I reckon you're probably right! I sense an opening for a tv prog entitled Top Bassgear.....all we need are 3 Basschatters. One tall and curmudgeonly, one with flowery shirts and a liking for beer, and one like a hamster. Any takers?
I can do curmudgeonly, but fat and bald might not work on the tele...

...this might be worth a punt. Presumably no bids as he can't spell bass! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Base-guitar-/3207253...=item4aacb7e960
1. It has a huge range of tones, from fat dub at the neck to in your face clank at the bridge. It is in fact the rather unanticipated solution to the question I posted here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=125993&hl= 2. It is the most comfortable bass to play I own by far. It sits perfectly and the bridge cover is in exactly the right place for me. The lack of contour makes no difference to my style of playing. 3. The build quality is equal to, if not better then, any bass I've owned. 4. I love playing it.
+1 to all of that! IMO the bridge pickup solo'd is just about the best rock tone out there. Rickenbackers are quirky, and if you want modern bridge, pickups, and body contours, then there's always the 4004 series. But for whatever reason, they simply don't have the appeal of the 4003 / 4001. Of all the basses I've owned, my all black Ric 4003 is the one that gets most comments at gigs - which can't be a bad thing
I had never tried Chromes, and in the recent months I decided to explore the world of flats a bit. I have just re-strung my Squier Classic Vibe 50s P-bass with a set of D'Addario Chromes. WOW! It sounds amazing, so punchy, so fat... Definitely my favourite flatwounds so far. So... thank you to everyone who has recommended them at one point or another!
+1. I've just put a set on my 51 reissue P and they sound great. Planning to try some on the Ric as well, as I think they'll really suit that.
was the advise about behringer based on personal experience? Behringer pedals are cheap & cheerful, but I've never had any problems with mine. Their bass limiter is my only must-use pedal.
+1. I've got aone of the Behringer EQ pedals and it does the job. They're plastic, and not as robust as a proper Boss, but they're also a fraction of the price. If you're gigging regularly its probably worth getting the Boss, otherwise the Behringer is fine IMO.

Gloss black n gold Wal Mk 1 - close to a Geddy
Oooooh that is nice! I'm developing some real GAS for Wal's at the moment. They just look really classy! Truckstop
+1. I'm not normally a fan of Wals, but that looks incredible! -
It's a good idea, but what would be a practical way of doing this? I've always been told that you shouldn't put drive effects through the amp's own FX loop, and mine doesn't have an adjustable blend control anyway. EDIT: Never mind, just found a relevant thread with a few blender suggestions. I'll do some homework! Thanks, I'll see if I can find some samples!
Quite a good demo here by Mr Lomenzo himself! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQDSDA929Sw

I've just switched from using the EBS Multidrive to the Ashdown Lomenzo Hyperdrive. Very versatile pedal, and as it only applies distortion to the mids, you retain the top end. Its a lot cheaper than most distortions, which I think paradoxically counts against it, but I would highly recommend it.
Didn;t Stuart Zender do the same to his Fender's?
Pretty sure that's who I was thinking of now you mention it. I retract the "reasonably" high profile
I guess along the lines of hoping that, if you play Fender on a big stage but cover up the logo, Fender will call you up and say "we'll pay you not to cover up our logo".
I seem to recall a reasonably high profile band a few years back (I can't remember who) covering the Fender logo because Fender had refused them an endorsement deal. Seems pretty pointless as protests go!

I use the Korg DT-10. Excellent for live tuning (with a mute option) although I'm not sure whether its true bypass.
he's a very underated player imo.
+1. his stuff for Primal Scream is good, but IMO his playing with Stone Roses is sublime. -
I took this advice, and ended up buying a second hand G4M bass for £300, plus the £80 for a setup, which was paid for by selling the giant hardcase. Took my teacher to test it with me, since he obviously knows far more than me, and he reckoned it was a decent one. I haven't really played any other 'budget' basses to compare it to, but I like it anyway. Once I can afford it, and feel I deserve it, I'll probably sell it on and find something of a higher quality, but that'll be for a while yet!
+1 to all of this. You do need to budget for a proper setup and decent strings, but then they sound pretty reasonable to me. And the hard case is excellent!
Primal Scream, Mani, Epiphone jack casady bass. Great couple of songs too.
Enjoyed the songs. Just surprised Mani wasn't using a Ric. Sounded great though . -
Well if you are into slim necks check out the Ibanez SR500.
+!. And there's one for sale on here for £200 right now (not mine!) -
Thanks for the responses guys. Looks like I could be on to a winner (eventually). Does anyone know if the necks are much the same size/shape across the range? I'm not against buying online but I'd be reluctant to do so without being confident that the neck would suit me (I find some basses almost unplayable...). Trying a cheaper one locally and then looking online for a high-end second hand bargain is very appealing!
The SR range all has very slim necks, and I'm pretty sure they are all built to pretty much the same profile. If you like skinny necks, the SR500 is, IMO, just about the best value bass you can get for under £500. But the neck is too slim for me. Other models in the Ibanez range have wider necks - particularly the ATK which has much more of a Stingray feel (and tone, come to that).

Just bought a pedal from Andy. Well packed, quick delivery - thanks again!

Rickenfaker on eBay being sold as a Rickenbacker.
Wonder if JH/RIC are going after stuff like this in the Far East?? Hold on, I actually like the loook of that....................... Faker nameplate, too!!!
Hmm - to me that's as bad as the ebay auction. Its got a Rickenbacker name plate on it and is being passed off as a genuine Ric. Or at least it is deliberately allowing people to think that's what it is. Looks stunning in the blueburst though! -
Once again I'm wondering why they pulled my John Birch Faker and not this? I described it as a UK made bass and there was no reference to the R word, mine got pulled and to cap it all I got barred from selling on Ebay temporarily, I also got a flea in my email from John Hall about how I was breaching intellectual copyright! I wasn't trying to con anybody into believing it was a Rick and if anyone's seen my JB it isn't an overt copy - I'd say 'inspired' by the Rick shape....
Very fair point. As much as I love Rics, I have no problem with faker's, so long as its clear in the description (and clearly it was in yours) and buyers know what they're getting. The Ric police should be concentrating on fakers being passed off as genuine Rickenbackers rather than your John Birch, which will be a bloody good bass in its own right! I've reported the auction as well -
