhere that doesn't emphasise a boomy frequency, although that's often easier said than done in a small room. The middle of the room, incidentally, will kill all the bottom end, just as a corner will boost it.
8. I've always thought that amps with a toroidal transformer produce a more rounded sound.
9.
Neither sources mentioning Neo, Lightweight as specifications for Boutique then?
Yes, and I fear there may be a few Basschatters who think their gear is boutique just because it was built in somebody's garage.
10. They're not cheap, but they look the business. The specs are unusually informative.
11. Boogie have worked hard to build a very strong brand. I reckon that will make a big difference, as people like to be associated with a good brand name. I don't doubt that the product will be good, but that's often not the main factor influencing the purchase decision.
12. So let me get this straight. If a bass player in a band is producing an indistinct, boomy, honky sound and he thinks it's good and the audience doesn't notice, even though it's clearly awful to the discerning ear - it is good. Right?
13. It may not be state-of-the-art, but that's a real bargain.
14.
I'm still struggling with the definition of 'boutique' - I bought all of my amps second hand - are they still boutique, is it Neo speakers that makes them boutique, or does a badge make them boutique, or is boutique a euphemism for lightweight?
Google says 'a business serving a sophisticated or specialized clientele' - which can't be right..... However, the brilliant Urban Dictionary says "In musical instruments, a specialized brand of very high end, usually handmade items made in small numbers. Generally a term applied to brands like… Guitar amps like Matchless, Diezel, Trainwreck, Wizard, etc. Basses like Status Buzzard, Ken Smith, Tobias, etc. Guitars like Pensa, Manson, Rick Turner, Alembic, etc." - which sounds more like it.
15.
Fair point...but my introduction to NEO's was when I put 2510 deltalites in my Goliath Jnr box...and hated them. I'd looked around to see whether this conversion was common as PAS speakers were like gold dust in the U.K and no one had recone kits either. The conversion WAS common and people said they loved it.... well, I liked the weight save, but sold the boxes asap. So, the box was a decent SWR box..albeit maybe not tuned optimally for the NEO chassis but it wasn't the volume] that was the problem, it w as the sound. Anyway... it wasn't until I used Markbass with NEO that I got the idea that NEO wasn't working....and then onto all the others and same thought that these boxes weren't really happening for my ears. The only NEO cabs I got reasonable comments on were Berg AE112's .
It's a shame your introduction to neo was with a mediocre chassis. I don't doubt your experience for a minute, but I know of no evidence anywhere that would lead me to believe that neodymium sounds any different to ceramic. There are some driver manufacturers making equivalent products in neo and ceramic and professional buyers make their choice for reasons of weight and price, but not on sound. So my thinking is that the difference lies elsewhere, and cabinet construction does make a noticeable difference to sound quality. When you listen to a speaker with no cabinet (like a Quad Electrostatic or an open baffle), it's quite amazing how much the cabinet does actually contribute.
16. Could be this: https://www.bax-shop.co.uk/flight-case-wheels/penn-elcom-w2001-50mm-recessed-caster-black Or this: http://www.adamhall.com/en/Adam_Hall_Hardware_3783_-_Recessed_Edge_Castor_58_mm_in_plastic_Housing.html Difficult to tell from the picture, but as t-h says, it looks like a fairly standard part and is probably not exclusive to Genz.
17.
I have to say, I've never really been sold on any NEO cabs I tried. Doesn't mean I didn't use them at the time...just knew something wasn't quite right. I could list them as there are a good few... but not one did I like. Draw your own conclusions but the one common element was NEO. That is why I feel I can say I don't like NEO. Whether that might change at some point in the future when I hear one, is a maybe.
The other common element that you may not have considered is that cab manufacturers who use neo speakers always put them in lightweight boxes. There might be one, but I don't know of any commercial neo cab that hasn't got a thinwall or balsawood-type box. I'd like to suggest that what you heard was not so much the sound of neo but rather the sound of insubstantial cabinet walls vibrating. Just a thought.
18. It was indeed very silly - but I just did what you did. Wasn't your point that modern cars handle better than 1973 cars (thus demonstrating in some weird way that modern bass cabs are therefore better than older ones)? Otherwise, why bring it up?
19.
Honestly, it's like saying modern cars with their new fangled gadgets don't handle as well as a 1973 Austin 1100 on the country lanes.
Or that a 1973 Aston Martin V8 could outperform a 2015 VW Up! What a silly idea indeed!
20. Martin bought an Eminence speaker from me and everything went like clockwork. Thanks!
21. The Beta has now found a new home. Only the Delta left now. My goodness it's slow........
22. One day all bass cabinets will be like this.
