I'm sure a ric was played through a marbass amp at the recent Nottm bassbash, sounded fine. .
That was my Ric through my Mark Bass Jeff Berlin combo. Sounds great to me - I set the vintage loud speaker knob thingy to twelve o'clock and everything else flat. With the Ric on the bridge pickup setting it gives a great rock tone. I'm sure it would sound even better through a massive valve stack, but my back is much happier lugging a Mark bass to gigs...
 2.
Wolstenholme loves his octaves If that's not bouncy I don't know what is.
That was going to be my choice, so I'm glad I read the thread before posting! We do this in my covers band - great excuse to get the Big Muff out...
 3.
great. up there with a badass, a fraction of the price
+1.
 4. That looks great - if only I could get on with Jazz necks!
 5.
I hear them referred to as "monorail" bridges. While they have advantages in being able to customize the string number and spacing the myths that they eliminate crosstalk and isolate one string from another can easily be debunked by a basic understanding of physics and advertising. If they did isolate one string from another they would also isolate the strings from the wood to achieve this amazing fix to a problem that never existed. They're all bolted to the same block of wood, there is no isolation beyond the faux appearance of isolation. So IMO buy them if you like them but don't expect any real world tone advantages.
That's what I was trying to say(but I've always been hopeless at physics) The monorails on my Shuker work fine to be fair. And are way better than the infamous BBOT. Badass is a good choice too, but for a Jazz shaped bass the Gotoh 201 is a great choice. They have the traditional Fender look but with more mass than a standard Fender bridge (and do give more punch and sustain).
 6.
I'm getting a custom bass and I'm wondering what type of bridge to put on it. Its a shuker jazz classic and at the moment its having a gotoh bridge fitted What are the advantages (if any) of having bridge made of seperate individual pieces fitted?
I've got individual bridge pieces on my Shuker. I think the idea is that they allow the string to vibrate without any connection to the saddles for the other strings, supposedly giving a more defined sound. To be honest, while they look cool, I doubt they make any real difference to the sound.
 7. I've bought and sold loads of stuff on here and, so far, I've only had good experiences. But I do rely on the feedback threads, and wouldn't buy anything expensive from someone who didn't have a positive feedback thread. I also don't buy from members who only post in the sale forum. Back to the OP's point, I'm actually fairly relaxed about people selling stuff on at a profit. I can only think of one bass which I've sold on for more than I paid (and that was because I'd added a £200 pre-amp to it!), but IMO once I've sold a bass, its up to the new owner what they sell it on for. I've just sold a Jazz on here which I put up for sale at what I regarded as a low price. I did that because I wanted a quick sale to raise funds quickly for another purchase. Priced low, it sold within a day or two. I could probably have got 10% higher if I'd been prepared to wait, but it was my choice to price it competitvely. If the new buyer decides he wants to move it on, but is prepared to wait for a higher price, or for the market to improve, why shouldn't he?
 8.
Black Rick is great, really aggressive looking. Not really played Ricks, so daft question I'm sure, but what's all the chrome gubbins around the bridge pickup?
Chrome gubbins just about sums it up! There's not much point in looking for a reason behind a lot of Rickenbacker's design quirks
 9. Here's my black Ric And my old black Corvette $$ (which I should never have sold!)
 10.
Strange, because in my experience the P isn't dull, doesn't fart and cuts through much more effectively than a J.
+1. JJ Burnell's tone could hardly be described as dull and farty!
 11.
Sold! I'm buying it when I get paid next tuesday. I'm going for blueburst with maple. Yum Yum! Truckstop
Excellent choice!
 12.
Cut only? That's interesting. I don't remember that being covered in my dream... So there's really not much difference between a USA and a Tribute? Truckstop
The cut only doesn't take that much getting used to, and works surpsingly well. They're active (obviously), and cutting treble actually sounds to my ears pretty much like you're boosting bass, but without the volume jump you get when you boost most active EQs. In any event, I tend to find myself using the various switches for most tonal variations. Once you've worked out which switch does what, its a very effective set up. As neepheid says, the pickups are the same as the US model, so soundwise I doubt there's any difference. And the finish is flawless on mine, and the woodgrain much nicer than on my natural finish Stingray. I suspect the price difference is principally down to comparative labout costs uin the US and Indonesia.
 13. I've just bought one on here. I've only had it a couple of weeks, but its fantastic! Huge tone, very effective and versatile EQ, and very comfortable to play. I really can't see why anyone would spend 2 or 3 times as much on one of the US models.
 14.
Do you say that because you know Dad makes parts for Morgans? I think the updated Morgan is doing ok though.
LOL - no, I was just using Morgan as an example of a company that produces a fantastic, cool, desirable product which is rooted in what many would say was an old fashioned design. Just like Rickenbacker IMO!
 15.
Not being able to make enough is a design flaw. Choosing not to make enough is marketing.
Agree with that too. Rightly or wrongly Rickenbacker have made a consious decision not to have cheaper versions of their basses mass produced in the Far East. They're pretty much in a minority of one in doing that amongst major producers - Fender, Gibson, Warwick, G&L, ESP, PRS, Musicman etc all have cheap Far Eastern brands. I'm not knocking those - I own some of them! But Ric's decision to limit production must surely be a consious marketing decision to keep the perceived exclusivity of the product (rather than a design flaw!). I suspect they could produce thousands of cheaper "Ric Lites" in the Far East if they chose to do so. Presumeably they don't because they want to keep the exclusivity (and margain) on their US stuff. But as I said several posts ago, I'm not defending Rics as a design. I love them, but I readily accept the bridge, pickups, and lack of countours are as old fashioned and flawed as a Morgan Roadster.
 16.
Marketing isn't good design. In fact, they are often directly at odds with each other.
I agree. I was just responding to someone's suggestion that not making enough was a design flaw
 17.
Not being able to make enough to keep up with demand is another design flaw I didn't think of.
Even if you end up being able to sell them at a massive premium?!
 18.
Do they have a waiting list just for special orders though? There are plenty hanging around in a lot of shops I have been into.
I think any new Rics in stock are likely to have been ordered by the retailer 6 - 12 months ago. Obviously, you can find shops with them in stock, although they're as rare as hens teeth in the East Midlands! I'm not defending Rics as a good design. The bridge adjustment is hopeless, and the bridge pickup cover simply gets in the way. My point was that when Ric put a decent bridge on the 4004 and did away with the bridge pickup cover it was actually less popular!
 19.
They forgot to take out the 'massively overpriced' quirk,
Quirk or not, they have a waiting list, so they must be doing something right!
 20.
Rickenbackers. So many improvements can be made and they have stubbornly stuck to a design that has never known an engineer. I think that is where Fender has it, Leo was an engineer and not a musician.
Thing is with Rickenbacker that they have updated their designs to take out the quirks (eg the 4004 bass which has a modern bridge, pickups etc) but then nobody buys them!
 21. I'm afraid not going to be able to make this now. Gutted, as I was really looking forward to it! I'll make sure the pedal gets down there for the raffle. Have a good one - will definitely get there next year!
 22.
I don't
+1. I love the look of a Jazz, and love the tone of the bridge pickup solo'd. But I can't get on with the neck profile at all. The neck feels far too cramped for me. I've owned four Jazzes, and sold them all! And a Precision may sound a bit bland played on its own, but sitting in the mix, its hard to beat live.
 23. Great afternoon, and some brilliant gear. Here's a few photos: Flat Eric's twin neck monster BigRedX's Yammy thing
 24. Just sold my Jazz to Kurca. Very easy deal, and a great chap to deal with. Enjoy the bass! Simon
 25.
I have another big question..what could be its commercial value?
I don't pretend to be an expert, but if it were me I would be looking for £225 to £300. Probably nearer the lower end of that bracket in the current market. Edit - in fact there's one on ebay now (albeit with jazz pickups rather than humbuckers) with a BIN of £250.
