2.
edit : Whoever buys this beauty - I'd get that cavity deepened though (as the OP says it's easy enough to do.. piss for a luthier) as if I'm not wrong it's the actually pcb on the JE that's preventing it from closing properly. A slight bang on there could mean curtains for a nice bit of kit.
Actually, I think its the battery. It fits fine with the battery removed! But it would be a very simple job to get the cavity deepened - it literally just needs a couple of mm
 3. I've decided to move this one to fund another purcgase. Its one of the Mexican '72 Thinline reissues. New price at GAK seems to be £866 so I think £400 plus postage is a fair price. This is in mint condition and has never been gigged (I'm not good enough to gig on guitar!). 4. I've decided to sell this to fund another purchase. I put it together as I like the Jazz tone, but prefer Precision necks. The parts are all top quality. Full spec is: Neck: Fender Japan P neck - from the new 70s reissue series. Maple board with black blocks and binding. This is a fantastic neck. It's wider than a Jazz neck, but quite shallow and certainly not as chunky as a traditional P neck. I bought this from the Stratosphere website in the US (the neck alone cost me over £200 with import taxes!). The neck is mint. Body: not sure of the make of this, but it's a very nice sunburst. It looks like alder to me, with quite a nice grain. It's certainly solid wood. The picture of the whole bass looks more red than in real life. The pics of the brige and pre-amp give a better idea of the colour. There are a few scratches on the back, but no dings and nothing on the front. Pickups: Wizard 64s Pre-amp: John East J-Retro. I should mention that the control cavity is a couple of mm too shallow for the pre-amp, so the control plate sits slightly proud of the body on the bottom side. I've tried to show this on the attached photos, but it is barely noticeable. It would be easy to rout out a couple mms if this is an issue - I've just never bothered as you can hardly see it and it doesn't affect playability at all Bridge - Badass Machine heads - standard Fender (they came with the neck). So all top quality parts. I'm not sure about value. The parts would probably cost £700 or so to buy new. I'm looking for £400 plus postage. I'll send it boxed and in a gig bag. To be honest, I suspect I would get more if I split it out for parts, but I would rather sell it as a whole if possible. 5.
Flea really has not done that much slapping for a long time, It does not help that he has a style that is quite funky even when playing fingered which sounds almost like he is slapping even when he is not, the Guy Dave in my sig at the bottom has a similar bass playing style but plays no slap at all. Like a lot of people we hear what is prominent from a band/artiste and presume thats all they do, some of Flea's best lines are very melodic and gently played in fact..... 4 mins on is the best bit of the best Chili's songs IMO If your looking for Richard Bona or Janek stuff sure its nothing like but you cant say there is no groove there, you just cant!
Soul to Squeeze is simply one of the best basslines ever IMO - groove personified!
 6.
Soul to squeeze is one of their least known tracks yet one of if not their best, no slapping walking on hands or anything, just a great groove
Agree totally I've never understood the bashing of Flea, and especially the suggestion he is a one trick pony, who's only good at slap. Some of his best lines are totally slap free! Under the Bridge, Scar Tissue, Californication, Soul to Squeeze, are all really tasteful lines .
 7. The age limit seems rather arbitary. Apparently Flea is far too old for a RHCP tribute!
 8. It certainly isn't a '63 Jazz. A 63 would have clay dots, not pearl. The bridge should be spiral groves There are no holes for the ashtray covers Machine heads are the wrong shape There should be a date stamp on the neck butt end And it just doesn't look right!
 9.
I found studying and playing a piano keyboard while ear training very useful. The keyboard layout lends a different perspective.
Agree entirely with that. I learnt piano before I picked up a guitar or bass. As you say, the keyboard gives a different perspective. As scales are set out in a very linear fashion, it is much easier, IMO, to understand how intervals work. Its no accident that most top classical musicians are proficient pianists, even if piano is not their main instrument.
 10.
Isnt this what jazz players do though when they improvise?
They do - but only because they have spent years understanding scales, intervals and chords. Good improvisation relies on a good understanding of theory.
 11.
As far as I am aware all the basses in the Soundgear range have the same 'logo' on the headstock i.e SDGR, then underneath Soundgear by Ibanez. Even the SR5006E, which is just over £2000 has the same headstock.
Yep - the whole of the Soundgear range has the SDGR logo on it - even the Prestige models. In fact most of the Ibanez bass range works like that, so BTB is branded "BTB by Ibanez" and ATK is "ATK by Ibanez". And again that includes the top of the range models.
 12. The John East Stingray pre-amps are really good.
 13.
From my own experience, I would put Japanese Fenders ahead of American ones.
Japanese Fenders are certainly consistently very good. US ones are much more variable in my experience
 14.
Update to my previous threads - have come to the conclusion that I`m only going to have 2 basses, a Precision for one band, and a Stingray for the other.
+1 to that. If I'm honest, I gig with either my Stingray or '73 Precision 90% of the time.
 15. Both are excellent in my experience. If you like Precisions, you won't go far wrong with either. The choice is down to taste really - there's not going to be a lot of difference in terms of quality.
 16. I'll PM it to you now...
 17. You can email him through his website here: http://www.east-uk.com/
 18.
Prob sounds as good as any other Ric..
Ouch !
 19. Damn - only just seen this, and would have been able to make it last night! I will make a Dick Venom gig before the year is out!
 20. Very nice. good price for an all original '65 too.
 21. That's a full fat proper Stingray, not a Sub. Good price too!
 22. PM'd re the 2005 'ray
 23.
Unless your earning a fair bit, its probably not worth bothering. Probably end up owing the accountant more than the HMRC. From personal experience most accountants would just milk it, do sod all you couldnt have done yourself, and charge you dear for it.
I have to use an accountant for my "proper" job. They advised me that the amount I earn from giggng once or twice a month is so small that the Revenue would treat it as a hobby rather than a business. Mainly because if they treated it as a business, I would probably be able to show a loss and claim tax back!
 24. I get to Derby through work regularly and buy stuff from Rattle and Drum a fair bit - in fact I recently bought a rather nice used Telecaster thinline reissue there. I've always found them excellent. Personally, so far as brands is concerned, I would suggest Mark Bass. None of the East Mids shops seem to stock them.
