Replacing Berg CN212 with 2x BF Super Compacts... Thoughts?
stevie replied to goonerjoe's topic in Amps and Cabs
This is the absolute opposite of reality! It is incredibly easy to get rid of bass (turn the bass knob to the left) but impossible to add more than the limit determined by the volume displacement of a loudspeaker.
It's only incredibly easy if the excess bass perfectly matches the curve of the tone control. If you have a boom at 100Hz, you're a bit stuck. -
I'd be interested in knowing what modern 15" bass guitar driver can even get close to the output of two EVM 15s.

I think it's clear what was meant, tauzero.

Fane Acoustics is a driver manufacturer based in Yorkshire. They're still going, although most of their products are made in China now. The width of the base of the cone in photos 2 and 3 is the voice coil diameter. It looks like 2.5 inches to me, but it's impossible to tell from here. Fane's top-of-the range drivers of that era had 2.5-inch coils and were 200 watts - but they had larger magnets.
-
It looks like a Fane OEM driver. Without any other information or a picture of the voice coil or dustcap, I'd give an educated guess at 150 watts.

Warning.... Kappalite 3015 NOT designed for Bass!
stevie replied to skidder652003's topic in Amps and Cabs
I love it when an ancient thread suddenly reappears out of nowhere. The answer to Wimpy's question is that the Beyma is not ideal for bass guitar: it was designed for midrange efficiency more than anything else. -
There's nothing wrong with picking up a pro, or anyone else for that matter, for making statements that are for all intense and purposes incorrect. I found the statement made to be very similar to someone arguing that you shouldn't learn theory because it'll stifle your creativity.
So what, in your opinion, did that particular pro say that was incorrect?
What the likes of TKS, Barefaced, Roger Baer, Bill Fiztmaurice and Greenboy, to name a few, have done in the past few years is to make it more difficult for the major players to do what they did for a long time and just stick a driver in a cabinet and say x,y and z all based on spurious nonsense.
The people who have actually made a difference to the gear we are using are the ones who design and make the modern drive units and power amps. The names you have quoted are all niche market box stuffers using web forums to flog their wares. They are doing exactly what the major players are doing - only on a much smaller scale.
In the meantime, Rod Elliot on his ESP pages has posted a bells and whistles design for a bass amp. Part one is here: http://www.sound.wes...roject152-1.htm I would be interested in your comments.
That's a perfect design, IMO. Rod is one of the few people posting on professional audio on the internet whose advice is solid. I'd prefer the second order crossover option for use with a midrange driver. Apart from that - bang-on. There are lots of good ideas in that article. I particularly liked his comments on valve amplifiers.

One of the things that marks out a professional musician, in my experience, is the quality of the sound they produce. I don't care what the instrument is. A pro will pick up a trumpet and get a sound out of it that your average amateur just cannot do - even with the same instrument. As bass players, we probably notice this characteristic more with drummers, but it applies to all musicians - from violinists to pianists. So, when a pro bass player comes along and offers an opinion that is not necessarily mainstream (although perfectly valid IMO), arguing with him on the basis of 'transient response' and 'high Le drivers' is slightly missing the point. And remember, there's science and there's pseudo science.

Perfectly clear to me - and right on the money.

Tiny practice/acoustic session cab DIY ideas
stevie replied to Beer of the Bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think the Faital 2x6" might still be worth a shot, considering that they're sat here waiting to be used. In a 16l sealed box they get as loud as the P-Audio (which I modelled in a 16l box tuned to 45Hz) from 80Hz upwards, both in terms of efficiency and maximum SPL.
Good thinking. If you're not happy you could always fit an 8" driver in the same cab as long you make the baffle removable. By the way, make sure you're comparing xmax figures measured the same way - Faital are more optimistic than P.Audio. -
So, in use, what is the P-Audio's top end like?
I'm probably the wrong person to ask because I play a Precision-style bass with flats, but I find the top end fine. Using the same cab, I have also been messing about with some B&C 8CX21, considered by many to be the best 8" coaxial driver made. The reponse of the coax goes up to 20kHz and it doesn't sound as if it has any more HF than the P.Audio on bass guitar. So, you could fit an HF unit (a hi-fi dome tweeter would probably be the best best) but I don't personally think it's necessary. -

That's not a bad idea. The cheaper P.Audio ceramic 150-watt driver looks quite good too, but I don't think you can go wrong with the neo - especially when you consider the price of the Crazy 8. -

It's the P.Audio E8-200N. http://www.p-audio.co.uk/pdf/E8_200N.pdf It works well in 15 litres - you probably wouldn't have to change anything. -
The jury is out about whether a replacement bridge will improve your tone. However, I have an 1100S and have tried most of the available bridge options, from a no-name slightly better quality bridge to a Gotoh 201, to a Badass, to a Hipshot and a Schaller 3D-4. From an overall quality, convenience, features, adjustment point of view, the Schaller wins. It also looks really nice on the bass. My second choice would be the Gotoh, which is also cheaper of course, but I think the Schaller is worth the extra.

Here you go. This is fitted with a 200-watt neo driver. Despite its diminutive size, it can easily shake the doors and windows. The trapezoidal shape is useful but optional. Who needs a practice amp? -

The Faitals are probably not a great choice for bass guitar. They are more more suited to a studio monitor and you really need an enclosure volume of around 25 litres (each) to make the most of them. They would work in a smaller reflex box, but you'll struggle with porting (as you stated) if you go below 15 litres per driver. To get something compact, I'd be tempted to try a sealed box of around 15 litres using both drivers. The shallowness of the sealed box slope should compensate for the high rolloff. For home practice use, sealed cabinets tend to sound less 'lumpy' than reflex, although they obviously won't go as loud. For home practice I am finalising a small cab with an 8" driver not too disimilar to Jecklin's. OK - it's a bit more pro, but the idea's the same. I'll post some pictures later and if anyone's interested in building one, I could also post some DIY plans on another thread. There are a few good, inexpensive 8" drivers out there that would work. It would also be interesting to know if that IKEA drawer is still on the market. -
Yes, your right. I've had another listen and there's something happening at a high frequency. It doesn't follow the notes precisely, however; it sort of comes and goes with a slightly varying delay. It's the kind of swishy noise I'd associate with the recording/encoding. Perhaps not so conclusive after all then. The artefacts seem to be on the right channel only.

I've also been using Interparcel/UPS for a while. I had one problem where a driver dropped a cab and smashed it. It took about a month to get paid out on Interparcel's insurance. It was about £300, I think. I'd used other carriers before and had a similar thing happen with another one (amplifier dropped and smashed). I tried to claim about £40 and they just stonewalled me. It's only when things go wrong that you can tell how good a company is.

Here's a nice video of the Tonehammer by our own (I assume) Walbassist. Anybody hear distortion or lack of clarity? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3YUkuERh-I

Mid-Atlantic pretentiousness abounds on here. People think it's cool to say Pull the trigger when it just makes them sound like a numptie.
I very much liked the TH500 I tried but similar to electric guitar through a Fender Twin, the cleanest sound it does isn't truly clean.
Not truly clean, as in 'distorts audibly'? (And the Fender Twin is particularly liked for its clean tone, but that's another story).
