Gail Ann Dorsey
Enjoyed that! Is it the Reality tour? I saw them in Birmingham on that tour - it happened to be Gail's birthday IIRC as Bowie presented her with a cake complete with candles

So, I'm thinking of buying Ric 4003 and I need some advice.....
Agreed on all counts! To your knowledge, are neck/nut widths a function of year Simon?
No idea TBH! I've just read a lot of threads on here and various Ric forums saying that neck profiles vary a lot year from year to year. I've not played enough Rics to really comment on whether that's nut width or profile (or both). But mine certainly feels more comfortable to me than most Jazz necks which I find too narrow. -
If you like the Stingray tone and vibe, I'd say the Ibanez ATK 305. Still regret selling mine!

I absolutely love mine! The necks do differ a lot by all accounts. My 2004 is much more of Precision / Stingray feel than Jazz feel, which suits me. The big difference is that the necks don't taper the way that a Fender does so the width at the 12th fret is pretty much the same as at the nut, which can take a bit of getting used to. But best of all, the bridge pickup solo'd is just an outstanding tone which works with pretty much anything IMO. -
So at what point did the horseshoe cover stop being part of the pickup itself and was just a cover/handrest?
On the standard 4001 / 4003 models, in 1969. I think other models have had a true horseshoe since though, More details here if you scrool down to the pickups section: http://www.joeysbassnotes.com/Fakericks.htm Well worth reading that before you buy a Ric!

Good allrounder Multi FX Bass pedal wanted. Suggestions?
simon1964 replied to coffee_king's topic in Effects
The Zoom B2.1u seems pretty good from what I've seen online so far, but how is it in a live scenario? How do you turn a pedal sound off and on? From the online videos it looks like the left foot switch goes down the bank of sounds and the right foot switch goes up the bank of sounds? Thanks
If you're looking for a pedal where you can switch effects on and off, and edit them simply and quickly while playing live, the Boss ME-50 in "stomp box" mode" is your best bet IMO. You basically have three pedals which are allocated a particular effect. You can switch on and off, and edit the effect using good old fashioned knobs while playing live! You get a decent(ish) compressor and EQ section as well. The problem with the ME-50 is that its less good if you use it for switching between pre-programmed banks as there is a short, but noticeable, time delay. Personally, I only ever use the stomp box mode live, and I find it far easier to use than the Zoom or Line 6 floor pod. -
Stunning!

a spare 20 grand.. which bass shop in the world?
simon1964 replied to bubinga5's topic in General Discussion
Here: http://www.emeraldcityguitars.com/home But most of the £20k would disappear on the 1951 Precision -
When, incidentally, did they start through-body stringing?
Pretty sure they orignally had through body stringing when they were introduced in 1951, so it would be correct for a 1952 model.

My 64 Precision's neck is actually stamped "5 Nov 64" - my actual birthday! Pics in this thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...hl=64+precision "5" in the neck stamp is actually the model number rather than date, but still pretty cool!
Oh and Beedster, my thread about Stringsdirect and this are totally different. This is accusing someone of dishonesty, my thread was about a messed up order.
Unless I've missed a post I don't think anyone has been accused of dishonesty. In at least two of my posts, I've expressly said that it clearly was an honest mistake IMO.
I take the point that the shop is responsible for the identity of what it sells but if I was Mark I might be a bit pi***d off that this is being debated in public among many of his potential customers when a) he will feel like he acted in a reasonable manner, and there is clearly more to this than meets the eye……
But there are retailers criticised almost daily on here. If this was Music Ground or The Bass Cellar nobody would bat an eyelid, save to add their own negative experiences. Edit - its only fair for me to add that I have bought from Bass Direct, and was very satisfied with the service. But I don't think it can be right that a retailer should be beyond criticism just because the owner is a Basschat member.
But where does the liability stop? Did the guy who brought it in to bassdirect know? He sold it as an 83. Did whoever he bought it off sell it as an 83? Truckstop traded it abroad as an 83, there's a chain of people involved in this. Mark didn't magic this bass out of thin air, it was sold to him as an 83 too by a trusted customer. Maybe, as a retailer, he should've done more to check the total authenticity but he has been misled, intentionally or otherwise, too.
The point is that, legally, it doesn't matter whether the retailer knows. If he applies the description he is liable for any inaccuracy that description. I'm sure Mark hasn't for a second intentionally misled his customer, but as the seller he is still liable under the act for the inaccurate (albeit innocent) description.
I won't mention names, but when I pushed a certain well-known vintage retailer to take the necks off two '64 Precisions, neither was a '64 (and no, it wasn't V&R, they were actually very cooperative and accurate in this respect). . Chris
Funny you should say that, Chris. I had a similar experience with a '64 turning out to be a '65 when the seller took the neck off. They didn't happen to be based on New King's Road, did they?!
-
+1 well said Simon. My wife is a manager in a retail shop and I have been informed that there is no exact time either for you to return goods in these instances. It just says 'a reasonable time' within the act.
Yes - and what is deemed reasonable will vary according to the facts of the case, but if Alex has gone back and asked for a refund as soon as he realised something was wrong, then that's what he is entitled to. As I say, it matters not that Mark didn't know. Legally, if the seller applies a description to the goods, he is liable if that description is wrong.
-
As I said, I've tried looking at both sides of the argument. My legal view is that the buck must stop somewhere, for better or worse. Some onus must be placed on the customer to know what they are buying, if they lack sufficient knowledge then they may take instructon from the seller. And if the seller has done everything in their power to present the item sold in an accurate light, can blame be apportioned to them? Legally, it seems not. As I said, the buck most stop somewhere. OTOH, if I were in Alex's position I'd be angry and probably in quiet talks with the vendor looking for some resolution.
I've kept out of this one so far, but I disagree with you on the legal position. The Sale of Goods Act makes it clear that there is an implied term in every sale that the goods comply with their description. If the bass is described as an '83 Precision but it's not, that implied term is breached. Alex is therefore entitled to return the goods and a refund. The only exception is if he has kept the goods for long enough to have been deemed to have accepted them - in that case he is entitled to a refund of the difference in value. That's the legal basis of the trading standards post which Machines made above. It matters not that Mark thought it was an "83 Precision. If the description is inaccurate the implied term is breached (irrespective of knowledge).

+1 to all that's been said on the Behringer. It really is bordering on useless for bass.
