1. No, sorry, guys. These all pale into insignificance compared with this. I just wish I knew how to recreate it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=porkY6I0LLc&feature=youtu.be [Edit - still can't get the blighter to embed......]
2. I don't think Carvin has a reputation for poor reliability, do they? There's nothing on the web that indicates that is the case, and I know there are quite a few Basschatters happily using Carvin bass amps. I can only tell you that this amp has performed impeccably for me and is very well built. It has a very pro feel to it. There's a video on YouTube showing the interior if you'd like to check it out. I'd expect it to work for years without any issues. The last power amp I had was a QSC 850, which wasmore expensive and didn't offer as much as the Carvin. Not only that, but it blew up on me. I was fortunate enough to sell it here on Basschat to an amp tech, who later told me the power transformer had failed. Yet QSC has a reputation for reliability. I don't think the Red Eye combo was their finest hour, but that was quite a long time ago.
3. Eminence Delta 12LF - [s]£40[/s] [s]£35[/s] £30 500W driver used in a lot of commercial bass cabs and also recommended for sealed cabs. 5.35kg. http://www.eminence....Delta_12LFC.pdf This Eminence drivers have only seen a couple of hours use and is pristine (i.e. could almost pass for new). It's 8 ohms. Should you wish, I can measure the T/S parameters before you buy it. This is half the new price and I can deliver for £6.50 if you're prepared to wait a few days.
4. Behringer PEQ305 Parametric Equaliser/Bass Preamp -[s] £45[/s] NOW £40 Works great as a bass preamp, as it has balanced and unbalanced ins and outs!!! This is the kind of gear that Behringer used to build before they moved production to China. Excellent (made in Germany) build quality with standard through-hole PCBs. Repairable by your local tech if needed. I used this as a bass preamp after realising what a mistake I'd made selling my TC 1140. This is of comparable quality but is more versatile (shelf/peak filters). If you can't find your tone with this, you never will. Also great for studio and recording use. 1U high, fits a standard narrow case. Guessing at 2kg. Good used condition, as they say. Everything works fine. Alto Maxidrive 3.4 Digital Speaker Management/Active Crossover - [s]£60[/s] NOW £50 These digital crossovers/sound management systems cost about £500 when they were new. http://www.theaudiow...nt-system.html. This is a highly respected pro device with plenty of positive reviews on the web stating they outperform many of the alternatives. 3 crossover points with choice of slopes plus 5-band parametric eq, delay for individual inputs and outputs, noise gate, phase adjustment, adjustable limiters. The works! The manual is available online. £60 please. Will post either of these items at cost. Please check out my Carvin 1000W power amp in the Amps section.
5. This is my Carvin 1000W power amp. I've used it for bass and until recently for the band PA. A change of bands means it's no longer needed. £100, please. It produces 350W per channel into 4ohms, 500W per channel into *2 ohms*, or 1000W bridged into 4 ohms. Inputs are balanced stereo jack or XLR. Speaker outs are Speakon, binding posts (bare wires if you like) and even jacks. Switchable limiters. Dimensions 2U high x 19" wide x 10" deep. 26lbs / 11.8kg. Very high build quality and this one hasn't been used very much. More information here: <http://www.manualslib.com/manual/395313/Carvin-Dcm1000.html>. The SKB case isn't included. More PA gear (equalisers, crossover, etc - and the bass preamp I used with this) over in the Musically Related Items section.
6. Kieth Richards' recent autobiography: Mark Radcliffe's (sort of) autobiography: Virtually new. Only been read once. Send me a SAE and I'll post them to you.
7. I'm in two minds as to whether I should sell this (which is why I haven't bothered to continually bump it), but I thought I'd mention that I could deliver it to anyone attending the Southwest Bass Bash in Somerset next Sunday, 18th Oct.
8. I'm hoping to attend. I have a newish all-digital Markbass LMIII I could bring along for a comparison with an older or LMII model - to see if there really is a difference. I've just put a couple of music-related books in the Recycling section for anyone attending the bash. Just message me and I'll reserve them and bring them along for you.
9.
my kick drum's fairly dead but I learned to whack it harder. For most music modern the bass drum should be the loudest instrument in the kit, and IMO that should be achieved acoustically before you start micing anything up
I suppose there are drummers and drummers. I don't think there's a lot you can do about that. However, in my current band the kick drum gets lost as soon as the rest of the band start playing. Which is why we put it through the PA cabs (good 1x 12s). Nothing else goes through the PA apart from the vocals. It doesn't seem to be a problem but I'd be interested to know if there's a better way.
10.
I see a lot of drummers who rely on the PA/monitors to get volume out of their kick drum. IMHO this is bad technique
My band's guilty of this. In my previous band the drummer had an amp and cab he put the kick drum through. What are the options, without buying a big PA rig and getting a sound guy in?
11.
And it was the Jake. Hmmmm.... Food for thought indeed!
Indeed so! And it makes a mockery of the saying 'You get what you pay for!" Now that I know which is which, I also still prefer the cheaper one. Congratulations to those who got it right.
12. No indeed. What we want are more threads from people who have ordered a new piece of equipment. They haven't got it yet, in fact they haven't even heard it before, but they are so excited they have to tell us that they've placed the order. Then, if all goes to plan, they can tell us that the delivery man has knocked on the door. And then do an unpackaging video to entertain and delight us all. All of this accompanied by a bunch of cloth-eared invididuals telling the OP what a wonderful item of equipment it is because they themselves have bought it. In fact, if everyone who bought a new piece of equipment started a thread like that, what a wonderful place Basschat would be!
13. Hmmm. I'm not imagining things. Bass number two sounds more expensive than bass number one. It's a fuller, rounder sound with more character. There's a lovely growl on the lower notes. If number two isn't the vintage Fender, then it should be.
14.
I have just uploaded three short videos from the cab shootout. Normal test in the first video, cheap cab tested in the second video, mini cab tested in the third.
The sound quality is perfectly respectable. I'd be very interested in hearing the whole vid if that's at all possible.
15. I don't know which is which but I can hear the difference. The first one is thinner with slightly more top end. The second one is fuller, richer and smoother. I prefer the second one but I agree, in a live setting they'd be very difficult to tell apart.
16. I had the 15" version. It looked quite smart from the outside, but a peek inside revealed lots of voids in the plywood and one of the two perfunctory braces rattled because it hadn't been glued in properly. It had no wadding inside. Plus, the speaker was the cheapest and nastiest I have ever seen in decades in the business. The cabinet droned along with the bass notes and it sounded awful. In summary, a pile of junk. There is now a Mark II version, which might be better.
17. Count me in. Sunday afternoons would be favourite.
18. Fascinating stuff! Please say someone recorded this.
19. JellyKnees, those drivers look like they might be 1970s Greenback Celestions and therefore worth a few bob. I'm not an expert - so you'll have to do a bit of research to find out. You could start here: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/index.php?threads/celestion-greenback-id-thread-pics-descriptions-etc.67646/page-2 and here: http://solodallas.com/celestion-loudspeakers-from-blues-to-greenies-and-beyond
20. I'd like to point out that a bass cab isn't a PA. So while you can use DSP in a PA system for quite a few different things - lots of them really useful - on a bass cab all you can do is alter the frequency response a bit and perhaps add some judicious limiting. If a cab needs this kind of tweaking, it should probably have had more money spent on the drivers in the first place. So the comparison with PAs is misleading IMO.
21. I'm with Subthumper here. If it's a proper (cast chassis) B&C, have it reconed. The current Markbass drivers are Chinese B&C ripoffs (I'm not even going to say copies) - so that's probably what you will get.
22. I've seen Markbass cabs with HPLs in them, but I've never seen a B&C with a pressed steel chassis. I suppose anything is possible if you're buying in large enough quantities. The eBay one is from a relatively old Markbass cab.
23. Someone is auctioning one on eBay, although it doesn't look anything like the HPLs. <http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MARK-BASS-NEODYMIUM-12-NEO-SPEAKER-DRIVER-B-C-MADE-IN-ITALY-/221855157676?hash=item33a7990dac>
24.
The tweeter in my Epifani UL2-112 cab needs replaced. I contacted Epifani - they say there isn't a compatible one on the market and that I'd have to buy one from them.
They would say that, wouldn't they? Post a photo of the tweeter so that we can have a look. A close-up of any labels would help, too. You can almost certainly fit a low-cost P.Audio tweeter, but you need to make sure the efficiency is in the same ballpark as the original.
