1.
Fender strings are also now made by D'Addario - or so I believe.
Ah - that would explain why I like both!!
 2.
There's lots of flatwounds and they all have different qualities. So you're likely to get a list of people's preferences. At the moment, I use La Bella Deep Talkin 760FS on my fretted Precision for a Motown/Stax sound (FS are standard guage and high tension, for a little less tension you can try 760FL light guage). Thomastik Jazz Flats (JF344) are on my fretless precision for a slightly brighter and middier sound - these are much lower tension - and La Bella Deep Talkin 760N Black Nylons are on my Lakland Decade - these are roundwounds with a nylon tape winding on top. I'm less keen on D'Addario Chromes which are fairly tense and initially bright, nor the Roto Jazz flats for the same reason. The GHS Precision flats are I think the same as the Lakland flats which I also like. For a sixties British bass thud try Pyramid Golds.
+1 to all of that. I actually like the higher tension and brightness of Chromes - they sound great on my Precisions and the Stingray. But they're less of a traditional flats sound. I've used the Fender flats, which I really liked - quite a tradition sound, but still plenty of clarity and definition. They're pretty cheap for flats too. I've also got the rotosound nylon ones on my cheapo acoustic bass, and they sound great for a tradition upright thud.
 3.
What price is a bank transfer? Don't some banks offer it FOC if under a certain amount. Although I guess Portugal could be totally different.
Even if the bank doesn't charge for the transfer, it will charge for the change of currency. The cheapest way of doing currency exchange/transfers is likely to be through a specialist broker such as HiFX, but the saving on one-off smallish amounts is unlikely to justify setting up the account TBH.
 4.
I wonder if he realises that the case might fetch as much as the bass?
That was my first thought! The case certainly looks like a late 60s / early 70s Fender case from the limited pics available.
 5. FWIW I seem to have particular problems with Off Topic loading. Its just taken over 12 seconds for the main sub-forum page to load. Bizarrely, the other sub-forum seem to be loading a lot quicker.
 6. I'm still getting delays on pages loading - both on my Mac using Safari and on my work PC using Windows. Noticeably slower than the old site I'm afraid.
 7. That's a beaut! You can't beat black/black/maple on a Precision
 8.
just to add the site's gone back to being painfully slow for me... hope things settle down...the delays are actually putting me off using basschat at the moment
Same for me I'm afraid
 9.
What is the tax, Vat?
Customs duty and VAT. Details here - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm And IIRC its charged on the value of the goods and shiiping costs. I imported a bass from Seattle last year, and ended up paying just over 20% of the price in duties before the bass could be collected.
 10. Looks like a legit Mex Jazz to me. The routing hole/circle under the pickguard is correct, and I'm not sure anyone would go to the trouble to fake that. But its not a vintage Fender as he describes it
 11.
Apples and oranges, to be honest....
+ another 1. I've owned Warwicks and Rics and they are completely different beasts. I actually like both, but it really depends what you want, and what feels and sounds right to you.
 12.
I'll leave the old one open, but I already edited the title! Before I started this thread in fact!
So you did. I should have read that first - sorry
 13.
New thread to start collating interest for a Nottingham Bash this year. Try not to post anymore in the thread for 2010 to avoid confusion.
I've voted yes for the FIveways, although I've no strong views. Is it worth closing the 2010 thread, perhaps first editing the title to reference this one?
 14.
I think we need a function room rather than a venue, the point is to have all the gear set up so people can mingle and try stuff rather than a gig environment. From what I remember (going back several years) there's too many tables and not enough sockets/close wall space to make the Maze a good venue for a bass bash. It's a good idea though, but I think the last one was a nice enough place (apart from the chavs hanging around outside early on).
Agreed - I thought the venue last year was fine. Luke (aka Tait) and I organised it last year. As Luke has said, he won't be around this year, and I am struggling with work committments for the next couple of months. I think we need a volunteer to take on the booking of the venue, and organise a new thread for this year's event? The title of this thread is a bit confusing as it implies we've got something booked in November - I'm worried some poor sod will turn up there on 20th November and wonder why nobody else is around!
 15.
If you'd be interested in just selling / trading the neck, let me know! I've been looking for one of them.
Me too - can I have second dibbs?!
 16.
The tone is different from the BBT to Badass. It's only an "improvement" if you like it though
Agree entirely. There is a difference, but whether you like it or not is down to preference.
 17.
A few years ago this would have been seen as an absolute bargain and been snapped up..today it's only seen as a fair price and there don't seem to be any takers. Absolutely rediculous!! Wish I needed another four string... Have a bump anyway..
My thoughts exactly!
 18.
Actually you shouldn't make that assumption, you obviously don't know much about me.
I made no assumptions and admit that I know nothing at all about you! It was just a light hearted response to your comment that you wouldn't want me as your lawyer. I wasn't offended by your comment, so try not to be offended by mine...
 19.
So I'm responsible for the care of someone who is so sh1t-faced that he can't even stand up properly? That's one of the most depressing things I've ever read.
Not exactly. In essence, you owe a duty to take reasonable steps to avoid forseeable injury. If a drunk comes onto stage and falls into the drum kit (we've had that happen too!) you are unlikely to be liable. On the other hand, if someone who's had a few drinks trips over a lead you leave in the main exit of the venue, then you are likely be liable. There are, of course, a lot of shades of grey in between those examples. But the main point is that, whatever the rights and wrongs of the law, you would be daft to gig without public liability cover.
 20.
Not very well draughted - I'm glad you're not my lawyer.
You couldn't afford me
 21.
What, exactly, are the public liability issues for the band members? Isn't the venue usually covered for such things? For example, the last gig I played was for a birthday party in a pub with no payment involved - we just turned up with our (uninsured) gear and played. What was our PL position?
You could end up liable for potentially huge amounts of money. I'm an insurance lawyer by day, and I wouldn't dream of gigging without PL insurance. Some examples: - punter trips over some of your equipment while you're playing, unloading gear, or packing up after a gig - your PA speaker topples over during a gig because the stand fails and lands on someone's head (we had this happen, although in our case it fortunately missed everyone) - your amp has an electrical problem that causes a fire and burns down the venue (yes - the venue will be insured, but their insurers could sue you to recover what they pay out if you're at fault) As to the drunk point - you may be able to argue contributory negligence on the part of the drunk. But the law of negligence is largely about foreseeability, and it is foreseeable that there will be drunks leaving a venue after the gig while you're packing up (in fact its a certainty at most of the venues we play). You owe that drunk a duty of care. Contributory negligence might reduce the value of the claim but that's all it would do. FWIW MusicGuard include PL insurance if you insure your equipment with them. I can't remember the amounts, but its at least £2million from memory. And I think I pay around £150 - £200 per year for that plus £7,000 worth of equipment cover.
 22.
Only mobile phone camera, piss poor lighting & nothing else special but I love the red on black contrast of this
You can't beat a matching black headstock!
 23.
Ok here's one - and this is the thing that I would be most interested in hearing about - what if a custom build doesn't turn out exactly as you hope? Has this happened to anyone?
It shouldn't happen with a good builder as they will have spoken to you about your requirements, and kept in touch with you as the build develops. The specs on my Shuker were tweaked a bit as the build went along. More likely is that your requirements or tastes will change after you've had the bass a while - but that's GAS for you!
 24. I had a four string singlecut built for me by Jon Shuker three years ago and its a fantastic bass. I would advise speaking to a few of the custom builders and talk through your requirements with them. Jon will certainly come up with some good ideas, and his prices are pretty competitive. I would also give Jim Fleeting in Harrogate a call.
