I want to buy a rackmounted tuner, korg's are too difficult to come by these days, or trying to buy one is too much hassle/expensive. I play drop C and read reviews that the BTR2000 doesn't reach that low, am I right?
IMO the BTR2000 isn't great. I had one for a while, and it struggled to track to E. I really doubt it will track to a low C. The Korg rackmount tuners are excellent if you can find one, as are the Fender ones (can't remember what they're called but they crop up on ebay from time to time).
this is £90 brand new, why would someone buy it for £120. its worth like £60 used.
To be fair, they're over £200 most places, eg here: http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/tuners_detai...=09032413534028 If you've seen them at £90 I suspect that's some sort of clearance deal.

That really is stunning! Fantastic job
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwlogyj7nFE I love Soul to Squeeze too, it's another superb song
+ another 1. Great bassline too. Interesting that Flea gets labelled a one trick (slap!) pony - Soul to Squeeze and Under the Bridge are both great melodic lines with no slap in sight (could add Scar Tissue, Californication and a lot of other to that as well).

I can see the sense in this, but if the limit exists for the ebay forum shouldn't it logically exist for the for sale forum as well? I'm not sure I follow the logic of having a limit for one but not the other.
They're considered "vintage" now because enough time has passed?
Exactly this! There is no logic to vintage guitar prices, other than they attract what someone is prepared to play. The worst Jazz I ever played was a mid-70s one which weighed a ton and was virtually unplayable. But it was priced (and presumabley sold) at £1,500. Now could be a good time to be buying mid-eighties basses relatively cheap, before they become collectable! TBF 70s Fenders are very variable, and there are some good ones out there, and they do look the part.

Jose - reading this thread, I'm missing it already!! Definitely gig it before changing the pre-amp. I'm a huge fan of the passive / parallel / bridge pickup combination too. Absolutely fantastic tone live, and covers pretty much everything. Just whack in the active electronics when the drummer and lead guitarist are getting over enthusiastic at the end of the night and you need to cut through!
Can I be No.2??? Really enjoyed last year
Me too - I'll be there again! -
That's very nice indeed! Are you sure the top is cocobolo? The ones I've seen have been maple or walnut. From the pics it looks a bit more like walnut to me - cocobolo tends to have a darker contrasting grain. Either way, lovely bass!

My two Precisions: Sunburst 1964 Precision. All original and currently strung with flats. An old school sound to die for. Second up, CIJ 70s reissue, fitted with an EMG and Badass. Brilliant gigging bass, and has the battle scars to show for it

I've just posted this in the Rickenbacker thread, but its black, so I'll post it here too!

Here's my old Sandberg Basic. I sold it a year or so ago but missed it straight away!

Lots of good suggestions above, but also worth thinking about the EBS Microbass II. Fantastic bit of kit, and the valve tone option thingy thickens the sound up nicely.
I have a PM4 and a 'Ray. The MM p/up is not like a Ray p/up at all tonewise, it's more like a J p/up on steroids to use a cliche. This is pretty much down to the p/up position. A Ray's p/up is more towards the neck by an extra 40mm. On top of that you've got the MM pre amp which is voiced in their way Vs the Sandberg which I find to be far more transparent.
+1 to all of that. The Sandberg sounds great, but is different to the classic Stingray tone.
I still have a Marlin Sidewinder bass. I ripped out the frets using screwdriver and pliers and filled the slots (and gouges) with polyfilla. Sounds a lot nicer than you would expect!
I had a Marlin Sidewinder strat type. It looked nice, but sounded awful!
Do we actually know this though? As I said, the Guitar Dater website will respond to any old number. Just because it dishes up information doesn't necessarily mean that it's a genuine number (after all, I'm pretty sure the Gibson with s/n 12345678 hasn't yet been made ). The only people who'll be able to confirm anything will be Gibson themselves... and only if they've kept proper records.
Yes, I take your point. But I assume the buyer is saying that this is not a serial number which Gibson would apply to one of their guitars. At least we know it is a combination of numbers which is consistent with a Gibson! I guess you can never be 100% certain a serial number is genuine, but the fact that the number is "right" for the model is some reassurance. I agree its never going to be definitive though.
-
You could make a fake Gibson, use that site to figure out what serial number you'd need to make it look a certain age, and then whack that number on the headstock. It's certainly no guarantee that the serial number itself isn't fake.
I took the original post to mean that the buyer was saying this was not a genuine Gibson serial number, which in fact it is. Whether its applied to a genuine Gibson might be another matter, but its not a fake serial number.
According to an online checker, that serial number indicates that it belongs to a guitar made at the Kalamazoo Plant on March 5th, 1985.
agreed - link here: http://www.guitardaterproject.org/gibson.aspx
Son of a Preacher Man - Tommy Cogbill/Dusty Springfield
Cracking bassline - I played it for a charity gig I was involved in a couple of years ago. Brilliant line, which is a lot harder to play (well!) than you first think.

If I had to pick five: Senses Working Overtime - XTC Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello (probably would have gone for Pump it Up, but that's already been posted!) Too Much Too Young - The Specials Hangin' Around - The Stranglers Down in the Tube Station - The Jam Not the most complicated basslines, but they all seem to suit the song perfectly

Jazz pickup position relative to bridge
simon1964 replied to Max Normal's topic in Repairs and Technical
I can't remember the actual distances, but the position actually differs on Fenders. 70s Js have the pickup closer to the bridge than other years. I have no idea why they moved the pickup in the 70s but the position closer to the bridge certainly makes the tone more "burpy" to my ears, and also makes the string tension noticeably tighter if you play over the back pickup as I tend to do. I realise that doesn't answer your question!
