I think CBS bought Fender in 64 so your bass is defo post CBS.
January 1965 in fact
Nope, it's not post CBS, it is CBS.
Indeed. CBS bought Fender in 1965, so pre-CBS is anything before that. They sold Fender in the mid-eighties, so 70s Fenders are slap in the middle of the CBS period. I would have thought somewhere between £1000 and £1300 if its all original and in decent nick.
Haha yeah. Also I've never seen a P with a J bridge cover on it before.... now I know why.
Presumeably he's put that on as a Precision ashtray won't fit over the Badass. It looks hideous! -
one more!
Wow - that is stunning! Is it standard jet glow? It doesn't look like the usual solid black - more of a smokey colour.
-
That's very nice! I had the pleasure of trying one a few years back and was surprised how nicely it played
The price difference between Squiers and MIMs seems to be closing now. Why?
Arguably, because a lot of Squiers have better specs, and are at least as well made. I would take a Squier VM Jazz over a MIM Jazz any day (and yes, I have owned both!). -
1974 Fender Jazz on Ebay - not quite as it should be!
Just to confuse the issue, The Gallery currently have a mocha 74 Jazz..... 4 bolts and body end truss rod: http://www.thebassga...VintageGear.cfm
74 is right in the middle of the transition from four bolts to three bolt neck and bullet truss rod (and change of thumbrest). Either (and in fact pretty much any combination) can be correct for that period. In fact the one in that link has an old style four bolt neck, but the new position for the thumbrest. There's no definitive cut off point, and Fender mixed and matched for some years. -
Isn't it just a lefty OLP that someone has bunged a '51 pup in and had a bit of fun with some p/g material?
That's what I thought. Not sure what they were thinking though!

Looks perfectly legit to me. 74/75 is right in the transition period for logo / three bolt neck / and thumbrest changing to E string side so nothing particularly suspicious here. He's also posted lots of pics including the pots, pickups, etc which doesn't usually happen with fakes. Looks a nice mid-70s Jazz to me! -
I reckon that's a copy...
No I spotted someone showing off my Old rick or what looked like it on here once , I say mine because I had it made from the factory , it was a custom colour in very very dark midnight with black hardware as it had smoke lacquer on, not clear, I had to sell it when the local crims stole my car and work tools. Now I would sell my backside to get that Rick back
Sorry vax - can't help you on that. Sounds a pretty distinctive bass.
-
Do you have a very dark purple/ midnight blue 4003 with black hardware, if so did you buy it off e.bay a fair few years ago ?
No and No! I have an all black 4003 and a Mapleglo 330. Why - did you want to make me an offer?
-
you dont buy them as a players instrument.
I do!
-
they took all the worst bits of a 50 year old design and put it in a new instrument.
In what way? The usual criticism of the 4003 is the bridge design, the pickup covers etc. Both updated on the 4004, but as I say, they've never been that popular.
-
Yes - the bassist who toured with Paul Weller a few years back used one. They're very nice basses, but have never been as popular as the good old 4003/4001. Ironic really, as Ric always get criticised for not updating the 4003 model - in fact they have, but nobody buys them!
When you've annoyed them enough with the 6-string and they've fired you, that's when the 7 (or more) -string bass really shines: You can use it to upload videos of yourself in your bedroom two-handed tapping pieces of music that would sound much nicer on a piano.
This has to win the award for best ERB post ever
I don't thinkit's a gotoh it looks like there are two screws at the front corners. It doesn't even seem to be a 5 screw bridge.
You're right - I hadn't spotted the screws at the front.
-
The pickups look like they may be EMGs to me. And the bridge looks like a Gotoh 201. Both would be good upgrades to a MIM Jazz, but I would want some better pictures.
-
They're excellent. I've had a four and five string and regret selling both! The necks on the four strings are chunky. The five string is, I think, narrower spacing and felt similar to a five string stingray to me.
vax2002 You're posting a lot on this forum and slagging Rick prices; you have also slagged off the condition of this bass without seeing it. Please don't post on any of my threads again, fella: I'm trying to sell this bass without a troll f***ing it up.
+1. He does seem to be on a one man, anti-Rickenbacker crusade! IMO this looks a lovely bass, at a bargain price. I wish I could afford / justify another Ric
